Jacob is far from an imposing figure. He's five foot six and very slender, with facial features that have a delicate quality about them. His large hazel eyes are framed by noticeably long eyelashes, the hard line of his jaw is offset by the length of his hair, and his mouth has an appealing plumpness to it. Under the right circumstances, he has an androgynous look about him. He's heavily and visibly tattooed with symbols and art inspired by his Pakistani roots. Scars from Quidditch are dispersed over his form. He often sports stylish ensembles in vibrant colors. He's left handed.History:
-61| Jacob's father, Lucian, travels to Pakistan to act as assistant to a well-renowned potions master. The potion master's daughter - Jamila - catches his eye and it isn't long before they're courting. They marry in the summer of '61 and she gets pregnant soon afterward.Personality:
-64| Jacob is born in Pakistan in March of 1862. His birth turns into a family affair and celebrations kick off immediately after he is safely delivered. He spends the first two years of his life doted on and spoiled by his family. Being the first born son grants him the privilege of being treated like a little prince.
Lucian returns to France with his wife and child in tow. His family isn't thrilled with who he's chosen as his wife. His decision had been easier to accept when he was in another country, but being faced with it brings out some ugliness he hadn't been expecting. Despite the fact that his wife comes from a pureblood family just as prominent as his own, she is still very much Not White and that is enough for the other Babineauxs to justify alienating her.
Lucian has a public falling out with his family and severs ties with them. He is cut off from the family wealth, but has enough of his own money that he and his family can live comfortably. They move to England to get out from under the long shadow cast by the Babineauxs.
Lucian opens his own potions shop. Business comes in at a slow trickle at first, but through his skill and existing connections, his profile as a potions maker rises astronomically. Later in the year, Jamila finds herself pregnant again.
Jamila and Lucian's second child is stillborn and Jamila passes away due to complications following the birth. Lucian is devastated and, though Jacob is at the age where he can't fully understand what's happened right away, he still knows that something is wrong. He cries for his mother day and night. Unable to cope with both his and his son's emotional turmoil, Lucian places the burden of Jacob's care on a nanny and retreats into his work.
-70| After spending two years in mourning, Lucian tentatively begins searching for a new wife. He is introduced to Marielle Wick by a mutual friend and is quickly charmed by her. They enjoy a relatively short period of courtship before marrying in 1870. This union is well received by everyone but Jacob who sees remarriage as a betrayal of his late mother's memory. He is cold with his stepmother and combative with his father.
Jacob finally displays his first signs of magic when he makes a vase explode during an argument with his father. Marielle announces a pregnancy and gives birth to twins late in the year. Jacob is decidedly not thrilled about being burdened with the responsibility of younger siblings.
-74| Jacob's Hogwarts send off is overshadowed by the birth of his half-brother Emmett. He is more than happy to leave his family behind in September. After some debate, the Sorting Hat places him in Slytherin. He takes an interest in Quidditch right away and joins the Flying Club. He does well in his first set of courses, but already knows that his passion doesn't lie in academia.
-77| Nothing remarkable happens at Hogwarts aside from the broken arm that keps him from trying out for a spot on the Slytherin Quidditch team in fifth year. At home, his relationship with his father and stepmother gets steadily worse. Jacob feels like an outsider and that his father is trying to replace him with his new children. Jacob stops going home for the winter holidays and only reluctantly returns there for the summers. Puberty makes him that much more sullen, moody, and disagreeable. He also began questioning aspects of his sexuality which made him uncomfortable in his own skin.
-79| Jacob fills the open seeker position on the Slytherin team. His slight frame and fast reflexes make him a worthwhile addition. He develops a notable passion for the game and becomes unhealthily dedicated to his team.
-80| Jacob is named team captain and finally decides that he wants to play Quidditch professionally after he leaves school. His father is disappointed by this decision and tries to steer him towards a career in potions making, something he considers more valuable than sports.
-83| After a major falling out with his father, Jacob reaches out to his mother's side of the family in Pakistan. He stayed in relatively close contact with them over the years and they are sympathetic to his problems. His grandfather invites him to stay for a while to let things settle down and Jacob accepts the offer. While in Pakistan, he tries out for a minor league Quidditch team and serves as their seeker until he returns to England three years later.
Jacob returns to England in June after receiving a letter from his father informing him that Wendela has died as a result of The Laughing Plague. A potent mix of sadness and guilt propels Jacob to attempt repairing his relationship with his family. He starts playing for Puddlemere United as a second string seeker in the fall.
This is the first year of Messiness™ for Jacob. He develops a fondness for alcohol which doesn't lead to the smartest decision making in terms of his public conduct. Luckily, his friends keep him from seriously embarrassing himself. He carries on a number of short lived affairs, mostly with people he meets through playing for Puddlemere. Most of his lovers are married women, with the rest being a mix spinsters and men of various relationship statuses. He and his partners are the picture of discretion in public, but behind closed doors drama reigns supreme. Few of his relationships end well.
Messiness™ continues when one of Jacob's unwed lovers tells him that she's pregnant with his child. Jacob ... does not take it well. She angles for a marriage, but he isn't at all amenable to the suggestion of such a commitment. He gives her as much coin as he thinks is necessary to pay for the services of an abortionist and attempts to wash his hands of the whole situation. They fall out of contact for months and, eventually, Jacob replaces his memories of her with other warm bodies. He thinks the issue's been settled until early November when he receives a letter from The Woman informing him that she couldn't bring herself to go through with the abortion. He has a daughter. She doesn't overtly threaten him with blackmail, but the implication is there, right between the lines, and Jacob is clever enough to pick up on it. He promises provide for both mother and child in exchange for continued silence. Afterwards, he gets blackout drunk and wakes up on the floor of his bedroom feeling sorry for himself. His pity party lasts for the remainder of the month. Puddlemere's first string seeker leaves in December and Jacob replaces him.
After turning twenty five, Jacob starts going through an early mid-life crisis and acts out accordingly. He meets his daughter for the first time via a clandestine meeting in Quidditch's off-season. Any lingering doubts he has about her paternity are put to rest when he lays eyes on her; she's the spitting image of him at that age. It's a bit of yikes moment for him. He spends the next month or so drinking heavily between practices and trying not to have a nervous breakdown. He pulls himself together when the season starts and uses Quidditch as a distraction from the whole child he's managed to father. In November, during a game against the Harpies, Jacob is struck by a rogue bludger. He wakes up in the hospital with a splitting headache, massive holes in his memory, and a woman who claims to be the love of his life at his bedside. Thanks to the memory loss and her overwhelming charm, Jacob believes her. Things snowball and, despite Jacob's serious and documented aversion to commitment, they end up engaged. The engagement lasts until just after Christmas when, due to his family's intervention (his stepmother, specifically), the woman is revealed to be a half-veela taking advantage of his vulnerability. The relationship is hastily ended and Jacob is left feeling so embarrassed he could actually die. He doesn't, fortunately.
Jacob resolves to start cleaning up his act because, Merlin, he's going to be twenty six in a handful of months and that's a bit too old to continue carrying on as he has been. Puddlemere wins the Pro Quidditch Cup on the 30th of January and Jacob couldn't be more pleased with himself. He takes it as a sign that this year will be better than the last few.
