Valerian,

I hear that congratulations are in order. Do you have a thing for your cousins? Just wondering.

Arthur,

You'd like to know, wouldn't you?

Valerian,

Well I already have some evidence, as you may recall.

Arthur,

And your first reaction to hearing that I was marrying Tatiana Lestrange was to compare yourself to her. I think that says more about you than me.

Valerian,

Don't be rude. My first reaction was to congratulate you.

Arthur,

I would rather you compare yourself to her. It's more fun that way.

Valerian,

Oh, well, if you like it:

I won't claim to know any of our younger cousins well, but from what I've heard Miss Lestrange is much smarter than I am. She is also a testament to our collective good-breeding in a way that no one has ever accused me of, and is by all accounts a polite and charming young woman.

In addition to our obvious differences (my being a man, for one, and my general tendencies towards recklessness gambling etc.) I suspect that I am more irritating but also more charming, and I suspect I have more experience in several specific areas than your bride-to-be does.

I hope this comparison is pleasing to you.

Arthur,

I would most assuredly not make you my wife; but conversely, I would not make Tatiana my lover. I hope this answers up your initial question.

Valerian,

Very clarifying, thank you.

I had an additional actual question. Has anyone dabbled in potions for the diseases of the mind (alcoholics, laudanum users, et cetera) and to what level of success?

Arthur,

I should have known you needed a favor. You never do write me for the sake of it anymore.

But to answer your question: yes, I do. You must know that any potion brewed to alter the brain comes with potential side effects that must be monitored. I am also skilled in the art of legilimency—something many are uncomfortable with, but that may assist in the process of ridding the mind of any maladies.

And, as you know, I don't do anything for free.

Valerian,

Oh, don't worry, darling, this exchange was more for fun than for a favor. I also never said this potion was for me, but you appear to have ferreted me out nonetheless. What if I was just academically curious?

In the interest of this favor: what sort of side effects? I am not sure exchanging one problem for another would do anyone any good.

As you know, I fairly famously don't have money.

Arthur,

Forgive me for my assumptions. I saw the word laudanum and my mind immediately went to you. Good memories only, though, I promise.

Different potions have different effects, and it would dramatically vary depending on how potent you desired to potion to be. Perhaps we should arrange a date to meet—it would be easier to show you in person than explain through letter.

I don't need money, but I do enjoy surprises.

Valerian
