If it hadn't been for the Minister himself taking part Charles would have flatly refused. It was literally the last kind of dueling tournament he'd ever want to moderate. The ladies weren't even compelled to use decorative spells, the whole thing was a platform for female on female violence which was abhorrent in the extreme! Also he'd much rather have taken a place in the audience to watch Miss Lestrange take part which would likely be an even mixture of both pleasure and torment for him. Miss Lestrange's participation in dueling tournaments was possibly the closest he had to a criticism of her and even that he somewhat forgave because her conduct otherwise was so immaculate.
Hopefully he'd get to see her duel.
For now, however, he was stuck with two women of minor consequence and had no real investment in the duel at all. If he was pushed to bias he supposed Miss Baker was the more familiar of the two but he had no respect for female lawyers so it wasn't saying much. He more or less raced through all the introductory points and the niceties. "Please begin when you're ready, Miss Baker."

Being able to duel properly filled Gertrude's soul with joy. Not any decorative rubbish, not charm your dress into a different colour, or conjure a Christmas tree. No, actual duelling.
She had her wand gripped in her hand, her eyes firmly planted on Miss Backus. When it came to dueling, Gertrude was very competitive. She had taken every opportunity over the last several years to enter into competitions, and hone her craft. She was ready.
After all the normal pleasantries, curtseying, etc., Gertrude was ready to go. With a wave of her wand, she attempted to gather the air into a gust of wind which would pick Miss Backus up into the air, and then drop her (more or less) gently onto the floor.

Charms were more her forté than anything else, so when called upon to take the defensive position it was clear that a defensive charm would be the order of the day. A typical shield charm was the best option straight off the bat.
Maddie cast.

It was quite a cut and dry result - Miss Backus' shield failed and she was briefly wafted into the air and dropped back down again. Thankfully nothing too rough. "The first round goes to Miss Baker! Miss Backus will begin the next."

Maddie couldn't help but laugh at the misfortune of her loss. She supposed that served her right for not practicing as much as she would have liked to to keep her skills sharp.
Now on her turn to attack she decided a charm to turn Miss Baker upside down seemed a fitting turn about to her initial attack

Gertrude was very pleased to have won the first round. However, she knew she could not become smug nor celebrate too quickly. Miss Backus could easily turn the tables back on her.
As was perhaps the obvious choice during her defensive round, Gertrude attempted to cast a shield charm.

Miss Backus' spell never hit its mark, Miss Baker's shield charm promptly saw it off.
Well that made his job easy. Thank Merlin. "The duel goes to Miss Baker!"
