Egeria Rivers
#1
In-Character
Full Name: Egeria Adelaide Rivers
Nicknames: Ada
Birthdate:  February 15, 1870
Current Age: 20
Occupation: Lady's Companion and Debutante.
Reputation: 9 - She and her paternal family are quite reclusive.
Residence: Currently Sanditon, but longterm residence is in Hogsmeade.
Hogwarts House: Former Gryffindor
Wand: Cedar, 11 inches, Griffin Feather.
Blood Status: The Short Answer - Pureblood. The long answer is that while publicly the Rivers family pretend at being pure their line is dotted with muggleborns and halfbloods whose backgrounds have been erased and replaced with something more socially acceptable to the purist community. The most recent participant in this practice was Ada's great-grandmother who was a muggleborn so by all but the most staunch purists she would be considered pureblood if this fact were to be made public.

Social Class: Upper Middle Class
Family:
  • Faith Rivers (1801) - Lover of Magical Creatures, Breeds Cats. She and Arianrhod rarely see eye to eye.
  • Quincy Rivers (1788) - Longlived (too long lived by Arianrhod's reckoning), and eccentric he is the wizard who prefers his robes and will openly complain about pants. He specialises in food-magics and his experiments ensured that Ada's early life was anything but boring.
  • John Rivers Snr (1820) - An easy going man who is happy with his lot in life and just plods along. His lack of ambition is frustrating for Arianrhod.
  • "Elizabeth" Arianrhod Epona Rivers (1825) - The self-styled matriarch of the family. She probably would've much liked her inlaws to have died in any of the disasters of the last decade and it frustrates her to no end that they just continue to exist. She is a highly educated, intelligent and formidable woman whose passions for herbology and arithamancy have lead to her authoring several books. Unhappy with governesses she took over Ada's education and rearing from a young age.
  • Alice (1851-1873) - Ada's mother. She came from a well-to-do pureblood family and eloped with John Rivers Jnr, her school sweetheart. Publicly it is thought she died from TB however her own family and the River's used this as coverup of the fact she had run off with a Vampire.
  • "Diana" - Her mothers sister. She has taken over the role of guardian and "mentor" of Ada as she's grown older. A member of the Upper Class, she employs Ada as her Lady's Companion and acts as her chaperone. A widow (or spinster?) she lives a leisurely life and is currently staying at the Sandition with Ada.
  • John Rivers Jnr (1851-1879) - Ada's father, he eloped with childhood sweetheart Alice and was later transfigured into a piano by his lovers former paramore.

Appearance: She has always been a very tiny girl, and indeed she was only 4feet upon entering school and while growing a whole foot in school is still tiny at five feet upon graduation. She is ambidextrous and is stronger in her left side however her right is more suited towards delicate activities. She has a pale complexion, an oval face and large expressive hazel eyes. She bites her lips when anxious and has an overbite. Her handwriting reflects her size and is quite tiny and proper though she has a tendency towards running writing where she rarely lifts the quill when writing. She tries to correct this however it is the bane of whomever she writes with if shes trying to write quickly. Her auburn hair is easily pliable and in it's natural state has a wave to it. It is easily tamed into a variety of hairstyles. As she grew up amongst elderly relatives she does not have the most current fashion sense though luckily her stint as a Rose and living with her Aunt Diana prevents her from making any vast mistakes, or as many as her very modest stipend allows-  however prefers to wear paler pastel colours and simple clothing.

History:
PREHOGWARTS
Ada's story begins with the decline of her family many many years before she was born. An upperclass family a series of poor money making decisions left them forced into losing a lot of their legacy. All that remains is their ancestral house and part of the surrounding area though nothing compared to what was once owned. Their money now comes from the Apples in their orchards and the production of cider (though this is not enough to make them that wealthy) and the remaining land allows them to be self sufficient. The house itself has been in disrepair since Ada has been alive and a great much of it is closed off and sealed - much like her family which prides itself on its secrets and twisting the truth. Their rather rural position and income is insufficient for the upper-class and to live that life would involve debt or sale. The would be considered the poor relations of the wizarding world.

Her parents met and fell in love in school and eloped shortly after graduation, as Alice disagreed with the marriage alliance that her purist upper class family intended for her. The result of her rash decision Ada was born on the 15th of February, 1870, just over a year later and was a hard birth. She was an incredibly small infant and her family never expected her to survive infancy, but she did.

Her parents however soon fell out of love and when she was three her mother ran off with a vampire. The incident was hushed up and both the Rivers and her Mothers family perpetuated the story that her mother died of TB. Her father was not particularly a good father figure either and being too young to have a dependent child he let his mother take over the raising of Ada.

Ada's childhood was a rather lonely affair as no governess was tolerated by Ada's overbearing prideful grandmother for long and eventually the strict woman took over her education herself. Her ability to use magic came as a matter of course and her first use of it was as a small child.

Her father began courting again shortly after Ada's eighth birthday and had the misfortune of becoming part of a love triangle with a witch and Dark Wizard who chose to get rid of his rival by transfiguring him into a piano and leaving behind several cursed objects, including a horxcrux in the form of a necklace.

HOGWARTS
Ada received her acceptance letter to Hogwarts in 1881 and received a kitten as reward and companion. While shopping she first met friend Cecily and their friendship endured being separated into different houses and Ada's dissolution of her grandmother's purist ideals and prejudices. While at school Ada focused on her academics as she was intent non fixing her father who despite the hospital and ministries best attempts remained transfigured and cursed. She takes to wearing the necklace, found in her family home, though she does not connect it to her fathers predicament or the Dark Wizard.

POST HOGWARTS
She graduated in 1887, and her Aunt Diana took over her education and future. She was became a Pendergast Rose along with Cecily Gallivan and later debuted. Her aunt took her in as her Lady's companion though Ada's interest clearly lie elsewhere. And she has been for some time wrestling with her own future as she is unsure whether she should marry and secure her family's continued future and if that's the case should she marry to benefit or marry somebody capable. Her continued goal has always been to restore her father to his former form and to which purpose she has thought about joining the ministry or become a healer to gain further knowledge however she is at a crossroads and has yet to decide as she is prevented by her perceived obligation to her grandparents as their heir and the heir to the estate and business and the personal concern that she is not suited for the roles because of her nature.

Personality: Egeria grew up under the strict guidance of her grandmother who fully believed in the age old adage that children should be seen and not heard. She is a rather introverted but is also an obstinate perfectionist, who can be pure-hearted, and intelligent and has a tendency of dealing with her problems by withdrawing somewhere to cry though she has steadily grown more confrontational as she matured. She dislikes attention, is very stubborn and can be very judgmental of others though she is willing to amend her opinions given evidence of the contrary. She dislikes sicknesses, crowds and people who needlessly chatter. She is very loyal to her friends and is not somebody who likes being crossed, nor does she take kindly to others who hurt her friends.

Other:
Boggart: Her Boggart is a dark cloaked figure. His appearance draws on her childhood memories of a vampire and the dark wizard. He always looks sickly as he grins and reaches for her.
Amortentia: Apples, Green Wood, Cinnamon and Vanilla.
