Appearance: Standing at a fairly lofty 5'7 Fenella has unremarkable dark hair, hazel eyes and a distinct birthmark on her left temple, a combination that has led her to be called handsome more often than attractive. She dresses almost entirely in black as both a homage to her former life and so as to keep the necessity of washing down - stains are far harder to detect on dark material after all - and has the look of a woman unaccustomed to sunshine. Which is pretty accurate.
History1856: Born to the lower middle class Goshawk family Fenella is the first of many who will contribute to the family’s waning fortunes and declining reputation, however at the point of her birth things are relatively stable. Her father is a newspaper reporter and though his writing skill is just a shade above terrible he is given enough column space by an editor he is blackmailing over an affair to keep the family in good stead. Her mother, clinging onto gentility, gives music lessons to children of more affluent households and considers her dealings with them as a great victory for their family. The Goshawks are a fairly harmonious bunch though the warmth of the household is transitory meaning Fenny and her siblings grow up mostly self-sufficient.
1868: After failing to show magic right up to the age of eleven Fenny's family are fairly sure she's a squib. Fenny is shaken by their obvious disapproval and the change in attitude when she does finally make herself hover off the ground doesn't quite make up for the disappointment in their eyes. She is sent off to Hogwarts feeling extremely gauche and never feels entirely at home, even after being placed in Ravenclaw amongst other introverts.
1868-1875: The best thing to be said for her schooling is that it passes quickly and without too much incident. She is no one's best friend but neither is she a victim of anyone's ire, instead successfully managing to be invisible for seven years, displaying aptitude in Herbology and Potions. Against her father's wishes she begins to work as an intern for a Potioneer, rejecting a much more respectable and affluent position as an intern at the Hospital for the simple reason that she doesn't especially like people and doesn't really want to heal them. Experimental potions are were her heart truly lies and for several years she trains, lives with her mentor's family as a lodger and learns.
1883: She becomes a fully fledged Potioneer in her own right, making a living by supplying the hospital and local healers, and spending every penny on bizarre and interesting ingredients with which she and her mentor, with whom she still resides, attempt to create new concoctions with. They have some minor success with novelty potions but a true breakthrough is out of their reach. Still they enjoy themselves and almost become closer, until the family decide to emigrate to Canada, leaving Fenny behind. Her mentor is the last to leave the country and though Fenny waves them off with tears in her eyes they never arrive in Canada.
1883-1884: The family, convinced Fenny has done something to either keep her mentor in England, or else killed them, begins to make accusations and Fenny is forced to return to her family home, begging her father for help. This he does, paying some shadier friends of his to shut the family up, but before Fenny can get back on her feet he insists on her being married to keep her out of trouble. Naturally she objects but faced with threats she is forced to acquiesce.
1884: In the cold April of 1884 she is married off to ____, a man she had met all of twice and was chosen by her father due to his money and willingness to part with it. The marriage lasts a single night. Her husband's stance on consummation is not negotiable and despite her body making every effort to throw up barricades he forces the issue and she runs away the following day.
1884-1885: A harrowing few months follow in which Fenny is occasionally homeless, sometimes able to find filthy accommodation in a boarding house and, if she's lucky, finds enough knuts to ride the Knight Bus as far as it will take her. Eventually, which trying to keep warm in a pub, she overhears a prostitute bemoaning her newfound pregnancy and an idea strikes her. She manages to talk the woman into giving her the money for the right ingredients and concocts a potion to abort the baby. Her reputation as the quiet, fastidiously clean destitute woman takes a knock but she becomes known as someone who can help out when needed. It's enough to keep her off the streets at least.
1885-1887: Slowly she begins to expand the potions she sells and it becomes known locally as her "menu". She makes enough of a living to rent some only slightly shitty rooms in Knockturn Alley and she feels relatively safe for the first time in an age because literally no one in Knockturn Alley can break through the protections spells she casts. During this period she becomes acquainted with a group of degenerates, artists and prostitutes and she quickly learns that she can rinse them for pretty much anything as they're all far too high to notice what she's giving them. Excellent.
1887-1890: Despite herself she does become fond of the lot of them and though she supplies them with laudanum so questionable it might somehow render their ancestors infertile she cares about them. Fenny keeps herself removed from them for the most part - not wanting to get too close and lose everything again - but the combination of abortions, mind-altering drugs and selling people cures for ailments she sometimes makes up on the spot has left her with a little bit of a cash to fall back on if her life ever implodes again. For now she'll continue making potions, avoiding anybody from her past and trying to piece together what actually happened to her much loved mentor.
