It was absurd really but the word bedroom sent a thrill of pleasure and panic through her the likes of which she had not experienced until this moment. They would be no more alone in that room, no less focussed on each other and yet the thought of being in the same room as a bed and a man was enough to make her heart beat painfully in her chest.

There was also the fact that after this there would be no going back, if indeed she had not already crossed that particular Rubicon already. The vague and mysterious something that would come next would mean that she could no longer claim to be a proper young lady, not the same as her sisters or cousins – though now she was here herself she thought she might be understanding Ellory more than ever before – but she thirsted for whatever it was more than she has ever wanted anything. His lips against her jaw made her whole body tingle, she wanted more of it.

“Yes, I think so,” she replied, shy but rather more decisive than she had expected to sound. She was decided. She was. She might love Freddie Prewett. “I want you to show me,” she added, letting the meaning of her words teeter between two possibilities.

"Alright," he said, the warm little butterflies spreading to his chest.

He hadn't a single clue how to do this. He really thought he ought to, spending so much time around Fitzroy and all his rakish friends growing up, but seduction was not a skill that came naturally to him—nor was it one that he thought could be taught with ease. Seduction seemed to require not only a healthy self-esteem (something he did have, fortunately) but also the innate assumption that everyone wanted him, which didn't come as easily. Even as he led her to the bedroom, Freddie found himself second-guessing—not once, not twice, but thrice—whether Gretchen wanted what he wanted and whether she would pull him closer or push him away once he made his intentions obvious.

But it didn't happen—and thank Merlin for it. Whereas the trek to the bedroom seemed to last an hour, the time it took for them to fall into bed felt like seconds. From the moment his lips touched hers all of his worries seemed to fall away. It was awkward, but it was fun; he hadn't expected the giggles and the bumped noses, the difficulties of taking her dress off (why did young ladies wear so many layers!?), nor how quickly it would end. But by the time it did, Freddie laid back on his pillow and listened to the rhythm of their breaths, a smile on his face.

Merlin, he was in love with Gretchen Lestrange.
