Not forever. Well, that was something, he supposed, but it was a very small something. He wanted to ask how long, then? but he knew he couldn't just come right out and ask that. He didn't want to seem like he was pressuring her, or like he was angry at her. He was disappointed, but less in the idea that they might not be sleeping together on their wedding night and more in what she'd said a moment ago. A wedding night was just a night; they'd have plenty of others. If she wasn't up for it tonight, that was fine. He didn't mind, really. Honestly. But her word choice a few seconds ago — risking getting pregnant — was indicative of perhaps a larger divide here than just wanting to put it off a night or two. Wasn't getting pregnant sort of the whole point behind getting married? He'd invited her into his family, and she must have known that he didn't want his family to just be the three of them forever. She'd come from a big family, and he had too. He'd always assumed they were on the same page about this, so — why the trepidation, then? Didn't she want children?

He swallowed and pushed that thought aside. "Right," he agreed, with a nod. They could talk about this later, he supposed, because he didn't want to spoil their wedding day with an awkward confrontation — particularly not if it was an unnecessary one. Perhaps it had just been a slip of the tongue and she did only mean she wanted to wait until tomorrow, or a few days from now, or even a few weeks out. He could handle that. A few weeks wasn't much, considering that he'd just pledged to love and cherish her till death did they part. "Just for the time being," he echoed. This was fine. They could do this. He could do this.

Gertrude smiled, relieved. This conversation had gone well. While obviously they couldn't wait forever, it felt good to know that Walt was happy to wait for now. All her worries melted away. She felt so silly for having been so awkward about it all earlier.

She once again closed the gap between them and grasped his hands in hers. "I love you so much." she told him sweetly, smiling up at him.

He was a little out of time and space, at the moment. He was still trying to wrestle with this new development, to make it make sense in his mind and to figure out what it would mean for the future. She'd closed the distance and taken his hands before he'd really had a chance to realize what she was doing, but he clasped her hands in his in turn, almost mechanically.

"Right," he said, with a smile that was sincere but a little distant. "I love you, too."

He could do this. Right. No problem at all. Not a problem at all.
