Appearance: 5’9” but burly and broad-shouldered, Myles has a solid physical presence but nevertheless is average enough in most respects that he is usually easily overlooked. With a strong, square jaw, blond hair and blue eyes, he is altogether a man’s man, never coming across as especially foppish or fashionable. He still bears a smattering of pockmarked scars from a bad case of dragon pox when he was a child, and although he pretends to be entirely indifferent to all things appearance, deep down bears some resentment about it.
History:
1859 | Myles is born in the midsummer heat, fourth child and third son to Marcus and Victoria of the respectable upper class. For the first year and a half of his life, he is watched over constantly by nurses; he seems too weak for the world.
1863 | Having spent the first few years of his life as his mother’s darling, new brother Sebastian takes his place as the baby of the family and Myles feels this loss keenly.
1866 | Possibly more keenly than when, only a few years later, his mother dies from a miscarriage. Her death is a kind of betrayal, since she always paid more attention to him than his tiresome father; it also convinces him of the weaknesses of the fairer sex.
1868 | Unfortunately ill health stalks him through childhood, interrupting his studies and impeding his ability to join in with the rivalries and roughhousing between brothers. For a few months he has a persistent case of dragon pox, and feels utterly helpless and utterly ignored.
1869 | He recovers, but he has the pockmarks to show for it, and a lot of catching up to do. His first sign of magic comes late; his older brothers have been teasing him about being a squib for years already.
1870 | But his time at Hogwarts comes, and the hat places him in Slytherin. Here he begins to find his feet, taking bits and pieces from his brothers’ characters and the people he meets to construct the person he hopes will most likely make him well-liked and eventually successful. Making friends now will be a solid foundation for later aims.
1872 | In third year, he adds Muggle Studies and Ancient Studies.
1873 | Fourth year sees a growth spurt and a chance at a heartier frame, and perhaps that helps Myles make the house team as Keeper - which, privately, he does more for the sake of impressing people and innate competitiveness than caring about the sport.
1874 | He doesn’t make Prefect in his fifth year, and although Myles has never said anything to suggest he wanted the position, insecurity makes him take account of every failure as a defeat and a personal slight against him.
1875 | Although he has a good analytical mind and a talent for making mental connections and strategising, his OWL results are good, but not outstanding - possibly because in classes he tries not to make it look like he cares too much. For NEWTs, he keeps on Charms, DADA, Potions, Transfiguration, History of Magic and Muggle Studies.
1877 | Myles has never been in any doubt that he will need a career to sustain him, since his eldest brother is due the lion’s share of the family inheritance and as the third son - and not his father’s favourite, either - there is absolutely nothing he can do about it. He goes into the Ministry with high hopes of scaling the ranks and one day being a respected gentleman of society on his own merits; by 35 he might be head of a department, with a Wizengamot seat and the Minister’s ear.
1878 | After a year of interning he becomes a full-fledged member of the Department of Magical Accidents & Catastrophes. Perhaps not the easiest route to a Wizengamot seat, but he doesn’t have the linguistic talent for an international career, and everyone tells him he’s much too honest to be a lawyer. And one of his brothers is already an Auror, so he steers clear there; but Myles nevertheless has dreams of waltzing in to save the nation from the next magical disaster and earning eternal fame and glory for his efforts.
1885 | He doesn’t think much of women generally - they are not to be trusted, be they wives or whores - but he is aware that if he wants a fortune, he will have to make a sacrifice for it, and so he begins to cast around for a suitable wife in upper-class society.
1887 | Ten years in the department and he still hasn’t made assistant head, let alone head of a department. Meanwhile, people of his age and status - and often lower! - are rising in the ranks, surpassing him. And it is not as though he has been a bad employee: in fact, he is so reliable as a subordinate, and so good at ingratiating himself with colleagues and superiors - and especially his future father-in-law - that they must just overlook his ambitions and take him for granted where he is.
1888 | Things will change. For the moment, his efforts have been diligently focused on “Angelica”, the eldest Wyndham daughter; the man has only daughters and a bastard son. Myles has been playing the long game with her, and makes an effort, while they are courting, to listen to her opinions, to share some of his ambitions, to woo her properly. By the end of this year they are married.
1889 | Already good friends with Willard Pryce - they were at Hogwarts at about the same time, and are both Ministry men now - Myles now has further rationale for staying close to him. Will is the bastard son standing in the way of his inheritance, and that needs dealing with sooner rather than later.
Personality: To most people, Myles is a good guy. A bit typically blokeish, maybe, but blithe, affable and polite. He puts his head down and works well, gets to know people, emanates an aura of rational wisdom and assured good sense. People gravitate to him instinctively for a solid second opinion, for shrewd advice and confidential reassurance. He’s trustworthy, dependable, honest. Myles has always encouraged this: it has made him a practised hand at recognising people’s individual insecurities (insecurity being a mindset he knows well). Only when you know him exceptionally well will the cracks start to appear to this illusion of a man: signs of his ambitions, fears of impotence, and seething jealousies, as well as a coarse, cruel, caustic side. Even his own wife is only just beginning to see glimpses of the real him. To everyone but her, the general approach is... talk less, smile more, don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for ;)
Other:
— Consistently unable to cast a patronus.
— Has an interest and some basic aptitude in Occlumency and Legilimency.
— Warning: may not always show it, but is a VE-typical misogynist, racist, etc.
