Elijah Smith worked at a muggle newspaper and wrote a book about interrelations between wizards and witches and muggles. It might not have been a bestseller but definitely got Elijah started writing books on Muggle studies. One or two may be in the Hogwarts curriculum. Mary worked in the Department of International Magical Cooperation at the ministry.
Appearance: 5’8”, athletic, muscular. He has brown eyes and dark brown hair. He usually wears suits and bow ties. He usually looks quite good and everything is just right. He makes sure his shirts aren't buttoned incorrectly, and everything looks excellent before he goes out. He likes wearing loafers and other shoes that do not have laces. His wand hand is his right.
History:
1858 May 6. Born. Named Gelasius Octavius to Elijah and Mary Smith. Gelasius is the name of two popes and the names of actor martyrs. Octavius is the name of Julius Caesar’s adopted son who was later known as Augustus Caesar.
1864 First incident of magic. A vase he hit with a ball stopped from falling onto the floor and hovered for a little while a few inches above the floor before setting down on it.
1869 Received his Hogwarts letter.
1869-1870 Attended Hogwarts. 1st year
Gelasius really liked flying on his broomstick. He enjoyed it so much, he was really happy to be able to play quidditch. Herbology and Potions are his favorite classes.
1870-1871 2nd year
Made it onto the Hufflepuff quidditch team as a chaser.
1871-1872 3rd year
Gelasius was fascinated by Arithmancy and Runes when he learned about them. He decided to learn which was the more accurate method to forecast the future between them. For a period of about three months, he kept a record of what the forecast was for the next day according to Arithmancy and Runes, and detailed how his day went.
Analyzing the results during that three month period, he decided that the Runes were more accurate. He therefore only studied Runes and has used them to forecast the future ever since. He has never been sorry.
1872-1873 4th year
Enjoyed Care of Magical Creatures. But when one of the magical creatures got sick and he wasn’t able to keep it from dying, he decided he never wanted to take the class again. He decided he just wasn’t cut out for it. He started wondering about death and what happened to people and things when they died. He got called into the headmaster’s office. The headmaster said that the portraits complained that he asked them what happened when they died, something they didn’t know the answer to because they were in paintings. Gelasius argued they had to know what it was like to die because they were dead.
1873-1874 5th year
His grades dropped because he was more interested in learning about the various religious explanations about death. He wasn’t convinced by any of them. But he made sure he received O levels in every class but one on his OWLs, where he received an E. He also quit the Hufflepuff quidditch team.
1874-1875 6th year. His classes got better because he met a boy he fell for who helped him with his studies and his research into death. His name was Donald Schlack and he was a 6th year Hufflepuff. Gelasius’ owl, Hamm, short for Hammurabi, died and Gelasius took it very hard. Donald tried to console him, but felt he couldn’t very well.
1875-1876 7th year. He received O levels in every class on his NEWTs, but two, where he received an E. He graduated from Hogwarts at eighteen.
1876. Summer. Gelasius was allowed to travel around Europe and even go to the U.S. for a couple of weeks.
August. Gelasius' mother talks him into applying to the ministry. He succeeds in getting a job but it's not the job he was hoping for. He worked in the Ludicrous Patents office until shortly after his nineteenth birthday. He loathed this job and quit shortly after his nineteenth birthday.
1878. May 6. Gelasius told his father that his nineteenth birthday would be an extremely lucky day for him. With this in mind, his father decided to do something very special for him. Gelasius’ nineteenth birthday coincided with Mr. Smith’s poker game and he brought Gelasius to it. He naturally gave Gelasius some playing money and allowed him to play the way he wanted. Gelasius ended up winning the Three Broomsticks with a hand of three jacks.
May 7. Gelasius’ father wasn’t very happy when Gelasius didn’t claim ownership of the pub right away. In fact, Gelasius asked the former owner to stay on to for a year training him on all things to do with the business and to give the owner a chance to figure out what he would do in the future. Gelasius suggested he be called a partner in the business and his plan was to announce to the staff that he bought the owner out after a year. He hoped to keep all the staff at their jobs, as long as they seemed they would accept the offer.
1879. May 7. Gelasius planned on becoming the sole owner of the Three Broomsticks, he knew everything about the business and unfortunately more employees than he had expected decided not to stay on. Gelasius was a very fair employer, possibly fairer than its former owner. But he was also very young, perhaps too young? He hired as much new staff as he needed. He was at the pub everyday.
1880. Gelasius started putting 35% of the profits into the stock market and putting the remaining 65% back into the business.
1884. Gelasius overheard a lot of customers talk about muggleborn children were being kicked out of their houses because they were being possessed by the devil or they were being haunted, or because of both. He wanted to help these children. He trusted the manager of the Three Broomsticks and the other employees. At the end of 1883 and with the help of someone from the Broomsticks who he trusted implicitly, he founded the Gelasius Home for Special Children in London. He started devoting more of his attention to his children’s home than the pub.
1885. Gelasius learned the building that houses the home is haunted by a teenaged male ghost, who died in a robbery. He made the ghost part of the home’s security, expecting full reports of whatever occurred from him when he wasn’t there. His stock portfolio allowed him to run the home on its dividends.
He spent his time equally between the Broomsticks and the Home, usually ended up back at the pub after his day to drink himself into a stupor, drowned his sorrows and/or anger, so he could start the next day anew. He also heard about what happened at the pub while he was away and dealt with any problems he heard about.
Personality: Caring, Curious, Fair, Gambler, Trusting, Nice, Obsessed, Service driven, Thorough. Won’t stop until he knows everything there is to know about a subject.
