Appearance: Standing at 5’11 Orlando is tall and lean. He is strong, though he doesn’t look it, and possesses remarkably bony elbows that he always keeps covered with his shirt. Always. He had blonde hair, a slightly darker shade than his siblings, and blue eyes; he wears glasses to read but they complement his sharp cheekbones exceptionally well. All in all, he is a handsome, understated man both in his given appearance, and in the simple, classic clothing he dresses himself in.
History:
1855: Orlando is the first born of Osiris and Ariel Lovegood, a pureblood, upper class couple. His birth is greeted with celebration – a boy first time! Anything beyond that is a bonus in their eyes. Orlando has a happy, carefree childhood, surrounded by toys and nannies and wants for nothing although he is a very quiet child, something his nannies often try to change in him, to no avail.
1860: Adelia is born and Orlando absolutely adores her, even if she is no fun to play with for a while. Still she is the first thing he really loves in the world and he vows with all the strength of his five year old heart to look after her.
1862: Orlando displays magic for the first time when he sees a wasp going near to Adelia and promptly squashes it with a book.
1865: Olive is born and the same surge of protectiveness that overcame him with Adelia hits him again.
1866: In September Orlando attends Hogwarts for the first time and is almost immediately sorted into Hufflepuff. He is a happy, amiable boy who makes friends and gets on well enough. He is intelligent and studious, but possesses little ambition beyond his social sphere. He knows what his duties will be one day and it mentally preparing himself for them by getting in plenty of practice at being mostly lazy.
1867: Andren is born and from afar Orlando swears his protection on this long wished for little brother.
1866-1873: Over the years Orlando has a tremendous time at Hogwarts and acquits himself well during his NEWTs.
1873-75: After graduation Orlando undertakes a Grand Tour of the continent to expand his horizons and whilst away discovers many things about himself. Foremost is the rather startling fact that he does not care for the physical company of women. He finds them charming enough but soon realises he will never have an entirely happy marriage.
1876: Upon his return, and for the sake of having something to do with his ample time, Orlando begins to catalogue his father’s library, finding books more soothing than most people.
1879: Both of his parents die and at the tender age of twenty-four Orlando becomes the head of the family. Shit.
1880-81: Thinking that now he has more responsibility he ought to ensure some stability for the family name he decides to get married, a notion that is not without its problems. Several women are suggested to him by mutual friends until eventually he comes across Louisa Crabbe, a widow who was once a Longbottom. She is sweet and kind and he gets along with her tremendously well, even if she holds no carnal appeal for him.
Before they marry Orlando speaks to her privately about the situation, not wishing to deceive her unfairly, and after some awkward euphemisms pass his lips Louisa eventually understands what he is trying to tell her. He promises her a good, stable life and swears that he does care for her – both of which he knows he can honour – and Louisa accepts his terms.
1883: Olive is disowned [to be added]
1884: In February he and Louisa have a little girl, Adele, who is the apple of Orlando’s eye. The house burns down over the summer, which is deeply annoying, though Orlando manages to save the majority of his books and his family and really, what else matters? He purchases a new home in Wellingtonshire, large enough for all of them to comfortably live in now that Andren is back from school.
1885: In March Louisa dies giving birth to Auberon, Orlando’s son, and though he was never in love with her in the way he often thought she deserved, he mourns her deeply. Above all else she accepted him without judgement and made his life blissfully easy to live. He will miss her all his days and keep her in his heart forever, no matter who else might find their way there.
1887: After a brief and surprising courtship Adelia becomes engaged to Balthazar Urquart, the Minister for Magic. To say Orlando is startled would be something of an understatement, but nothing could have prepared him for Ada leaving the man at the altar. Quite sure he will never see his sister married now Orlando quietly accepts that she will be his companion for the rest of their lives: for himself, he is quite content with this, but he is sure she wants more from her life.
Personality: Patient and kind-hearted Orlando is quite the push-over for his family and he knows it. Being aware of his sexuality, though he has never acted upon the instinct, has lead him towards a deep privacy of himself and he is fearful that somehow he will give himself away; worse than that though is the loneliness he has inflicted upon himself, which he tries to accept but bitterly hates. With Louisa it was lessened but even his attempt to do the proper thing was taken away from him and now Orlando is extremely cautious of his heart. More content with his books than with others, largely because they cannot hurt him and offer him an escape, Orlando is a mild gentleman with a moderate temperament that often makes people think him weak, when instead he simply prefers to be the peacemaker and not rock the boat.
Other:
+ Orlando is gay.
+ If you mention a book to him, he's probably read it.
+ Nothing matters more than his family.
Age: 28.
