History
Youth Lamentia is born to the newly rich but not yet quite socially notable Addams' in the winter of 1849. A pretty child with particularly pretty eyes she is a quiet, happy baby in a perfectly normal wizarding family that grows in size through the years. At seven she displays magic for the first time and later, having spent an unremarkable childhood in middle class comfort she attends Hogwarts in 1861 and is sorted into Hufflepuff. Life at school is pleasant enough, but Lamentia's studies are often neglected in favour of her daydreaming and so it is, with her schoolwork yielding next to no promise, that her father instead arranges her a marriage after her fifth year. Surprisingly, she did receive nine OWLs but by the time they arrived she was already married to Orwell Evermore.
Early Marriage By 1867 the Evermore's finances are a little less than robust but happily this is quickly remedied by Orwell, newly minted head of the family, marrying a girl with pots of money. To begin with their marriage is amiable enough, though strained and awkward at times, and any notion of romanticism Lamentia might have about a husband nearly ten years her senior are soon put to bed when she realises quite why she was chosen and what that means for her in society. Her contemporaries are awfully snobbish, particularly _____, who makes it her mission in life to keep Lamentia from the top table, and to begin with it is a hopeless struggle.
And then, like a miracle from on high, she gives birth to a daughter who changes everything. Suddenly, and despite her own tender years, Lamentia understands that it isn't for herself that she must conquer society, but for her. Orwell is similarly besotted by his first child and "Cordelia" marks the moment Lamentia begins to think of their marriage as being a successful one. Two more daughters follow, society begins to yield in small increments and Lamentia is, for the most part, content with her life.
Later Marriage Unfortunately in 1887 the happy bubble is slightly pierced when "Cordelia" debuts and is an unmitigated disaster. Like a Pompeii level disaster. Orwell thinks money will solve the problem - of course he does, she thinks with a roll of her eyes - but Lamentia knows better. Cordelia has to marry well or else the other two never will. Society will still look down on them and her whole life will have been for nothing. (Not to be dramatic or anything.) "Portia" doesn't fare much better when her turn comes and Lamentia spends most of her nights pacing the house, full of anxious insomnia and gin.
Widowhood In September 1891, after another unsuccessful season for her girls, Lamentia's world changes dramatically when she is widowed following the tragedy at the Sanditon resort and - to add insult to injury - everything is entailed away to a third cousin she has never even met. The thought of a stranger pocketing Orwell's estate and her money is tempered only by the fact that he does not make an appearance...
Until in June of 1892 when he does.
