Basil raised an eyebrow expectantly as Nee prefaced his response; it would seem he’d stumbled upon a story. False grin fading to real grin, Basil felt himself already shifting as Nee’s mood changed dramatically. Nodding along and humming where appropriate, Basil watched Nee’s cigarette wearily. It was flying around, with ash dropping, to the point where Basil was almost distracted from the idea of his friend in an empty room, wand in mouth, trousers in hand. Almost. He snorted a laugh at the image and then again when he explained what transpired.

“Dear Merlin, and you let me go on and on about by brother with that under you hat?” He laughed. “Please tell me it wasn’t poor Rachel who barged in on your ruining a debutant!” Basil teased his friend, giving Eldritch no out whatsoever in defense of what should have been an easily defensible accident. “I’m ashamed of you,” he said feigning moroseness. “You might have had the decency to at least lock the door before having your way!”

Morgan chuckled at Basil's comment about locking the door behind him. He didn't bother to defend himself against the allegations of ruining young women, because he didn't think there was even the slightest chance that Basil was serious; if he had suspected that his friend had actually gotten the wrong idea, he would have been quick to correct him. "The door took care of that all by itself, actually. You know it sticks, lately?" Lately being progressively over the past several years, but whatever. He also wasn't sure if Basil actually did know about the door sticking, because there wasn't much cause to show guests into the room that had once been used as a classroom for their tutors, but explaining it more was immaterial to the story. "Anyway, once she'd gotten in she couldn't get out, and that's where Annie found the pair of us."

He considered for a second, then continued, "You know, Rachel might have been the better sister in this case. She might have been more scandalized, but I think she'd be easier to bribe. And anyway, she's off to Hogwarts again in less than a week. Not much opportunity to accidentally let anything slip to our mother."

Basil couldn’t help the snicker that had settled across his face. He took another puff of his cigarette and listened with all the aplomb Nee’s story demanded. As the other continued, he couldn’t help but tease even more.

“Ah so you did attempt to lock the door, Rhiannon just foiled your efforts!” He laughed again. “By George, Eldritch - you are a scoundrel aren’t you?” Basil made a suggestive sort of expression at his friend, not quite an eyebrow wiggle but along those lines. He knew how difficult that awkwardness must have been with Nee’s sister, but it was better than an outright feud. Nee had a point on him there and Basil had far less sympathy than he ought.

“Poor little Rachel,” he continued, shaking his head. “I should be glad it wasn’t her if I were you,” he chuckled. “She seems to have plenty of her own ideas apparently, you don’t need to be giving her more.” Basil rolled his eyes in reference to the comment Nee had made earlier. The only ‘good authority’ Nee had on the ongoings at Hogwarts were his youngest sibling and piecing it together, Basil was slightly affronted. He couldn’t imagine Rachel seeing him in that light and he desperately hoped she did not.

“Anyway,” he continued, amused. “You’re a better man for it. More worldly, at the very least.”

Nee didn't like the insinuation that his baby sister had ideas of any sort, but decided not to pull on that particular thread. If she was getting into trouble at Hogwarts, he didn't want to know about it. Knowing would just give him one more thing to pointedly not bring up to Mama, because whether or not he approved of whatever she was doing he knew that he didn't want to be in the middle of any family feuds on the subject.

Instead, he rolled his eyes at Basil's comment about being more worldly. "I would tell you I don't even know her name," he added cheekily, "But I suppose that would just lead to you making fun of me more?"

Snickering into his cigarette like a child, Basil gave his best friend the most amused look. “Yes, quite.” he replied, still laughing. It was amusing to Basil, in part because of the alcohol, and in part because he knew Nee to be particularly straight-laced. The Slytherin, despite the virtues of his former house, did his best to be a respectable sort. Basil couldn’t honestly imagine him extolling the vices, much less purposefully managing to get himself alone with a debutante sans pants.

Clearing his throat, Basil hummed nonchalantly. “At least you’re putting yourself on the market,” he teased again. “At risk of sounding like your mother, I’m sure the family is thrilled there’s at least someone looking about you. Even if she’s quite unconventional in her tactics.” Basil’s eye twinkled with mischief as he purposely misconstrued the situation. It wasn’t painful, per say, for him to discuss potential prospects with Nee, but it certainly wasn’t his favorite topic to think on. Basil knew one day his best friend would find a wife and marry, but he didn’t have to like the idea - and by George - he did not. For no particular reason, of course.

Nee rolled his eyes in an exaggerated fashion, making sure the gesture was obvious to Basil despite the dim light of the garden, so that he knew precisely what he thought about the idea. Fortunately for him, his mother didn't have chances to needle him about it too often lately. There were likelier candidates, particularly now that Annie was considered eligible once more and Desi still hadn't married. If his older brother was unwed, Morgan saw no reason whatsoever that he ought to be in a hurry to find himself a wife. Particularly since Desi had certain things well in hand that Morgan didn't — a house, a staff, a job where he managed people instead of being managed. Things a man ought to have before he acquired a wife and tried to start a family, in Nee's opinion.

"I'll think about marriage after Des does," he retorted. "No matter what tactics are being employed, and by whom."

“Rightly so.”

With a final amused snort, Basil let the topic drop. He hated thinking about society prospects, for himself or Nee. He missed the days when it was just the two of them roaming the halls of Hogwarts as students with no such expectations of social obligations. Everything had been easier then and he’d seen more of his friend. (Or friends, plural, he supposed; not that Basil had many more then than he did now). As was usual with alcohol, the mood suddenly swung again and Basil felt himself wistfully pout into his cigarette.

“I do miss this,” he admitted out loud. “It’s so strange still, how so very different our lives are than they used to be.” Despite my life feeling rather the same in so many other ways, he thought to himself. Basil tossed a crooked smile in his best friend’s direction and took another puff. He missed Nee so much sometimes, it was heartbreaking. Hogwarts was fine and dandy most days, but sometimes... he sighed a little to himself. "Perhaps we ought to head in though?" he offered, gently (unwillingly). He'd stolen quite enough of his friend's time and - though Basil could spend positively all evening out here until they were laying in the grass and staring up at the sky - he figured sooner or later Nee would be missed.

"But some things never change," he pointed out. Morgan cracked a slight smile and reached out to nudge the other man's foot with the toe of his shoe. True, many things were completely different now than they had been two, five, or ten years ago. Their careers were different. The expectations placed on them by everyone around them were different. The tasks that filled up their days were different. Their social circles had changed, at least to some extent — they'd broadened to include most of society, but in doing that they'd shed some of their schoolmates whose social backgrounds didn't quite align. And yet here they both were, still seeking out each other's company in the middle of a party, telling stories and cracking jokes the same way they'd been doing since thirteen. A lot might change in the next two, five, or ten years, but Morgan had no reason to suspect this ever would.

"Let's," he agreed, putting his cigarette out in a nearby tray. "You're probably ready for another drink, by now."

Grinning wryly, Basil nodded and ducked his head. He would always need and appreciate Nee more than the other probably even knew. More than he cared to admit, and in ways he didn’t even dare to imagine anymore. But at the end of the day they were both just Basil and Nee. Best friends, and determined to make their own ways in the world. Puffing his own cigarette and following suit to put it out, he threw a rather drunk arm around his friend’s shoulders. (They were broad and comfortable and he twinged, wistfully.)

“You bloody know I am…” he grumbled.
