    The Raven
    #1
    • The large, black bird cocked its head to one side and then another as it perched on the oak tree, ensuring that there was nary a soul on the streets outside of the Ministry of Magic. The rain helped in that regard, sending anyone that did not have business on the High Streetùparticularly so late at nightùto their beds, away from the grasp of the damp. Satisfied, the creature leapt from the branch on which it sat, wings flapping gracefully as it moved to a windowsill. That the windowsill even existed was foolish on the part of whoever had constructed the building: holding cells, after all, were meant to be secure, but this one afforded its prisoners a barred window. True, the iron bars were too close together to allow a human to escape, but a raven, well, that was another story.

Peeking through the window, the bird let out a loud quark, alerting the three men that laid within to his presence. One of them let out an expression of surprise at the sight of him, and that was all the encouragement that he needed. He leapt, almost viciously, through the bars and into the cell, his body morphing into that of a man before his feet even touched the ground. Lucius Lestrange looked each man sharply in the eye as he drew his wand, and the cell filled itself with an eerie green glow before any of the prisoners could find their wits enough to speak.

When it dimmed, three bodies lay on the ground, and Lucius had not even had to speak a word, let alone the two that the feat generally required.

One did not incur the wrath of the Lestrange family.

He returned home to Wellingtonshire before dawn, creeping in through his dressing room window so as not to disturb any of the household staff as they rose early from their slumbers. When he was æwoken' for breakfast, it was as if he had never left the house; Lucius dressed as usual before descending the stairs to the dining room, where breakfast awaited. All in all, he decided, a solid night's work, though the wizard could not help but begrudge circumstances for preventing him from torturing the mudbloods first. For anyone to kidnap a young girl of birth was sinful; for one so impure to deign to reach as high as Ellory, a Pendergast by name but with the Lestrange blood well through her veins, that was beyond the realm of reason.

So he had dealt with it.

Before long, he found himself joined by family; he had little doubt that many would choose to breakfast in bed, as he tended to be the earliest riser in the house, but nonetheless Lucius was not surprised when another entered the dining room.

OOC | This is open to any resident of the Lestrange house (so...Andria, Tib, Claude if he lives there still/decided to swing by, Valeria, Cash, Cornelia if she gets picked up, and Seneca), with no post order.
unless you're related to him, work under him, or are a mudblood, lucius is actually very friendly. your character might find him intimidating, but would not consider him a giant dick, esp. if they are also a UCPB.

    • Valeria had a hard time sleeping in recent weeks. It was hard for her to manage dealing with the siblings that she felt hated her and it was even harder to know about Tiberius. It irked her, but the rough sleep that she was forced to at least attempt was painful and filled with nightmares. Nightmares had plagued her mind since the Coming Out Ball after Tiberius had admitted his adoration for her. The admittance of feelings made her feel strange and undeniably betrayed. When she had woken up from another night of rough sleep, Valeria noticed that it was very early in the day, much earlier than she normally rose to start her day. But, with a shrug and a heavy sigh, Valeria got out of bed and began getting ready.

Being a woman was certainly no easy task and Valeria loathed every moment of it. The constant tying and tightening of corset strings and the constant checking to make sure one's hair was properly in place was a grueling task on its own. She gnawed on the inside of her cheeks as a servant laced her corset tighter than Valeria liked it. The lady had told her that it had been too long since they adjusted how tight her corset was. Valeria inwardly rolled her eyes at the comment, but dealt with it anyway. As soon as the last string was tightened, Valeria gasped for air. It was a lot tighter than she wanted, but whatever made her prettier.

Valeria wore a simple day dress of plain colors that did not make her stand out too much from the crowd. One could tell that the gown was designed for daywear and it was simple in its stitching patterns. Valeria had no intent of leaving the Lestrange manor anyway. Breakfast was to be a family ordeal and then Valeria would have the rest of the day to study. Valeria was going to study Transfiguration û Animagus Transfiguration in particular. It had caused her to want to succeed in a class she dropped. It was a stupid mistake for she was always good at it. But Valeria did not want to learn about how to turn a turtle into a tea kettle any longer.

The seventeen year old girl rolled her eyes in the reflection as the servant did her hair. It was so boring to just sit there. Valeria hated the way the servant did her hair most days anyway. Regardless, the deed was soon done and another servant came to her room to notify her that breakfast was indeed finished and that she should report down soon. Theseus Greengrass was her betrothed and she had more recently found out. Apparently her father and the Greengrass had decided this way back in January and forgot to tell her. Lovely. The girl stood up and left her bedroom, finally sick of being pampered and dressed and having her hair done up. It was breakfast. She was done with it.

As she descended the stairs, Valeria hoped to not run into Tib any time soon. She did not want to talk to him about how she was now betrothed to someone she did not want to be betrothed to. It irked her, most certainly, to oblige by her parents' will. For her to be forced to marry Theseus Greengrass would surely result in Valeria being an unhappy bride. She only wanted to marry Tib. She only wanted Tiberius. Tiberius was her only love. Soon enough, Valeria entered the dining room and saw her father. "Good morning, Father," she said politely to him, slowly moving out of the way to make sure the entry to the dining room was not blocked by her bustle and figure. Valeria hoped that no one made a comment about betrothals during the breakfast. It would only make matters worse.

    Cash Lestrange
And I'm racking my brain for a new improved way

To let you know you're more to me than what I know how to say

You're OK with the way this is going to be

This is going to be the best thing we've ever seen

The relief Cash felt over Ellory's return was huge; she was, after all, quite possibly his favorite relative. And people had kidnapped her, he hoped they were ripped into pieces. Not only had they stolen an underage girl, but they had cut off her finger and broken her wand. Who even did that?

At least she was okay. He didn't know what he'd do if they had killed her. It was lucky that Ellory's disappearance had been a good distraction, though. Cassius was hardly ever thinking of the nightmares anymore, although they were still... bored permanently into his skull. He still blamed Tiberius for that, even though he had no evidence and a part of him was certain that it was just his head messing with him.

The OWL results were stuck to his wall by a nail. While not extraordinary, he liked to scream about his passing Transfiguration a lot more than he should have. A list of the classes he wanted to take next year was scribbled on the bottom, rather obnoxiously. His cat had spent the past couple of days trying to swat it down, much to his vexation. Cash thought the house elves were almost cheering for her.

He woke up, got dressed, and looked around for Aelius. She was sitting under the bed and ran out to sink her claws into the leg of his trousers. Cash swore under his breath and plucked her up, slinging the demon-kitty over his shoulder. She was purring now. He supposed that was a bad sign, all things considered.

As always, Cash took the stairs two at a time. The cat sank her claws into the back of his vest. He ignored her and opened the door with his free hand, detaching her carefully and tossing her outside. Cash had long since learned that Aelius mellowed if she was allowed to wander around the Lestrange property before inevitably finding her way back into his room.

Now that the creature was dealt with, he headed towards the dining room. Valeria and Lucius were already there; Cassius carefully cultivated some calmness. After the nightmares, his father made him a bit more uncomfortable than usual. "Father, Valeria," he greeted, walking in and sat in his usual spot. Ideally breakfast would go without incident, but he knew there were no guarantees.

While Claude tried to avoid his father's house at all costs, he actually had something to speak with his father about and this time and knowing his father was an early riser, chose the morning to stop in for a visit. Claude was hoping none of his siblings or cousin would be up yet and he could speak with his father in private about possibly, in the near future, asking to court Effie. The betrothal had just ended, much to Claude's relief and he was looking forward to getting away from it as quickly as possible. He held no ill will for Gemma or her family, but it really was better that the two of them didn't get married. It had taken him a while to muster up the courage to speak with his father about his discontent over the whole ordeal, citing personality differences that would not make for a good match. Things had luckily fallen through and he had told Effie as much at the Minister's wedding, much to her delight, which only made him happy as well.

He walked to his parent's home in the hazy morning air. It was going to be hot today, he could just tell, but that would be no matter when he was content down in the depths of the Ministry with his work. Depending on how this little meeting went, would determine his mood for the day. Claude knew he would have to wait to publicly and officially ask to court Effie, but he could be patient as long as her parents did not decide to betroth her in the meantime. Then everything would be back to square one. Just a a month, that was all he was hoping for. That would be socially acceptable, no? It would raise whispered questions for sure, but nobody would ever dare to say something to them. There were a few benefits of being a Lestrange at least.

Upon entering the house, he automatically turned toward the dining room, knowing his father should be having breakfast at this time. Much to his chagrin, it seemed Cash and Valeria were also up this morning. He halted, wondering if he should just turn around and head out without bothering to stay, but that would be rude and it certainly wouldn't earn him any brownie points in his father's eyes. Claude could use all the sway he could get if he was going to get what he wanted. Sitting down to breakfast with his family every now and then couldn't hurt.

"Good morning all, thought I'd join you today." Claude hadn't lived with his parents since his internship had ended, over a year ago and he had his own modest house in Wellingtonshire, closer to Bartonburg that he enjoyed immensely. He had learned though, that while his family appreciated if he owled ahead to let them know he was coming, they didn't turn him away if he didn't. Taking his seat, which was always his, whether he lived there or not, he relaxed into the wood, wondering why two of his siblings were up so early. "Early for you two, no?" He questioned, eyebrow raised.

Ordinarily, Andria would take her breakfast much later in the morning and quite often without leaving the luxurious comfort of her bed. It was a luxury she consistently took for granted while thoroughly enjoying as much as her dispassionate personality could allow for. It was a pleasant affair really; not having to rise at the crack of dawn, eating fancy fresh handmade pastries in the comfort and coziness of her bed... Yes, it was the height of luxury.

However, today was different. It had all began a good half hour earlier when Andria was still asleep and breakfast was nearing the final stages of preparation. At the same time, an exceedingly fat wood pigeon was paying for it's tardiness as it had by no means been the early bird. As it was, this particular pigeon was a stereotypical 'bird brain' and all in all, failed as a pigeon in the year or so it had been alive, the only way t had survived, was chiefly on leftover human food thanks to the kindness of one eccentric resident of Hogsmeade who made it their duty to plump up the pigeon population. Well it had worked for this particular specimen who was well on it's way to looking like a feathery, pigeon-colored quaffle. If this was the lifetime aspiration of the pigeon, sadly, it would never be achieved for that particular morning, Mr. Obese Wood-Pigeon wasn't looking where he was flying and with an almighty 'THWACK', flew into one of the windows of Andria's bedroom and promptly died.

This loud noise rudely drew Mrs. Lestrange from her slumber earlier than usual, nearly giving her a heart attack in the process. The entire mundane life of the now deceased Mr. Obese Wood-Pigeon, however, was likely far more interesting than the flowery dullness of what had filled Andria's dreamworld in the moments leading up to her awakening. Seizing the bell-pull above her bed that would summon a servant, she sat frozen still in her bed as she waited for the servant to arrive, at which she immediately began harassing with nonsense. "There is someone at my window! Quick! Stop them!" Pulling the sheets up to her chin, she watched as the poor maid ran to the window Andria had gestured at frantically, only to find nothing there but a large, pigeon shaped smudge that hadn't been there the morning before.

The mystery was quickly solved and amidst the confusion, she was told that Claudius had come to visit. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to see her eldest son - not that she did anything particularly motherly except for asking vague questions and muttering nonsense that no one particularly cared to listen to that she considered to be interesting - and also not in the mood to return to sleep, she dressed quickly in suitable breakfasting attire and swiftly made to join the slowly growing breakfast party.

Smiling vacantly at the room as she walked in, she murmured a soft good morning greeting and took her seat at the table. "It's nice to see you here, Claudius," she remarked flatly before retreated into her usual silence. Her usual silence that she seemed perfectly content to occupy at any and all times.

    • Seneca was never an especially early riser. She liked the warmth of her bed during the morning hours and she preferred to lay down in bed until it was too late for her to just lazily spend her time pretending she was sleeping. The youngest Lestrange ended up waking up early, though, because while she was trying to sleep she was sure that she heard someone walking around the house. Although she knew that she was safe inside her bedroom, she couldn't sleep because she was sure that if she dared to close her eyes someone would attack and hurt her.

It seemed that she wasn't the only one to wake up early, though. Even her mother was awake and Seneca was sure that her mother was never an early riser. Only Cornelia and Tiberius seemed to be asleep but Cornelia was also not an early riser and Tiberius... Well, maybe he had something to do right now.

"Claude!" Seneca said happily when she saw her brother but then tried to become serious. Her parents were in the room, she had to be mature!

Nearly flinching visible as his mother called him by his first name, he always wondered just exactly what it was that prevented her from calling him Claude? He supposed that maybe since she had named him Claudius that she was going to stick to it, but it always set his teeth on edge. Even his father could concede enough to calling him Claude instead of by his full name. Well sometimes anyway. At least there was an effort there. Letting it go like he had his entire life, Claude turned his attention as one of his youngest sisters entered the room.

Smiling as Seneca joined them, Claude passed her a wink as she sat down. It appeared that his original intentions of speaking with his father were going to have to wait. Perhaps after breakfast he could ask to speak with his father alone. Until then, he supposed he would just enjoy his family's company. Typically, a gathering like this was something he avoided, but it was good to see his siblings, if he didn't always feel comfortable around his parents.

He wondered what they all had been up to lately. With no school, surely they had found ways to occupy themselves? He had been working up a storm since his return from the Hogsmeade Trail, after take a brief time to recover and sleep until he felt rested. It was strange to think how even though he had slept fine on the trail, the sleep had never been as restful as he would have liked. Claude was usually a very deep sleeper, it took quite a loud sound to wake him, fortunately, Theresa, his housekeeper was very good at that. He wondered if it was the fact that there were other people around or if it was just the case that they were in the woods where anything could happen that kept him from feeling rested. Either way, once he had gotten back to his own bed, he had never realized just how much he missed it.

"Doing well, thank you mother." He answered the question she didn't ask and turned his attention back to his siblings. "Ready to head to school in a few weeks?" He inquired, though he knew Seneca was not yet old enough to go off to school, he looked at Cash and Valeria. Claude had always looked forward to returning to school, but he had always assumed he was one of very few students who felt that way.

Cassius was genuinely surprised to see his elder brother, who came over much less now that he was a Responsible Adult with his own house. This was a shame, because Claude was also a Ravenclaw and as such, Cash was prone to assuming he made all meals better. (Regardless of whether or not he actually did so.) Still, Claude was a welcome sight, and Cash was pleased that Tiberius had not yet made an appearance. "Morning Claude," he added, shifting in his seat.

He shrugged at the question - he had been up at least a few hours earlier for quidditch games. Of course, quidditch games qualified as extenuating circumstances, and he never really slept the night before, anyways. Cash was struck with a suddenly awkward remembrance of hearing Eli talk in his sleep, and concentrated intently on his index finger for a moment.

The arrival of the woman who never spoke (his mother) and Seneca was welcomed. Cash stifled a wince as Alexandria used Claude's full name, wondering if she even realized that he had a nickname, but otherwise didn't do much until he was addressed again. (Even though it was collectively - he wasn't sure how he felt about being grouped with his Irish twin, but whatever.)

"Well, it'll be shocking to go back to classes," he said, "but I've heard sixth year is one of the best...." If he started ranting now, he was going to get into game schedules and the newly opened positions on the quidditch team, so he cut himself off and drummed his fingertips on his knee.

    • He was quite surprised as, in a matter of time, the entire familyùsave for Cornelia, who was doubtless still lingering in bedùchose to join him, but not quite so surprised as he was by Claudius' arrival. Still, his face betrayed none of this as he rather offhandedly greeted each relative in turn, some (Claudius, Valeria) with more enthusiasmùif it could truly be called thatùthan others (Cassius, his wife). Chatter meandered uselessly from greetings to discussion of the approaching school year, the Lestrange table blissfully unaware of what deeds their patriarch had performed in the night. That much, he knew, was probably for the best: though Valeria was intelligent enough to toe the line and Seneca blindly agreed with whatever he told her to agree with, Claudius' personality was less evident to his father, and Cassius was downright troublesome, with complete disregard for family duty and a flawed moral code.

"And what classes do you intend to enroll in?" Lucius asked his youngest son with purpose, focusing his full (and rather weighty) attention on the boy. He seldom involved himself in the comings, goings, and interests of any of his children, and knew he did not tend to direct Cassius quite so fully as he did his daughters or his elder son. Even Tiberius had seen more of a fatherly nature from Lucius (though it could scarcely be called that) than the Ravenclaw was afforded, though whether it was because Lucius was opposed to Cassius' very nature or he opposed the nature because he had not moulded it intently enough, he could not have said.

It appeared that he and Cash were going to save the conversation this morning as the two of them chatted about his brother's upcoming school year. "I quite enjoyed sixth year." He said, voicing his opinion on the matter. Claude had done very well on his OWLs and had his pick of classes, to which he probably too more than was necessary, but he had severely enjoyed school, so there was no problem for him there. Claude could only assume Cash had done well on his OWLs, though he wasn't sure as nobody had said anything to him.

Astonished when his father joined their conversation, Claude fell quiet for a moment. This was new. Well not so much for him, but for his father to stop and focus on Cash was something new. Claude had gotten used to it, being the oldest and the oldest son meant that he had been under strict scrutiny his entire life and by now he was used to it. Though he hadn't exactly ever expected to find himself at an arranged marriage at twenty-two, but his parents never failed to surprise him.

While his father focused in on Cash, Claude took a few more bites of his breakfast, making a quick sly face at his youngest sister. Claude missed spending time with his siblings. When they all lived under the same roof it had been easier, though he had been less inclined to do so at the time. It appeared now, that it wasn't as easy that he had taken it for granted at the time.

Listening for Cash's answer, Claude leaned back in his seat and sipped at his coffee. Despite the fact that he had come in with a clear purpose, he was finding that spending a little time with his family was not as bad as he originally anticipated. He was certainly glad he had his own house though, very, very glad.

Cash would have been perfectly content to make small talk with Claude for the entire breakfast, but it appeared that was not to be. His eyes widened at the fact that his father was actively speaking to him for no apparent reason other than to ask about his classes. Well. This was unprecedented - and worrying. Cassius had always been a little bit worried by Lucius, but the nightmares from earlier in the summer had made that even worse. And he was still quite certain that Lucius was fonder of Tiberius than he was of Cash, even if he usually had other things on his mind nowadays - it would be an educated guess to say that chances were strong that Cash would revisit that obsession again one day.

Right now, though, he needed to say his classes without making an idiot of himself. (Even if he was currently wishing for the earth to swallow him whole. Lucius' attention was rather unnerving, Cash found.) He mentally organized his classes, hoping to not disappoint his father more than he usually seemed to. If only Alexandria had been the patriarch! She was dumb enough that Cash was certain anything would have pleased her. "I plan on enrolling in Arithmancy, Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, and Potions," Cash said, sounding more at ease than he felt. Valeria didn't take Transfiguration last year either! he mentally exclaimed, just in case. And it wasn't like History of Magic even mattered - it was, after all, taught by a muggleborn.

    • A rarity though it was, Lucius listened attentively as his youngerùyoungest, since he stopped caring enough to try for more children just after (but before knowing that) Seneca was conceivedùson, oblivious to what, if any, chatter was continuing around them. The boy's answers were perfunctory, but Lucius nodded approvingly as each was rattled offùwith the exception of Herbology, which he considered to be quite useless. What he did not approve of, however, were certain courses omitted from Cassius' listùnotably, Lucius' own specialty.

In response, the wizard uttered only two words, doubtless ones that the Ravenclaw had been anticipating, his eyes cold and unyielding as he uttered them: "No Transfiguration?"

Andria had fallen silent for a while as she allowed the conversation to flow into one ear and out the other. She really wasn't paying any attention to all to the goings on around her and in fact found more fascination in the pattern on the table cloth. It really was a very intricate and pretty pattern, had she picked this one out or had someone else? She couldn't remember...

Frowning to herself as she failed to remember if it was a tablecloth of her choosing, she slowly slipped her mind back into the conversation just soon enough to catch the very tail end of what had just been said. "I always thought flower arranging ought to have been a class at Hogwarts, I should have enjoyed that immensely," she suddenly declared before falling silent again, perfectly unaware of the general tone of the conversation between Lucius and Cassius besides the fact classes were being mentioned.

And this was exactly why Claude so very rarely visit his family; they were just so damn awkward. Between his mother and her airy comments and the clear discomfort of his poor brother, Claude realized his family was just plain old awkward and strange... but he supposed that ran with the name. While Claude knew he had is own eccentricities, his family was just so weird.

Contemplating just how much longer he would have to subject himself to this craziness. Listening politely, as he had finished up his breakfast already and was enjoying his coffee, or as much as he could at the moment. It as a little unreal to watch his father focus on Cash, though Claude was not complaining. Being the oldest he too had his fair share of the focus in their family.

He wondered if they would even notice if he got up and left, just made up some excuse and headed out for home. Well it never hurt to try. His original plans for the morning had been derailed, so he figured he'd try again another day, or maybe catch his father away from home. "Well, this has been pleasant, I should stop by more often," No, he really wouldn't. Standing, he pushed his chair in. "I have a few things to catch up for work, so I'm going to head out." Thank goodness. "See you all soon." He smiled and waved, particularly at his youngest sister. His smile became more apologetic towards Cash, because he knew his brother would have to suffer a bit longer.

And I'm racking my brain for a new improved way

To let you know you're more to me than what I know how to say

You're OK with the way this is going to be

This is going to be the best thing we've ever seen

And, of course, Cassius' fear for this conversation came true. He blinked for a moment, but was luckily saved from his impending death-of-fear by Alexandria's comment. Flower arranging. Sometimes, Cash wondered about his mother.

Claude you traitor I'm going to burn your house down. The leaving of his elder brother was entirely unhelpful to Cash's goal for the morning - that was, to not have a heart attack because of Lucius. "Goodbye, Claude," Cash said, narrowing his eyes at his brother.

Oh, right. He had to speak to his father. This was daunting. "I didn't - quite accomplish the OWL grade that Professor Beckett requires for the NEWT class," Cash admitted. He made a mental note to never come down for breakfast again. Ever.

    • The departure of his eldest son merited only a nod from Lucius, who turned his attentions, hawklike, back on the younger. The wizard was not one to lavish much attention upon his children, but when he did so it was relentless, and seldom something that they desired. Cassius would not get out of the conversation with any measure of ease. He was not surprised by the revelation that the lad's grades hadn't been good enough. The boy would not know discipline if it shat in his wardrobe, one of many qualities Cassius possessed that irked his father to no end.

"Perhaps had you devoted more time to your studies, you would not have performed so abysmally," Lucius commented without any real emotion to his tone, though his eyes expressed the full weight of his disappointment. "I suspect you might perform better in future if I were to write to Headmaster Black and revoke your quidditch permissions." Of this, the wizard had little doubt. He was not his sister, contentùeven proudùto let his children squander their lives away on a useless pastime.
unless you're related to him, work under him, or are a mudblood, lucius is actually very friendly. your character might find him intimidating, but would not consider him a giant dick, esp. if they are also a UCPB.
