    Samson Jane

Full Name: Samson Andrew Jane (anglicized from Sahil Jain)
    Nicknames: Sam
    Birthdate: February 27, 1852
    Current Age: 35
Occupation: Member of the Werewolf Capture Unit
    Reputation: 4
    Residence: London
    Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Wand: Fir, ashwinder scale, 12", rigid - an heirloom wand
    Blood Status: Halfblood
    Social Class: Middle Class
    Winston Jane - father - b. 1825
    Madeline Jane - mother - b. 1823
    • Cynthia Jane - sister b. 1861
    • Natalie Jane - sister - b. 1863/d. 1885
+ a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins

Standing at five feet eleven inches, Sam is noticeably taller than the average man. The combination of his occupation and his athletic hobbies has led to the development of well defined muscles. He makes a conscious effort to avoid having an imposing demeanor outside of work with mixed success.

Sam has mid-toned brown skin and striking, dark features. He keeps his thick, black hair cut short for the sake of practicality and prefers to let his facial hair grow out slightly. He has doe-like brown eyes. Sam has a long scar on his neck that is usually partially obscured by the collars of his shirts. His wardrobe consists almost entirely of dark suits and white button down shirts. His sense of style isn't likely to become more adventurous as he's quite paranoid about coming off as flamboyant.

He is right handed, but will use his wand with his left if it's necessary.
1852| Samson was born in Bradford to Madhurima and Wahib Jain, who had recently immigrated to Britain from India. They call him Sahil, but decide to anglicize the entire family's names soon after to give him and their future children the best chance at having a "proper English childhood" (#colonialism).

1854| They move to London when Winston begins working as a translator for the Ministry of Magic.

1856| Samson shows his first signs of magic when he starts creating showers of multicolored sparks to amuse himself while his parents are busy with work.

1861| His parents' efforts to have another child are finally successful. A girl is born in the fall. After being an only child for so long, Samson is reluctant about being an older brother. He ignores his sister for most of the first year of her life. He doesn't warm up to her until a few years later.

1863-64| After Samson receives his Hogwarts letter over the summer, his father gifts him the wand that's been handed down to first sons in his family for generations. He's miffed about not getting a new wand and has difficulty "taming" the one he's been given. At Hogwarts, he is sorted into Slytherin. Academically, he proves to have a good grasp on theory, but succeeding at the practical side of things eludes him. Another sister is born in November while he's still at school. Having adjusted to his lot in life somewhat, he's actually happy about the idea of the baby. The second half of the school year sees Samson reach a tentative peace with his wand, with it misbehaving only some of the time.

1864-65| In his second year, Sam takes on several extracurricular activities including club Quidditch, club Quodpot, dueling club, and leisure sports club. Getting his energy out there helps him focus in class and his grades continue to improve.

1865-66| As a third year, Sam selects Ghoul Studies and Care of Magical Creatures as his OWL electives.

1866-67| Fourth year brings uncomfortable changes for Sam. With puberty in full swing, all the boys around him can't seem to stop talking about girls and their various appeals. While Sam certainly doesn't mind them, he can't see what the big deal is. None of the feelings he's meant to be having for them manifest and it gets to the point where he'd rather avoid the subject entirely. He feels like there's something wrong with him, but he's afraid of what he'll find if he looks into it too deeply. Sam spends the entire year dealing with being intensely uncomfortable in his own skin.

1867-68| The summer offers Sam little reprieve from his mess of hormones and confusion. Without a confidante to vent to, he internalizes and represses everything as best he can. School is stressful enough as is and he doesn't need whatever this is distracting him while he prepares for his OWLs. To that end, Sam throws himself into his studies, using his determination to do well on his exams to ignore anything inconvenient. At this point, he knows he wants to be a Ministry man like his father and keeps that goal in mind as the year wears on. His exams go well, for the most part. History of Magic is a total wash, but everything else is something to be proud of.

With his marks, he briefly entertains the notion of being a lawyer, but quickly decides that a desk job isn't for him. He needs something with more life (and recognition) in it. At his father's suggestion, he looks into the auror's training program. He knows how difficult it'll be, but he was never one to back away from a challenge.

1868-69| Sam cuts the classes not required by the ATP for his NEWTs. Though his classes are more advanced, he's taking less of them which leads to unexpected amounts of free time. Old worries start to creep back up on him in his spare moments, gnawing away at his resolve to ignore them. Sam tries to convince himself that he's just a late bloomer where sexuality is concerned, that he'll wake up one day and feel the "right" way about it, but his skills at self-deception can only go so far.

Things come to a head and he has a proper crisis about it, breaking down spectacularly in a bathroom stall when he can no longer deny the truth about himself. The way his eyes linger on boys isn't meaningless curiosity. The way he felt about close male friends over the years wasn't just deep, platonic affection. He was a homosexual and there was nothing to be done about it. Hours later, Sam pulls himself together and feels a new weight on his shoulders thanks to the revelations he's had. He doesn't become withdrawn, exactly, but he becomes more guarded and reserved out of fear his secret will be discovered.

1869-70| Anxiety about NEWTs and his future mount as exam time approaches. He keeps these feelings to himself and becomes obsessive about studying. His behavior isn't particularly remarkable as most of the students in his year are in the same boat, but that doesn't make it any less unhealthy. The sense of relief he feels after he sits for the exams and gets his results is incomparable.

Sam graduates and is happy to leave school behind.

1870-73| With the required NEWTs in hand, Sam applies for the Auror Training Program. He is accepted into the program and begins training in earnest. As time goes on, he befriends some other trainees as they commiserate over the difficulty of their courses which makes coping with everything slightly easier. Sam also begins to get closer to his sisters through the letters he sends to keep them updated on what's he's learning. His youngest sister is especially interested in what he has to say and they write to each other frequently. In 1873, he graduates from the ATP and becomes a full fledged auror.

1875-78| Lou Jameshill is added to his rotation of partners and the friendship they struck up as trainees continues to develop. They become close friends and, eventually, Sam begins liking him far more than he ought to. He's well aware that the chance of his feelings being reciprocated is slim so he tries not to let them get away from him. However, he's so charmed by the other man that his efforts at not falling in like are largely unsuccessful. He develops a false sense of hope that Lou shares his preferences which is inevitably dashed to pieces.

1879| Lou begins courting and Sam is completely fine with it. Totally fine. He certainly doesn't nurse a broken heart over a man he could never have because that would be ridiculous. So, yes, he's completely fine with it and everything is sunshine and rainbows.

1880| Lou gets engaged and Sam decides that pining after him is too pathetic to sustain. He issues congratulations through gritted teeth and rebounds (as much as someone can rebound from unrequited feelings) with a string of men, each more forgettable than the last.

1881| Sam is informed of Lou's death at the hands of a werewolf. He lives in denial until the funeral, where it hits him that one of his closest friends is dead. Sam is utterly miserable and has to take some time off to avoid completely losing it on the job. During this period he drinks heavily and, on one particularly bad night, he confesses the full depth of his feelings to his youngest sister in a letter that he sends off before passing out. He doesn't remember doing it until she confronts him with the evidence months later.

Sam is sure his relationship with her is ruined until she explains that she isn't upset because she's disgusted by him. Natalie tells him she's upset because he carried so much pain alone and didn't trust her enough to share it with her. She doesn't understand everything, but she doesn't have to. He's her brother and she'll love him no matter what. Sam cries harder than he has in years. Natalie comforts him, tells him that everything is going to be okay. Sam believes her.

1885| Four years later, Natalie is conducting research on rare plants in a remote part of Scotland. While on a nighttime excursion during the full moon, her group is attacked by a werewolf. The werewolf is able to mortally wound her three colleagues and maul her before it is driven off. She's half dead by the time she manages to drag herself back to their camp. The healer accompanying them treats her as best he can in the field and she float in and out of consciousness for the better half of a week. She comes to in the ward of a small hospital and relays her tale to hospital staff and local authorities, but lies about one major detail: the kind of creature she encountered in the woods.

After she recovers, she returns to London where the trauma of the attack catches up with her. It's obvious to Sam that she's haunted by what happened to her, but she refuses all offers of help. A few days before the next full moon, Natalie appears to be in much better spirits and Sam is relieved to see that his sister is returning to her old self. It makes his later discovery of her body all the more devastating.

In her suicide note, she confesses that she was bitten by a werewolf and couldn't live with becoming a monster.

Once they get through the burial, Sam moves back home to be closer to his parents who are understandably shaken by the sudden death of their young daughter. In addition to his sadness, Sam also harbors a great deal of guilt over not being able to protect her. The anger comes later, and when it comes, it consumes him.

1886| Spurred on by his own losses and continued stories of werewolf attacks Sam makes the decision to move to the Werewolf Capture Unit.

1887| Growing frustrated with the unit's inability to combat the werewolf menace, Sam begins to press leadership to take on more aggressive strategies. They aren't particularly receptive to his suggestions. After reading news of a werewolf attack in Glasgow, Sam decides that he's going to do what it takes to make sure this threat is eliminated whether his bosses approve of his methods or not.
Outwardly sarcastic and cynical, but very secretly hopeful that the world isn't as godawful as he thinks it is.

Sociable, but doesn't do well with sharing emotions or getting attached to other people.

Terribly sentimental, likes keeping mementos that have personal meaning to him.

Ambitious but has recently been driven more by a need to do what he feels is right than a desire for glory or recognition.

Intense and dogged; Sam isn't likely to get distracted or dissuaded from his goals no matter how improbable success might seem.

He has no interest in dying a hero's death and would prefer to take options which would allow him to fight another day. However, he wouldn't save his own life at the expense of someone else's.

He doesn't struggle with his sexuality in that he's accepted it for what it is. His issue is more with society's rampant homophobia making him intensely paranoid about being outed. He's fully prepared to marry and have children to make his family happy. Short flings and secretive affairs with men don't truly satisfy him, but he feels that's all he can hope for.
