Troll Trauma

June 20th, 1888 - Hogsmeade Hospital
presumable shortly after  this thread
@'Zinnia Potts' & Clifford Goyle

Well, Hogsmeade was certainly keeping her on her toes!

After hearing of a troll attack, of which the gravely injured patients were sent on the train to St. Mungo's, Nathalie, who was supposed to be taking a nap somewhere in a loaned office for a few minutes of rest, pulled herself out at the commotion. She'd already proven adept at basic muggle medical care, setting bones, stitches, treating mild illnesses thanks to some tips from a long ago friend, and so despite her fatigue, she offered to tackle a patient who had been tackled at some point during the troll attack.

Brushing her wild hair from her face, Nat pulled the curtain back from an occupied bed in the emergency services wing to find a pretty young brunette sitting there. She'd lost Mr. Wentworth around somewhere, though thankfully he was also proving very capable throughout their tenure in Hogsmeade. He would get a high recommendation from her when his promotion time was up. "Miss? I'm Nathalie," Nat had a tendency to introduce herself by her first name, for comfort's sake, especially to other women. "Were you involved in the troll attack?" Nat was about to close the curtain behind her when she met resistance in doing so.

"Oh, Mr. Goyle, was there something I could help you with?"

Zinnia wasn't entirely sure how long it had been since the attack. What she did know, however, was that she was in quite a deal of pain. Tears had started fallin again but at least this time they were silent tears. They didn't stop her from being any less miserable though.

She glanced up when the curtain around her bed was pulled back, cradling her right arm somewhat protectively against her chest. She tried to smile at the woman but winced as a result thanks to the glass biting into her cheek some more.

She didn't have a chance to respond, however, as a gentleman stepped up and prevented the woman from closing the curtain.

The rumors about the troll incident reached Hogsmeade Hospital along with several more fortunate victims. Most others were sent to St. Mungo’s, but there were those whose injuries were trivial enough to mend without resorting to magic. And as those people suffered Creature-Induced Injuries, it was Clifford’s responsibility to aid them. So he headed where one of the troll victims had to be as soon as he could. But as it turned out, Clifford wasn’t the first healer who came to the poor girl. Good news, as another pair of hands was always useful, especially when healing suddenly became so much harder.

“Miss Jennings, glad you’re here,” he looked at Nathalie, then at the patient. “Ah, you should be one of the heroes that quelled a troll,” he smiled, trying his best to make the injured girl feel better. “Please don’t worry, miss, we’ll do our best.” He didn’t mention that their best wasn’t as good as before, due to the lack of magic. Making patients feel positive was something Clifford always tried to achieve.

After considering Zinnia for a couple of seconds, he leaned to Natalie and said quietly, “This is our most urgent patient at the moment, miss Jennings. We should probably give her all our attention.” He paused, gathered his resolve, and added, “I suggest we start with those glass shards.” The damage wasn’t that bad, but without magic, it could still be painful to mend.

Nat hadn't realized she was getting help in this situation, but it would make things much easier with two of them handling it, she supposed. She thought Mr. Goyle to be laying it on a little thick, but she didn't say anything and instead smiled to herself. Instead she checked over the little chart she'd been giving and an initial diagnoses from when Miss Potts had been brought in. Nathalie knew a Potts or two back in school herself... "Does your family own the flower shop here in town?" A little distraction would help. "I believe I went to school with a couple of your sisters." One of whom was a healer too now, if Nat wasn't mistaken.

She wavered about where to start, but knew whichever they did start with, they would need to help dull the ache a little "I think we should start with a little something dull the pain first." She passed the young woman a comforting smile. A pain potion would at least take the edge off. Nat was being prudent about her use of them, knowing they couldn't brew any here and would be relying on St. Mungo's for more if they needed them. However, setting what appeared to be a broken wrist and removing some glass would be far less painful afterward for the poor dear.

Rolling up her sleeves again, Nat pulled the potion from her pocket and popped the cork out, "It's a little slimy," She warned. "But it will help and then maybe we should take a look at that wrist." She eyed Mr. Goyle in careful consideration, as she didn't want to openly contradict him, but it would be much easier to get at the glass if her arm was stable.

Zinnia's dark eyes darted back and forth between the two healers, not entirely sure what to think initially. She wasn't entirely sure how she felt about the two of them talking quietly so she couldn't exactly hear what was being said. Shouldn't they have been talking to her about what needed to be done?

But then the female healer, Natalie, was addressing her. She nodded in response. It helped to quell the anxiety some when she mentioned knowing her sister. She assumed she probably knew Amaryllis mostly since they were both healers. They looked to be about the same age anyways. Not that she was really a good judge of age by appearance.

She eyed the slimy potion that was handed to her. Crinkling up her nose, she down it as quickly as she could but gagged on it somewhat. "My wrist," she managed to say after a few minutes of trying to be rid of the slimy taste in her mouth and throat, "Will it be okay? I'm an artist. If I can't keep painting.." She trailed off with that thought, not wanting to even think about it.

Clifford smiled as Nathalie tried to strike a conversation with Zinnia. Relaxed patients were easier and more pleasant to work with. As Nathalie mentioned she was going to start with the wrist, Clifford frowned. If the break was “displaced”, they would have to set bones back into the right place first, which would be rather painful, even with a a potion. This would probably lead to the girl wincing and cutting her cheek further with glass shards. Even more blood would get contaminated, but thankfully Clifford had enough leeches to fix this.

As Zinnia mentioned how important her wrist was to her, he decided not to object to fixing it first. So he nodded to Nathalie and said, “We shall check whether there is any bone displacement.” He then reached for Zinnia’s hand, so he could examine it closer, ”May I?”

It seemed Miss Potts was more worried about her wrist as well and Nat smiled sympathetically. "Don't worry we'll get you all squared away. I doubt there will be any lasting damage." And if there was, well when there magic again, there were other ways to take care of it. So far as Nat could tell however, it didn't look too bad, no protruding bones, swollen yes, but likely a very bad sprain or a small break.

Fortunately Mr. Goyle seemed to be ready to take care of that and while he examined the wrist, Nat set about getting things they would need for a splint and then the glass extraction. The splint was the easy part, but Nat worried about the need for stitches in Miss Potts' cheek. Well the wouldn't know until they really got in there. Merlin this would be so much easier and faster with magic!

Zinnia was clearly still unsure about it all. The glass was one thing, she could survive with a scar on her face. But not being able to paint? That was a terrifying thought. She'd rather have died at the hands of the troll than not be able to paint anymore. But they both seemed to think that she would be fine.

Biting down on her bottom lip, she simply nodded before she offered her hand to the man so that he could examine it.

Clifford took Zinnia’s hand and gave her wrist a tactile inspection, watching the girl’s face closely, trying to notice any wince as he pressed his fingers. It seemed to be a displaced fracture, and the bones needed to be set in place. Moreover, the fracture was also unstable, so the wrist had to be held until the bones solidly healed, otherwise they would move into an undesired position again.

”The potion should be in its full effect by now, right?” Clifford asked Nathalie, not sure how quick those St. Mungo’s potions worked. He assumed the London hospital had different suppliers and wanted to make sure the pain would be at its weakest when he put the bones back into position. ”We’ll also need a splint, the fracture is unstable.”

"I've the materials for the splint right here." A step ahead in that respect, Nat rather thought they should give the potion a few more moments. "I'd wait a few, really let it settle in." She answered his inquiry with an easy smile before turning her attention back to Miss Potts.

"Can I get you anything else, water? Was there somebody you wanted notified?" It wouldn't be hard to step out for a moment and have an intern take care of those for her. Despite the fact that the girl before her was no Hogwarts student, being in the hospital on your own could sometimes set people on edge. Nat always worked hard to keep people at ease, but she understood how jarring the experience could be.  She finished up getting their supplies ready, taking her time so that she could give a few moments time to the potion before bringing the tray of split supplies over to Mr. Goyle.

Swinging around the bed with ease, Nat set the tray atop the nearest flat surface within reach. "Alright should be good now. Let's get this set so you can get back to painting as soon as possible." She passed Zinnia another reassuring smile. "You will definitely feel this, it'll be uncomfortable, though shouldn't hurt to much." She warned. Realistically feeling one's bones moving about was not a sensation anyone would enjoy, with or without pain medication.

One would think that the troll had crushed her windpipe or something by the way Zinnia had remained mute. She'd let them do what they needed to, nodding when necessary. But when a question was turned directly to her and what she might want, she couldn't help but to stare mutely again and blinking.

"I.. no," she said with a slight shake of her head, "It's okay. I'm fine." And she was. Or at least she thought she was. Perhaps it was still just the shock of it all but she didn't really feel a whole lot of anything. Mentally or physically. She supposed that the pain potion could also be to blame for that.

And then it became clear it would be time to set her wrist. She nodded and then braced herself. She didn't know what to expect but she just hoped it would be done quickly.

Clifford nodded to Nathalie, ready to give the potion a few more minutes. He appreciated that his colleague tried to put Zinnia at ease, although it didn’t seem to work that well. The girl was still pretty tense. ”Thanks you, Miss Jennings,” he said when the splint supply tray was ready.

”Get ready,” Clifford asked Zinnia and set the wrist in its proper position not waiting for a reply. There was a quiet sound of moving bones. Without delay, he started to assemble a splint around the wrist. ”Is everything alright?” Clifford was prepared for the girl losing consciousness or trying to whisk her hand away from the him, although he didn’t think anything like this would happen, Zinnia took it all stoically so far.

Nathalie took Miss Potts' free hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. She was rather relieved that Mr. Goyle seemed to be quite prepared to do the setting of the wrist. Though she had a strong stomach and the fortitude to follow through, the feeling of physically putting bones back into place was nauseating at best.

It would be worse for Zinnia though and even Nat held her breath while Mr. Goyle took care of it. Nat moved to wrap an arm around the younger woman's shoulders just in case, watching her rather than Mr. Goyle. As he had already anticipated, there was always a chance someone would get sick or pass out from a set like that.

Casting Mr. Goyle a quirk  of an eyebrow to see how he felt about the set, she kept an arm around Zinnia, just in case while she waited for the young woman to respond.

Zinnia certainly hadn't known what to expect but there would have been no way to prepare her for what happened as Mr. Goyle set her wrist. Wincing at the obvious discomfort and sound, her whole body shuddered even as Miss Jennings held her other hand and did what she could to offer comfort. Having clenched her teeth hard to try and stop herself from crying out or truly crying, she now felt her jaw ache somewhat.

She had told herself to breath but found she'd actually been holding her breath through the process. She let it out in a ragged sort of gasp as she offered Mr. Goyle a stiff nod in response to his question. "I-I think so," she managed to get out as she tried to refocus her breathing so that she didn't faint. It took a few deep breaths before the wooziness in her head settled to where she was sure she wouldn't indeed pass out.

"I'd rather not have to do that ever again," she said with wide eyes up to them, though a small smile played at her features as she spoke.

”That’s understandable,” he smiled back at Zinnia, as she mentioned she'd rather not go through it again. ”But such inconveniences are exceptional. As soon as the Ministry solves this fog problem, bone fracture treatment returns to its normal, more conventional and less painful way.” Clifford wasn’t sure if this reassuring would have any positive effect, but he felt obliged to try. ”So you probably won’t experience it ever again.”

”And - not without Miss Jennings’ help - done,” Clifford announced, finishing the split, as he gave Nathalie an appreciating look. But their work wasn’t yet finished, the glass shards were still in Zinnia’s cheek. Thankfully, the potion probably prevented her from feeling how those shards cut her cheek even further with every facial muscle move.

Clifford wanted to give Zinna some rest, but on the other hand, the sooner they finish with the glass, the sooner it would be over for the poor girl. He was thinking about asking her himself, but then decided to leave the matters in Nathalie’s hands. She seemed to be much better at talking to patients.

Well, the battle was half over. Though in Nat's opinion, that had been the easier of the two feats. The second was nothing to sneeze at either though. Removing glass shards from skin was often delicate and tricky. Fortunately, even as tired as she was, she had a steady hand. Since Mr. Goyle had handled the setting and splint, Nat supposed it was her turn.

"I'm sure your sister will be able to keep an eye on it for you and make sure everything is healing alright." She tended to do that herself to all of her family and friends, whether they wanted her to or not. "Not to see to that cheek," Nat passed the young Miss Potts another reassuring smile as she moved to grab the other tray of medicinal implements she'd readied.

Leaning in close, Nat brushed her hair from own face, taking care to examine the offending pieces of glass critically. It only appeared to be a few, which was fortunate at least. It really had been a while since Nat had done emergency medicine, but it came back quick enough. Wounds were not really her thing, illnesses were, but she could handle. "I need a little more light," She cast the inquiry toward Mr. Goyle as she gently tipped Zinnia's head at an easier angle for her to work. "You shouldn't feel anything but some pulling, I shouldn't think." By now the pain potion was in full swing, so they should be all set.
