A medium-sized bouquet featuring a large dahlia, surrounded by red fuchsia and pink calla lilies delivered to the Scamander residence in the middle of the day, while Marlena would be working, with the attached card:

May 21st, 1891
Dear Miss S,

As a gesture of appreciation for your assistance last month, please accept this bouquet. The colors will, I hope, compliment your sitting room very nicely — but if I have chosen the wrong shade please don't hesitate to send them back with your most severe admonishments; I know you have quite impeccable taste and would hate to think you had compromised it only to appease my pride.

The sculpture you helped advise me on will be delivered Wednesday of next week. Perhaps you and your mother might pay a call at some point thereafter? I might seek your opinion on whether it is best placed by the arbor in the entrance or across from the garden fountain. I'm inclined towards the latter but worry the spot may be too frequently in the shade to properly showcase the artistry of the piece.

Sincerely,
E. Selwyn

Mr. Selwyn,

The bouquet is lovely. The callas do not quite match the warmth of our sitting room, but they do compliment the wallpaper in the dining room most splendidly. I thank you for the gift.

My mother and I would be happy to pay a call. I admit I have never been much involved in the decorating of my own family's home—my sister has always been eager to fill that role—but I cannot imagine any harm in giving my opinion.

Sincerely,
Miss Scamander

Dear Miss Scamander,

Apologies are in order; the bouquet was intended for a different Miss S, though I imagine you must have gathered that since you were not involved in the acquisition of any statues last month. I am left to wonder, then, whether your response was meant to tease me or was a bold dismissal of the typical structure of these things, which would necessitate we become at least acquainted before issuing and accepting invitations. Whatever the case, I think it in poor tastes to rescind a gift or an invitation. I've ordered another bouquet for the correct Miss S but encourage you to keep the ones you received (particularly if they compliment your dining room as well as you say), and if you are inclined to pay a call I would be happy to receive you and your mother for tea whenever is most convenient for you.

Sincerely,
E. Selwyn
