April 01, 1888 — High Street, Hogsmeade

There were very few days that Helga actually had the opportunity to spend time with her only brother, and Sunday was that one day. Today wasn't just any Sunday, though — it was Easter Sunday! With rumors circulating about all the hidden treasures that filled the vendors' carts (and even hid in the bushes!), Helga had dragged Eugene onto High Street.

She was flipping through very normal street Easter cards while her brother lurked in the background, and picked out a very appropriate and not at all suggestive card for her brother.
    I hope your happy days
    don't — hop — away!
Or at least that's what it read upon purchasing it. She'd pushed through the crowd of people, offering quiet apologizes to passersby, before reaching Eugene. With a smile, she held it out to him.

"Happy, Easter! Go on, read it!" she urged, not bothering to glance over his shoulder so that she could see that it had indeed changed — and to something that was not at all appropriate.
I hope your day's been pleasant and mild,
but I must tell you now: I'm with child!

Though he was surrounded by sisters, Eugene wouldn't trade his family for the world. Fortunately there was only Marlena and Helga at home with him and frankly since he worked so much he didn't see them nearly enough for them to really get to him. It had its drawbacks certainly, but it wasn't all that bad.

Spending the day outside on Easter was pleasant! With Helga in tow, or rather he was the one being towed as she dragged him up High Street, Eugene was quite pleased with the day so far. Helga was as enthusiastic as ever and he had no issues letting her wander at her own pace to stop and whatever caught her eye. Currently she was looking at Easter cards and Eugene was kicking at the ground as he waited nearby, not hovering, but not exactly looking either. Truthfully he was people watching, they simply fascinated him as he watched them mill about or bustle along on their errands for the day.

Helga came skipping back his way and held a card out to him. Surprised, as he assumed she was getting something for their parents, Eugene smile a dopey kind of smile and opened it. The picture on the front was normal enough, but the words inside! "Helga what?" He turned wide brown eyes on her, eyebrows nearly lost in his haphazard hair at how high they were raised. "Surely this is a joke." Eugene was the middle child in his family, not the oldest, though the only boy and as such he was very protective of his sisters, especially the baby one!

Helga was not usually the type of girl who wore a frown — perhaps for a second now and then, and only when spooked, but definitely not usually — but her expression immediately dropped at her brother's reaction to her well-meaning card. Did he have something against bunnies? Was the pun not satisfactory? Hopping bunnies were just so cute, though! A pout slipped onto her face as she stared up at her brother.

"A joke? Why would I be joking about that?" she asked, obviously hurt. Did he think she didn't want him to have a nice day? A nice future? Boo him for being a downer, then!

Mildly horrified, Eugene's mouth fell open. "I know it's April Fools, but honestly!" He stammered out, looking between the card and his sister again. Surely she had to be joking. His sweet, innocent baby sister was not out gallivanting with men doing that.

He shoved the card back her way with a nervous laugh. Nope, not real. Eugene refused to believe that one was any kind of true. Nope, not happening. Denial was the way to go.

Now Eugene's behavior just didn't make any sense. Brows furrowed in frustration, Helga snagged the card and quickly began to open it, looking for any signs of what she suspected might be magical tricks. It was exactly the same as when she'd read it. Nothing. Could Eugene really be that offended by bunnies?

"Honestly what, Eugene?" she asked in a pout. "I just don't want your happiness to — hop — away!"

Eugene was flabbergasted, this made absolutely no sense. "Helga it says- it says..." He did NOT want to say it in public and so he pulled his sister in close, gently of course and whispered in her ear, "It says you're with child." The tone was incredulous, but worried at the same time. He snatched the card back and held it for his sister to see, pointing to the words on the inside.

More flabbergasted than scandalized by his assumption (likely because her knowledge of baby-making was slim to none), Helga eyed the card before rolling her eyes. "Honestly, Eugene," she sighed dramatically. "You know I can't be with child. It's physically impossible; I'm not even married! I've never kissed anyone."

Eugene winced. She had him there, but STILL! His anxiety was starting to dissipate, thank Merlin that was NOT true, but now he was wondering what on earth was going on. "That's what it said." Truthfully he would have probably fainted if she said it was actually true, but the shock was still there, even if it wasn't.

"Why in the name of Merlin's beard would the card even say that then?"

Honestly!!

While Eugene seemed to believe her, he still looked visibly upset by the card she'd given him. It made no sense; it clearly said something different when she'd purchased it. Even if she hadn't looked at it that closely, she didn't know how she'd miss such a scandalous statement written in the text!

"I don't know," she practically whined, shrugging her shoulders in a loose way that a child might. "Maybe they were playing a prank on us. It's a sorry prank to play on Easter, though," she complained, glancing back in the direction of the direction before noticing—

"Hey, he's disappeared!" Her tone was audibly upset and her features scrunched up in both confusion and frustration. What sort of businesses were they running on High Street today?

Now that his heart wasn't beating faster than necessary, though Eugene was fairly certain nothing could scare him quite like that, he supposed perhaps his sister was right; maybe the card had been a prank of sorts. "People always think they're so clever." It was what usually got them in trouble.

Nodding in agreement with her that it was pretty sorry thing to do on a holiday, he followed Helga's gaze toward the stand only to find it gone! "Well if that doesn't implicate them, I don't know what would! I must say I'm very glad that none of this makes any sense, nor is any kind of true, so let's move on with our day!" Eugene was very excited to move past this in every sense.

"Let's find something not so terrifying to do." He chuckled and looked around. If he saw that card booth again he would certainly be giving them a piece of his mind!
