February 5th, 1888 — Irvingly Casino
He would have, of course, preferred to take the meeting at one of the clubs, or even a restaurant in London. There was something Aldous found so crass, so forced about the casino—and Irvingly as a whole, if he was honest—and so the wizard had until now been successful in his efforts to avoid it. The Dutchman, though, had been quite keen to see the little mixed community, and as he would be paying for lunch and this was a business meeting, Aldous had not been in any position to debate the matter.
Fabricating an excuse had seemed rather childish an option to the wizard, and so he now sat stiffly at one of the casino’s dining tables, his brandy all but untouched and his cane resting up against the table’s edge, altogether alone as his companion had gone to relieve himself (that he knew the nature of his companion’s absence was, likewise, something he found distasteful).
The meeting had, at the very least, been fruitful. It was the Dutchman’s intent to establish magical berths in England for his steamships, which would in turn increase the shipping potential of local businesses—and tax revenues for the Ministry. It was far from a done deal, but it was a deal that Aldous would be happy to facilitate, for all that he found the man’s company onerous.
Still, it was preferable to the bowl of soup that landed in his lap, sending the wizard sprawling towards the floor in an altogether undignified fashion.

The gentleman seated at one of the dining tables, looking for all the world as though he were being forced to stay in his seat, in this establishment even, though a threat to either his life or his loved ones, was certainly an oddity in the casino. She had never seen him before, highly doubted she would see him again, and she had the distinct impression that unlike a number of their other patrons he was precisely as respectable as he appeared. Which made him the very last man in the building that deserved to have soup land on a highly sensitive area but the moment it did Cassie sprang into action from the other side of the room.
“Go into the back now,” she said calmly, through gritted teeth, taking hold of the perpetrator’s arm and guiding the young girl away, not wanting to even risk saying her name just in case he decided to take action against her. Tilly was just seventeen and far from the brightest, but a remarkably easy target if somebody was so inclined; she had been shaky all day since the incident last night with the Kestrals player and his wondering hands. Really it had been a matter of time.
“Sir, I really cannot begin to apologise,” she said, crouching to the ground and holding out her hand for him to pull himself up. From this close the stain on his trousers was rather…unfortunate but the soup from the kitchen was seldom what one could call hot so she hoped he had fallen through shock rather than injury. "Where does it...erm...where does it hurt?"

The offending server was spirited away by another before Aldous could react directly; instead, the wizard found himself left with another woman altogether, one who had not been involved and thus, who he could not in good conscience chastise—however much his anger might have been building.
Having landed on his bad leg had sent a pain shooting up the length of his body, rendering Aldous embarrassingly shaky as he accepted the waitress’ hand and awkwardly struggled to his feet, the bulk of his weight on his one good leg as he firmly gripped the back of his chair with the opposite hand.
With that ordeal complete and several long moments to compose himself, the wizard was at least able to reply to her inquiries.
“Only my pride, I assure you,” came his response, though his stance likely betrayed otherwise. “The apology is appreciated, but unnecessary—it was not, after all, your doing.”

“All the same sir,” she replied, resisting the urge to cast a glance behind her to ensure Tilly was out of the line of sight. One never knew when gentlemen might turn and she could only distract them for long enough before their eyes sought younger prey; of course, Cassie’s experience was tainted and she knew it, but life had taught her that the world seldom gave one an easy route through any troubles.
“Is there anything I can fetch you? A brandy perhaps?” He looked distinctly out of sorts, no matter what he might say. His landing had not been the most graceful, not the soup without heat, but Cassie would have thought both sores would be soothing themselves already and yet there was a tension to his features that concerned her. Diverting her eyes uncomfortably she caught sight of the cane that had fallen to the ground unnoticed, toppling in the jostle and she began to put the picture together.
Without comment she crouched to prop it back up and kept her gaze averted. “I think a brandy may help,” she offered kindly.

"It is really quite unnecessary," Aldous protested firmly. The longer she remained, the more likely the Dutchman was to be made aware of the whole ordeal—a headache that the wizard was quite certain he did not need. He had already failed in his efforts to escape the lunch unscathed; Aldous did not fancy further wounding his pride.
“Your employers needn’t worry, if that is your concern,” he added pragmatically.
