Sisse Thompsett’s second attempt the apple did shrink, not perfectly and all at once as it should have, but in sections that finally bubbled together in a smaller apple. “A bit more practice this evening, Miss Thompsett, I think. But for now, try engorio.

While Sybille Lukeson's wand had lit up with little problem it appeared to remain lit even after her incantation. “Again Miss Lukeson, Mr. Belby.” He instructed, noting that Archer Belby’s wand also remained lit up despite his efforts otherwise - at least this time it didn’t look like he was trying to blow something up.

Fleur Rey's second attempt did not produce smoke nor did it produce light. “Concentrate Miss Rey, they don’t always look like extinguished candles.” He encouraged her.

Well done Miss Wood.” Ellsworth grinned at the first year as Arabella Wood's wand extinguished. “Five points to Hufflepuff for being the first to complete the task.” He announced to the classroom.

The apple sitting in front of Orinda Ruskin shrunk perfectly down to size. “Well done, Miss Ruskin. Try engorio now.” He instructed cheerfully.

Cele was excited to learn the Charm that would make it easier to see in the dark. 'Lumos!' she said excitedly as she gave the wand a flick and waited for the tip to brighten.

Celeste has an accents that's a blend of French and English.

The apple actually shrunk, but even she could tell it wasn’t supposed to shrink that way. At least Professor Ruskin was allowing her to move on. She hated to think how much smaller the apple would have gotten if he had her try again. Once again she focused on the apple, but this time she frowned as she cast, “Engorgio.

She didn’t have as much success the second time for her wand remained stubbornly lit. Handy, but not what she had been hoping for. She tried again. “Nox.” She tried to state it more confidently this time.

Angharad had gotten a paper which said where she was supposed to go every day, but it she probably wouldn't have gone here (or to any of the other places on the paper) if it hadn't been for the old hen that had seen her and some other lassie she wasn't even talking to in the hall and herded them into a room big room with lots of other folk, talking funny about them almost being late. She sat down with an unhappy huff and glared toward the front of the room at some ancient chail (way more ancient than hers).

He talked funny too, like everyone here, but she knew what he was saying, something about saying some words and moving their wands to make fire, then put it out. She knew right away, she wasn't going to do it. It sounded good. She could use it, but she would try it later, not here. She didn't want to be here. That bloody hen shouldn't have made her come in. After they did it, they would just have to write about it and it wouldn't matter for the school. Instead, she just sat there with her arms crossed, glaring at the old chail as he moved around, watching other people do the spell and listening to the other people's words so she could try it later.

Fleur pursed her lips, similar to the way she would when she concentrated on her baking. This time, she seemed to forget about trying to impress Professor Ruskin and truly concentrate on the spell. She flicked her wand and firmly chanted, "Lumos."

Carding fingers through his hair, he let out a small sigh and gave Professor Ruskin a serious nod. Try again. At least he hadn't nearly blinded everyone. Archer straightened up in his chair and tried to cast the spell a second time. "Nox." He sounded somewhat more confident. Well, as confident as he could sound.

She'd happily fetched her apple at the start of class, before flipping back into her desk that she had claimed beside Sissie. She was pleased to be settling back into the routine of school and even more content to be able to use magic again. Oh, Calla simply couldn't wait until she turned seventeen and could use magic everywhere but around muggles.

"Reducio!" she'd call, mimicking the move the professor had made with her wand that was pointed at the apple.

The second years continued on with little success. Sisse Thompsett's apple remaining small and Calla Potts’s remaining stubbornly the same size nearby. “Try again ladies.” He called cheerfully to them.

Céleste Bénet, one of the twins in his class he noted, waved her wand too much. The tip lite up brightly before flickering several more times before holding a solid light. “Perhaps only a gentle flick Miss Bénet next time. For now, please try nox.

Nearby Sybille Lukeson’s wand extinguished. “Well done, Miss Lukeson. Keep practicing both.” Beside her Fleur Rey was still having no success. “Try again.” Ellsworth told her as he passed her seat.

The initial success that @"Archer Belby "had demonstrated seemed stunted as his wand also remained lit. “Again Mr. Belby. Don’t forget to enunciate.

Only one first year did nothing, instead Angharad Warbeck sat obstinately with her arms folded glaring at him. Not a first, but unusual on the first day with a first year. They were more often than not excited to finally try magic. “Miss Warbeck,” Ellsworth began gently coming to stand in front of her desk. “Is there a reason you have not begun your task?

Her apple shrunk and Orinda all but fell out of her seat. Reducio worked? It worked? It worked!! She would have to tell Acacia later. Maybe even Crysanta if she could catch her. But now she had to return the apple to its correct size. For a moment she felt a moment of panic that it would explode and she'd have to start all over. But, why not? It wasn't like everyone else wasn't trying at the same time she was.

Mimicking her grandfather, Orinda moved her wand carefully and mouthed the word Engorgio before speaking aloud firmly and properly. "Engorgio!

The apple stayed in its small shape. Luckily, with a quick glance at the other second years she noted that everyone else seemed to be struggling too. Sisse looked at the apple, “Engorio.” She commanded firmly.

The pretty light remained despite her command. Sybille’s eyebrows furrowed. The Professor hadn’t made this seem as if it would be an impossible task. She could do this, she reassured herself. “Nox."

The old chail got closer and closer to her but she just kept glaring. By the time he got to her, she was clearing so hard, she wasn't even listening to the spells anymore. Instead, she inspected the chail's face. He looked older and older the closer he got. His hair was white, and his skin looked like a shriveled up fruit that wasn't good to eat anymore. She didn't know why the school would even get teachers like that when they were probably going to die soon. She would probably be there longer than him, even, so she definitely didn't have to listen to him.

After awhile, he was so close to her that he spotted her glare and looks at her, not cross, but the same way that the nanny and the chail looked at her when she was cross and they weren't. She hated that way of looking, and it only made her glare harder. His face didn't change even as he walked over and talked to her using the name from the letter asking why she wasn't doing her talk, which she was sure was like job. "Fur ah dinnae bloody weel wantae." she bit back, looking him straight in the eyes. He couldn't tell her what was hers or what to do. He wasn't her boss. He wasn't even her chail. "Th' spell is glaikit 'n' tis nae even mines. Ye'r th' yin wha wants me tae dae it. Ah kin practice it oan mah ain if a'm waantin'."

She'd done it—and on her first try! She would have to write to Mama immediately after her lesson. Flora could just imagine her mother seated in the parlor, pride radiating from her features as she read of her daughter's success. Before that could happen, though, she needed to ensure there would not be anything bad to write home about. Holding her wand out once more, Flora took a deep breath and carefully cast: "Nox."

If failing at her own attempt wasn't bad enough, Holly had to watch the half-human ratbug succeed in her efforts. In Holly's opinion (which was obviously the only valid one), Miss Ruskin has no mind to even be at Hogwarts this school year! With shifting eyes and a frustrated huff, Holly pointed her wand at her new apple—but, just as she cast her spell, allowed her wand 'slip' in the direction of the Ravenclaw.

Archer pursed his lips, disappointed that his wand continued to remain lit, despite his efforts. It probably didn't help that he felt like everyone was watching him, even if most of them were working quite diligently to complete their own spells. Taking Professor Ruskin's advice, Archer tried once more and tried to enunciate the spell as clearly as he could, "Nox."
