((Translations for Angahrad's speech are included in italics next to her dialogue because it can get pretty indecipherable at times.))

There was something not right about this school. Angharad had known already even before she'd gotten her letter, but she knew it even more now. She hadn't liked the train business going there. It had moved too fast and too bumpy for anything. Even a dragon would be a better ride, she reckoned. Then the boats were too slow and it was all too squeezed together everywhere and everyone blethering to each other. They all had too move around here and there like a lot of sheep, then, when it was so squeezed together she hardly thought there could be anyone left in the world, the opened the doors and herded them in to a room with more people! The robes were scratchy, and the ceiling wasn't right-like sky but without the reek of outdoors, then they brought out a glaikit singing hat that was meant to tell them where to go live! Scratching at her arm through the sleeve of the horrible robes, she threw a scowl at the excited smiling face nearest her, then an even dirtier one at the old man up at the front of the room as he called out her name. She stayed put and kept glaring. He said her name again after a bit and a nudge from some lady that was probably going to give some of the lessons sent her stomping up to the hat with a growl. With a plop, she sat down on the stool and had the hat pulled down over her ears. Then, it started talking in her head.

Which house would you like to be in and why?
Her eyes opened wide for a second at the sound of the voice in her head, then went back to glaring as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Whit shoods Ah teel ye fur?" (What should I tell you for?) she snapped angrily "Yoo're jist a glaikit hat. It's nane ay yer business. Ah dinnae even ken thaim." (You're just a stupid hat. I don't even know whem.) It wasn't right, and she didn't like it she only saw this house, and she wasn't going to pick some other one without seeing it. The hat had sung about them, and she thought the brave one sounded better than the others, but she still didn't know how a house could be brave. Did it talk like the hat? If it did, she would rather sleep in the forest, especially if it sang. But, she didn't say that, and it just kept asking questions.

You catch a fellow student copying your friend's homework in their absence, how do you deal with this situation?
"In their whit?" (In their what?)she asked crumpling her eyebrows together at the funny word, abscent. But, it didn't matter. She could answer, so she did. "It's still nane ay yer business, but if they're thievin' mah friends wark, eh'd batter 'em. It's nae reit, thievin'." (It's still none of your business, but if they're stealing my friend's work, I would punch them. It's not right, stealing.) She knew that well enough. The whole reason she was here was because if some thieving, glaikit dragon all that time ago, and she'd been told plenty of times, even when she'd just used things, which wasn't really thieving. Real, thieving, she would never do, and she wouldn't let someone do it to Aulay either, even if his homework was just dead mice. She'd answered, but the hat just kept asking, and the next one was weird too.

Centaur, unicorn, kelpie, or abraxan?
She didn't even bother to tell it off anymore since it didn't listen, but she did grumble Kelpie. A've got nae a scooby whit th' rest ur. (Kelpie. I've got no idea what the other ones are.) which was a lie. She knew what unicorns were, but she didn't like them, not even to mention. She wasn't some priss. The hat felt funny, and she shifted around in her seat, trying to stop herself from taking it off. If she was going to come up and answer questions for some hat. She might as well answer them all.

What would you like to do once you leave Hogwarts?
It just kept going, and she wasn't sure how to answer for a second before spouting out the only thing that came into her mind. "Hunting oan mah ain wi' Aulay." (Hunting on my own with Aulay.) She wasn't sure where, but, if she was grown enough for school, she would be grown enough for that when she left. She could sleep under a rock if she had to, but hunting and trapping all day would be worth it, and she could live on what she trapped no matter what other folk said. She did before. She would have to think about it more soon, but not now, because the next question came too quick, and it wasn't easy to understand either.

Your close friend is miserable, what do you do about it?
She stopped to think again, her eyebrows squeezed together in confused annoyance. "Miserable's lik' dowie, richt...? " (Miserable's like sad, right?) she asked at last. "A dinnae ken. Wur it th' body fae afore that wis thievin' making thaim dowie? They'll likelie cop better if ah git back at th' theif fur thaim." (I don't know. Was it the person from before that was stealing making them sad? They'll probably feel better if I get back at the theif for them.) She would feel better then, but she wouldn't let anyone else take care of a theif for her. She would take care of him herself. It didn't really matter anyway. Her only friend was Aulay, and he was an owl, so he didn't really feel sad and he didn't do homework, so nobody could copy it.

What do you consider to be your best trait?
This time she just sighed "Whit's a trait? How come dae ye blether sae funny anyhow? Whit's wrong wi' ye?" (What's a trait? Why do you talk so funny anyhow? What's wrong with you?) probably that it was a talking hat, but that wasn't all of it. Everyone here talked funny. Whatever best the hat was talking about, it wouldn't be this.

It was finally time. She'd entered the Great Hall and stared at the architecture and the art that abounded in the massive castle. It was time for her to be Sorted and when her name was called, she anxiously walked up, glancing around for her friends. Flora had been Sorted into Slytherin, something she'd not expected, but when Claire was Sorted into Gryffindor, she cheered with the rest of the House Claire'd be with.

Which house would you like to be in and why?
Oh this was a hard one. She'd assumed she would be in the same House as Flora but she knew intrinsically that she wouldn't be Slytherin material. She was too timid, Flora was not. Claire was her second bet to be with and Gryffindor was just as outlandish for her, even with her failed attempt at an adventure with her friend and her behaviors with her ghostly uncle. Well... Ravenclaw? Hufflepuff? Thinking hard, she mentally shrugged her head. 'I don't know.' she thought miserably.

"I see, hrmm."

You catch a fellow student copying your friend's homework in their absence, how do you deal with this situation?
Well, if it was Claire's homework, Arabella thought fondly, the newest Gryffindor would simply sock the guy in the face and get her homework back. Flora would shame them into giving it back. But what would she do? She would have to go to the nearest prefect or professor. They would be able to handle it a lot better than she would.

"Very enlightening…"

Centaur, unicorn, kelpie, or abraxan?
Unicorn. The one thing she knew without a doubt. She still loved her children's books about dancing unicorns being best friends with dragons.

"Hahaha, I thought as much."

What would you like to do once you leave Hogwarts?
Arabella imagined she would have to get married when she left Hogwarts. She would like to be a professor or something like that, but upper class young women were almost always debutantes and got married.

"Ahh."

Your close friend is miserable, what do you do about it?
This was something she could answer quite easily. She would do everything within her power to make them feel better. Flora, she'd find a bouquet of flowers and Claire, she'd introduce to a new ghost. Maybe find a way to get something exciting to play with.

"Now that is quite telling!"

What do you consider to be your best trait?
Loyalty. Trust in others above all else. Intelligence. What else could there be?

"Interesting, I'm not sure that would have been my choice but there you have it."

It appeared that the questions were over. She would have to wait for her decision from the Hat.

This was it. The moment he had been waiting for all summer. He was sure his brother was watching him and he definetly didn't want to disappoint his brother on being  sorted in hufflepuff - not that he had anything against them personally, but he was sure everyone bet that he was getting sorted to any house but that.

Quote:Which house would you like to be in and why?

"Slytherin or maybe Ravenclaw." Slytherin was the house of the great and ambitious. He definitely saw himself as someone succesful the future even if he was the second born. It was also the house majority of his family - Grandma, Uncle Caspar and Elijah (and probably one of his parents). He definitely didn't want to be left out. Ravenclaw might not be bad as well, he didn't know if he was intelligent enough though. Was he brave enough for gyffindor? Nope. Hufflepuff didn't seem to fit him well too.

Quote:You catch a fellow student copying your friend's homework in their absence, how do you deal with this situation?

Why would a friend of his even leave their homework out in the open? If it was him, he wouldn't have left his parchment for others to see."Scold them but if they continue, I'll let them be." He wasn't going to waste his precious time on a cheater. If he gets caught by his friend or a professor, serves them right. If the student was smart, they would have listened to him or even avoid copying someone else's homework to begin with.

Quote:Centaur, unicorn, kelpie, or abraxan?

"Uhh.. Abraxans" they were the most majestic out of four creatures, even if he was too old to ride them.

Quote:What would you like to do once you leave Hogwarts?

Did he really have to think of it right now? He was far too young to worry about it. He thought of it for a moment.
"I'll work for the ministry of magic, perhaps I'll become an Auror or Unspeakable or maybe healing. I still don't know what I'm good at." Hogwarts was there to make him realize what his real interest are and hopefully by the time he graduates, he had some sort of plan for his future.

Quote:Your close friend is miserable, what do you do about it?

Chocolates usually cheer him up when he wasn't in a good mood. "Give them sweets and comfort them. I'll give them advice when asked, if not I'll just listen to them."  Weep. even if it sounded tedious but they were his friends and he was sure if he were in the friend's position they would have done the same.

Quote:What do you consider to be your best trait?
This was a question that should be asked to those closes to him, not him. This was by far the hardest question the old leather hat had asked. "I’m friendly? Gabe answered hesitantly after seconds. He hoped his answer wasn't wrong.

After a few seconds comes the cry of, "Hufflepuff!"

Gabriel Urquart
Once again the hat seems to take a little longer than usual deciding.

Quote:How far would you go to fulfill your deepest desire?

N.B. If your character lacks the knowledge or willingness to answer the questions IC, please remember the point of the exercise is to provide me with information to make up for my not being a telepathic hat and is more important that being 100% faithful to their IC behavior. Essentially these questions aren't really being asked IC at all as the sorting hat doesn't need to ask questions it reads minds.

#22
She thought the questions might be over for a moment, then she heard another one in her head.

What do you value the most?
Aulay was the first thing that popped through her head, but then, she wasn't really sure. Doing what she wanted was important too, and it would be important when he died, so maybe it was more important. She wasn't sure. What was most important now was that the hat would just make up its mind, then shut its bloody trap.

((Oh, and some that author's note was probably for me (sorry), she would consider her best trait her resourcefulness and she would probably comfort a friend by doing something for him/her or giving him/her something that she considers valuable, as for the house, if she knew which houses were which, she would probably prefer gryffindor just because she likes the sound of bravery.))

Quote:How far would you go to fulfill your deepest desire?

Just as Gabe thought the hat was supposed to announce his house, it asked another question. How far would he go?  "I guess as long as my abilities and resources can grant it." He answered plainly. He wouldn't go far as too hurt others to attain his goals but a lot of effort would be put in to his desires, whatever that was.

Winston was nervous about this. He still felt as if this had all been some tremendous mistake, and so when the hat was lowered over his head, he was wondering, even though he had seen everyone else get sorted, if it was suddenly going to be Just a Hat. Aunt Elinor would want him to be brave, though, and maybe so would his dead uncle, so he steeled his shoulders.

"Which house would you like to be in and why?"

I don't - I don't know what that means, Winston thought in a panic, up at the hat. I'm not from here, I don't know the houses. I like blue. And red. Really any color is alright. I don't know.

Luckily, the next question was a little bit easier.

"You catch a fellow student copying your friend's homework in their absence, how do you deal with this situation?"

Winston blew a breath out he had not been aware he was holding. Well, I'd tell my friend, Winston thought, It's not my paper, right? So if they're upset, I'd be upset, but if they're not upset - well, that's on them. But I'd have to tell my friend. Right away, obviously.

"Centaur, unicorn, kelpie, or abraxan?"

What the devil is an abraxan? I think Mama told me a stories about kelpies once. Don't they drown people? In lakes? I guess that's neat. Unicorns are girly, and centaurs - I don't know, something about a man-chest is really uncomfortable. So. Kelpie it is.

"What would you like to do once you leave Hogwarts?"

My uncle was an aurrrror. Winston thought, drawling out the still-unfamiliar word awkwardly even in his mind. And he died. But I still think I'd like to try and be one. He didn't really believe he had the capability, still, maybe he would be bad at magic - but he wanted to try.

"Your close friend is miserable, what do you do about it?"
This was not so bad if he got over the fact that it was a hat.
Once my sister Anna was sad about math so I tried to cheer her up by complaining about math, which she didn't think was funny, but then my math book appeared in a puddle and we both thought that was pretty funny. So. Make them laugh.

"What do you consider to be your best trait?"

Winston frowned, and thought, I've been told I'm entertaining.

#26
Though there had been plenty of excited chatter around her Annie had fallen quite silent since the train had pulled into the station, watching everything with wide eyes.  From the boats to the castle (which was so much bigger than she’d imagined!) to the great hall with the impossible ceiling, it was a lot to take in.  When her name was called she almost didn’t register it was her turn, somehow expecting the hat to call her Annie.

Which house would you like to be in and why?

'Hufflepuff' she decided after a moment, wondering if it was really so simple as picking.  Her mom was a Hufflepuff plus going by the hat’s song the other houses seemed to be looking for things she wasn’t sure she could be all the time like daring or cunning.

You catch a fellow student copying your friend's homework in their absence, how do you deal with this situation?

'I’d tell my friend!' she thought resolutely. 'And maybe ask the person what they are doing first.' If they were sneaking it then just asking might get them to stop or maybe there were other factors Annie didn’t know about like what if her friend was letting them copy?  Either way it would be up to her friend to decide what to do about it.

Centaur, unicorn, kelpie, or abraxan?

'Abraxan!  Because they can fly!'  That was the easiest question so far.  Just the thought of the flying horses made her happy.

What would you like to do once you leave Hogwarts?

'Well er… be a healer?'  It was the first time she’d actually said as much, in so many words.  Even if it was just inside her head to a hat.  Until a few months ago she wasn't even sure she was a witch and now saying she wanted to be a healer felt a little like she was asking too much.  And saying it was scary because that made it real instead of just a thought in her head and that much more of a disappointment if it didn't happen.  Even though it was a new dream she clung to it fiercely and knew deep down she’d put everything she had into it.

Your close friend is miserable, what do you do about it?

'Try to help them with whatever is making them miserable.  And if I can’t help then I’d make them some tea and give them a hug. And after that everyone is a little different - maybe they want to be left alone or maybe they want company - whatever they want'

What do you consider to be your best trait?

She wrinkled her nose under the hat's brim.  What a strange question!  She squirmed internally, trying to think of things she was proud of or things people had praised her for and like… yeah she tried to be a nice person and yeah she wasn’t afraid of hard work but really what she was most excited about was… she was a witch.

After years of being unsure and curbing thoughts of the future - now she knew and now she could look ahead to things she could be and learn and do.

Faye stood nervously along with the other gaggle of first years and tried to crane over the crowd to spot her brother or sister amoung the sea of heads in the great hall - it wasn't easy and she failed on both accounts. But it served to distract her to from the names being called and the judgement being pronounced on other first years. Eventually she heard her name, or rather she heard the second time her name was called and someone else elbowed her in the ribs.

Faye took the few short steps up onto the platform where the sorting hat stool stood. She sat down and the hat was dropped onto her head.

"I see, hrmm."

Quote:You catch a fellow student copying your friend's homework in their absence, how do you deal with this situation?
I wouldn't let them copy, but after the class I would offer to study with them if they wanted some help.

"Very enlightening…"

Quote:Centaur, unicorn, kelpie, or abraxan?
Abraxan! They are so interesting looking!

"Hahaha, I thought as much."

Quote:What would you like to do once you leave Hogwarts?
I dont really know yet, perhaps something with magical animals and finding out more about them.

"Ahh."

Quote:Your close friend is miserable, what do you do about it?
I would try and find out whats wrong. Im not sure what I could do about it, depending on the issue, but I would certainly try and if I couldn't I would tell a teacher, or someone who might be able to fix it.

"Now that is quite telling!"

Quote:What do you consider to be your best trait?
Well I think I'm sort of smart and I can read REALLY well, there wasnt much else to do at my uncles after my siblings left, and I like odd animals.

"Interesting, I'm not sure that would have been my choice but there you have it."

The hat takes a little longer than usual to ponder between the houses but finally resolves upon "Hufflepuff!"

The Sorting Hat seems to be deeply perplexed, at least that's what must be inferred by the rest of the Great Hall who can only tell that it is taking its time on this one.

Annie squirmed in her chair as the hat deliberated, wondering if anyone else had taken this long and if maybe she'd answered wrong.  She held her breath as the next question came

Who inspires you and why?
"My mum!" she thought after a small pause, releasing the breath she'd been holding. "She's poised and beautiful but skilled and knowlegeable.  She knows what to do even when things go bad.  She's a healer. Oh! and my uncle because when times were hard he changed his whole life to come help us."
