Was he really trying to tell Nat jokes about marriage? Bad marriage? Though, what was good marriage anyhow? What did he even know about it? He knew what love was, certainly. His family liked to say he fancied himself in love with a new girl every week — untrue! Still, he held the belief that a marriage should be based off of love - or at the very least - friendship. It wasn't the 1860s anymore. People should marry for reasons that weren't financial or political.
