Emmeline allowed herself to be pulled into his arms but it did little by way of slowing the sobs that shook her entire body. There would surely be a wet spot on his shirt from her years afterwards but that was the furthest thought from her mind in that moment. All she wanted was to understand why.

"Why Charlie?" she asked simply, "Why do you hold back So much but expect the opposite from me?" It wasn't fair and perhaps that was the biggest issue. She'd been nothing but honest with him. She'd told him everything he'd asked despite the fears of him not liking it. And though he may not outright lie to her, withholding truths was nearly as bad.
