May 11th, 1888 - Empty Classroom, Hogwarts

Once the boggart had been taken care of, Emmeline had turned to Miss Browne and asked if she'd like some extra help when it came to DADA. It wasn't that she thought the girl wasn't talented but quite the opposite. It had been a scary situation but one that had been handled quite well and Emmeline wanted to help the girl. Once she'd accepted and they'd calmed down some from the incident, they'd gone in search of an empty classroom, Emmy's own plans of working on some potion work quickly dismissed. If Emmeline was going to get Head Girl, she needed to show she cared about her peers and help them to succeed and not just worry about her own classes.

"So first," she started once they'd found a room and she'd turned to face the younger girl, "Do you know why I asked Edgar to step away from you?"

"You'd said to confuse it," She furrowed her brow thoughtfully, though didn't fully understand the reason behind it. It had all seemed like a blur to her at the time. It would be good to unpack it all and sharpen her skills with Miss Woodcroft. With quidditch seeming to not pan out, she would need to have a plan b in place for her employment. Hopefully becoming an auror or some such was attainable. Miss Connolly had done it, surely Pru could as well.

Emmeline nodded. At least the younger girl had retained that much of what she'd said but it didn't look as though she understood why. "But do you understand why it would confuse it?" she asked, looking at Miss Browne with a slightly raised eyebrow. She couldn't be of any help if she didn't make sure the other girl understood all of it down to the very letter.

“Not really,” She admitted sheepishly. She really ought to have paid better attention, especially with the way the quidditch season had ended. Handsome may have been right, she may have started her quidditch career too late. A losing first season wasn’t very promising if she wanted to get on the Holyhead Harpies after Hogwarts.

Emmeline nodded. She'd thought as much but knew it could be the perfect sort of teaching moment. Hopefully the younger girl would be able to retain the impromptu lesson should she ever run into a boggart again. "Boggarts are mindless creatures," she started, smiling as she went so she hopefully wouldn't sound like a know it all, "They simply feed off fear. But, they can't really discern between two different sets of fears. So when Mr. Rey stepped away from you, it presented a new fear to the boggart. As a result, it couldn't decide which form to take." She paused then and looked to the girl to see if it was all sinking in or not.

"Oh," She breathed, "That makes sense. I wonder why it picked my fear to focus on.. was it just because I was in front at the time we came upon it?" Her fear had been terrifying and she'd need to unpack it all later - but if the other two had gleamed from it what she had, she would be mortified. Prudence Browne's biggest fear was getting married.

Emmeline smiled as she nodded in response to Miss Browne's response. "That's exactly it," she said, "You were the first it saw so it latched onto your fears initially. And until Mr. Rey stepped further away from you, it couldn't differentiate between you both. Emmeline didn't actually see a point in dwelling on the fears in particular. Those would change with time, fears were an always evolving thing after all. "But along with the spell, showing no fear also helps," she said with a nod, "They flounder if there ris no fear though I know that can be exceedingly hard in the moment. You did well though."

"Thank you," She smiled, then shivered as she pictured the creature again, "It sure was creepy though, wasn't it? I wonder how it got into the castle? You don't think Professor Sleptov set it loose to test us do you? That seems like something he would do." Her eyes brightened at the juiciness of it. Imagine telling her parents about that fun fact!

All Emmeline could really do was shrug in response. There was really no knowing if Professor Sleptov had intentionally unleashed the nasty creatures on the school or if they just somehow found a way in themselves. She figured either was pretty plausible but she was not about to be the start of gossip on that matter. "Who knows," she said, "They like dark nooks to hide in and Hogwarts is certainly full of them so I imagine this is the prime place to live for them."

Pru grimaced, "I hope there aren't anymore of them. I don't think I have it in me to face another one today." She was looking forward to cozying up in her nice warm bed and eating several pieces of fudge while she gossiped with her friends about the events of the day.

Emmeline nodded. She could certainly understand that. No matter how prepared a person was, suddenly being faced with on of their worst fears definitely shook a person. "I think you should be safe for today at the very least," she said with a reassuring smile and a gentle pat on the girl's arm, "Think you're ready to head back to the dorms?" She'd forgo her potions practice and see the girl back to their common rooms.

Pru nodded, relieved that they would be done discussing boggarts for the time being, "Very. Thank you for the extra help, Miss Woodcroft." The pair headed back to the dorms and did not encounter any further boggarts along the way.
