Considering he kept running into his ex-lover whenever he happened to venture into Hogsmeade, Jacques had decided to learn his lesson. Wanting to avoid the other man, he had taken to going to the Leaky Cauldron whenever he wanted to go out for his drink or meal. Which wasn't often considering how much he tended to dislike the company of people that weren't related to him. Especially when he was in the midst of another creative flurry.
As it was, he had forgotten to eat and his cook had already gone home. Well, damn. Deciding that he would procure a meal from the Leaky, he apparated there and made his way into the pub, mentally cursing the cold, snowy night. Settling at a table after he got his drink, he looked around the pub as he waited on his meal.

Jack rarely ventured into the Leaky Cauldron - he preferred the comfort of his own home during the day, and could rarely be found anywhere except a party at night - but he had been doing some shopping in Muggle London - and it was past supper time when he had finished. All that would be waiting for him at home would be whatever his housemaid had set aside for him.
He decided that stew and a drink would warm him up nicely, and approached the bartender, quickly relaying his request, before seeking out a seat near the back, glass of whiskey in hand, eyes scanning for an empty seat. He spotted one near a pale man with dark hair who he thought looked somewhat familiar, and settled in to a seat the next table over.

Jacques wasn't the sort to seek out socialization very often and he hadn't been seeking that now. His eyes had fallen onto a man that had a boyish, pretty face. Doing a double take, he realized that there was something familiar about the mans facial features. Jacques wasn't sure what, exactly. It was bothering him, though. He didn't think the man was a former lover, the guy wasn't precisely his type though there was always that small chance. No, thinking more on it he was pretty sure he had seen the man before though not in his bed. Where, then?
"Excuse me, but have we met before?" Jacques finally asked, french accent obvious in his voice. "You just look so familiar but I can't place you at all." Maybe the guy had just one of those faces. That was a possibility too, he belatedly realized.

When the man he had sat near turned and spoke, Jack could not help alarm that crossed his features. He cursed internally. He knew that face. They'd gone to Beauxbatons together - only when Jack had been Jaqueline. Jack couldn't remember the name of the stranger, but he was certain of the face. He only hoped the stranger did not know his - unlikely, as Jack still had the soft, gentle face he'd had as a child.
Knowing he was flustered but trying to play it cool, Jack responded. "I do not believe I have had the pleasure of your acquaintance yet, sir. My name is Jack Watson." His accent was a heavy French one, and his face was tense.

Having an even more clearer, face to face look at the other man made Jacques absolutely certain that he had seen the other man before. But from where? He couldn't place him at all. It was a niggling, annoying feeling not to be able to grasp a place he might have met the other man before. "Jack Watson," he murmured, the name clicking something together in his mind. "I'm Jacques Michaud. Did you attend Beauxbatons?"
Jacqualine Watson was a name he remembered though he had never really mixed with the females of his school. Even so, it was one he recalled since she had been one of those wealthy girls. Had she had a brother? "Do you have a sister?" That had to be it.

Jack thought his heart might beat out of his chest when Jaques asked if he attended Beauxbatons, and barely managed not to let out a gasp of relief when Jaques went on to ask about a sister. "Ah, yes," he said, nearly stuttering from nerves. "Yes, I was a Beauxbatons student. Jaqueline- Jaqueline was my sister." Jack lingered for a moment on the 'was' in hopes that it would prevent any further inquiries. Switching to French, he continued. "I think perhaps you were a few years ahead of us, yes?"
His stew appeared in front of him, the, but he ignored it in favor of studying Jaques' face. The man looked pale in the dim lighting of the Leaky Cauldron, although he did not seem sick in spirit.

Was? Well, that explained the mans hesitance - the poor girl must have died. Fortunately for Jack, Jac did not tend to care much about his peers so he was not at all curious enough to ask what had happened or any of that. "We attended together? I don't think I remember you. I was a couple of years ahead of Jacqueline, that much I remember." With his late birthday, he had been on the older end of his yearmates.
With his own food arriving, Jacques took it upon himself the join the other man. It had been so long since he had encountered someone that he had gone to school with. "When did you move here? Do you stay in Hogsmeade?"

Jack was relived that Jaques had not pressed the issue of his "sister's" death. "Yes, I would have been a few years behind you. I was never very social. I am not surprised that I failed to make an impression." Smiling wryly, he sipped his whiskey. "I came to London just after Beauxbatons, and have taken up a residence there. I had some shopping to do in London, and I thought a nice meal would warm me."
Jack took a sip of his soup and grinned at the rich taste. "I was right, I think." He took another spoonful of soup before speaking again. "And you? When did you arrive in Britain?" He had not run into a classmate for years, having made a distinct effort to avoid them, but Jaques seemed safe enough and he did so miss France sometimes.

Ah, his mother tongue. It felt like forever since he had heard it. Never mind the fact that he and his nephew spoke it often enough. He listened as Jack spoke, able to see from what he said why they had never crossed paths before.
"My family and I moved to Wales in 1882. And then in 1883, resided in Hogsmeade for a time then eventually moved back to Wales when my brother passed away. I am a bit of a recluse so I suppose it isn't surprising that I've never come across you before." Plus he hadn't been able to stand staying in Hogsmeade where the chance of running into his ex-lover was much more likely.

Jack and Jaques spoke for a while, reminiscing about Beauxbatons and France. They were both vague about their most recent years, he thought, but Jack had no desire to delve into his past beyond the general, anyways. When there was a lull in the conversation he glanced up at the clock on the wall and realized with a start that it was quite late. The part of his stew that he had not finished had grown stone cold and even the dying rays of the sun had long disappeared.
"It seems it has grown very late, Monseiur Jaques!" he remarked, pushing back from the table. "I am afraid I must return home. I hope to see you again."
Both men made their goodbyes and then Jack left, making his way into Diagon Alley so that he could apparate away.
