February 11th, 1888 — A Hogwarts Stairwell

The rumbling in the Ravenclaw’s belly—having missed lunch to study, evidently, did not agree with George Waterford—was quieter only than the rumbling of the stairwell as it slid out from its previous position. The third year sighed, knowing she would now have to change her route to the Great Hall and the meal that awaited her there.

Then it stopped.

Neither landing of the staircase was attached to anything.

She frowned, looking down the length of the stairs and then back up them, not entirely comprehending the fact that it had stopped moving. After a long pause, it clicked in.

Merlin’s beard, she—and anyone else on the stairs in that moment—was stuck!

Not paying attention when one was one the staircases of Hogwarts had never been an especially wise way to go about one's day but Connie had been far too distracted by the book in her hand to keep herself sharp. She had read three different books about magical theory, largely ones that were aimed at beginners, and having mastered the lexicon she had tried to read Mr Waffling's efforts again and this time she actually felt she understood it.

Which was a small and exceptionally briefly felt triumph that was very quickly replaced by confusion when she realised that the person in front of her had come to a halt and the staircase, which she had felt tremor into movement a moment ago, had stopped a great deal quicker than it ought to. Looking up then down she spotted the problem but had no immediate revelation as to the solution.

"I suspect we may have to wait for our supper, Mr Waterford," she sighed. "As nobody appears to be coming to our rescue," she added, peering carefully over the edge to see if anybody below was in a similar predicament.

Ever since Sisse had discovered that so few of the first and second years went to supper late she had made a point of attending supper when the Great Hall was still brimming with individuals. While she hadn’t minded the quiet of that evening there was certainly something to be said about eating amongst friends instead of by oneself. This evening she had gotten caught up trying to suffer her way through her magical theory homework (again!) and had told Sloane and the others that she would meet them as soon as she finished her paragraph. That last paragraph had certainly been written hastily and she had quickly dumped her schoolwork on her bed before making her way downstairs eager to finally spend time with friends instead of schoolwork.

She had had to remind herself to slow and act more like a proper young lady when she reached the stairs instead of the deserted corridors of the upper levels of the school where the Gryffindor rooms were located. She had been in the middle of making her way down the way in a manner she hoped was grateful when the staircase began to move. She paled. She was terribly horrible at figuring out how to get places when the staircases moved. Sisse looked behind her relaxing slightly when she noticed two others on the stairs with her. She could just follow them.

The thought froze in her mind as the staircase stopped moving. It simply stopped moving. There were no stairs connected at all and instead it appeared that the stairs themselves had decided they’d had enough of transporting students and teachers wherever they desired when the stair simply had no say. Sisse now turned to the other two behind her, recognizing the Matron of Slytherin house and a boy whom she only knew as a face in a crowd. “Does this happen often?” She asked the older woman, assured her elder would know just what was going on. She was proud that her voice did not in the least way seem timid or afraid of their current predicament.

That the matron of a different house knew her by name was enough to startle George, though fortunately, the Ravenclaw realized, this would likely register only as part of her general confusion about the situation. The pair were not alone, either—a young Gryffindor seemed just as surprised as her companions about the turn of events.

“It’s never happened to me before,” George answered, though the question had been directed at the matron. “Though I have heard of it happening before—I just thought it was stories!”

Despite having clocked up twice as many years at Hogwarts as either of the students she was currently trapped with Connie had only ever been in the same situation once before and her memory of it was distinctly far-off. She hadn't been called upon to solve the problem, nor had she paid a great deal of attention, being far too pleased to be late for her fourth year History of Magic exam along with the majority of her class, and eventually the problem had sorted itself out.

She could only hope it did the same again as she had no idea where to even begin.

"There's no need to worry. The staircases have minds of their own and I'm quite sure they'll have a mind to sort themselves out in due course."

The boy confirmed what Sisse had been thinking. Her parents and even Matthew, who did so love to make her nervous or tease her, had not mentioned anything of the sort. She nodded in acknowledgement with a smile on her lips, about to say she hadn’t even heard of it when the matron added that the staircases had a mind of their own. It was certainly a well acknowledged fact that they did, Sisse rather preferred staircases without trick stairs of moving parts, but where were the adventures in those? But what she was more concerned about was how long it would take the staircase to decide to continue in its path. She said as much, “Do you think it will be a long time before it sorts itself out?” Sisse’s stomach grumbled loudly as if to punctuate her question.

George would not admit as much aloud, but she was rather relieved that Miss Sykes was with them—and so calm. Her reference point for mature women was her rather frantic mother, and so the Ravenclaw had anticipated having to keep both females steady.

As if to echo the Gryffindor, George’s own stomach grumbled, too, as the third year looked almost pleadingly at the one adult in their midst.

Being an appropriately behaved adult in situations she had some handle on was easy enough but with two sets of eyes looking up at her Connie felt distinctly aggrieved by the castle on a whole. Left to her own devices she could have simply sat with her book and waited for the stairs to realign themselves but instead she had two children to contend with, both of whom were probably getting hungry given their intended destination.

"I'm sure it won't take long," she said, trying to reassure herself as much as them and emphatically meeting the older student's eye in the hope that he would be sensible enough not to panic the young girl with his own worries. "In the worst case the elves will be able to bring us sustenance," she quipped dryly with a small smile when she heard the telling rumbles.

The Matron's response was not really what Sisse had wanted to hear. Was there really nothing that could be done other than to wait? Then again it really wasn't her place to argue with her elders, no, she knew better than that. Her small lips pursed in a frown she didn't push the thoughts lingering in her mind.

Sisse was still surprised by the presence of house elves at Hogwarts and as such didn't manage to keep her curiosity reigned in though - especially as she couldn't very well complain about their current predicament. She did have to seem like a big girl after all. "Could they really get food to us here?"

“House elves can go wherever they like,” George piped in helpfully, “and they do live to serve. If Madam Sykes thinks they can do it, I’m inclined to believe her.”

The immediate rumbling of the Ravenclaw’s stomach punctuated that it might be wishful thinking on George’s part.

Mr Waterford was right on both counts but Connie felt a rumble of unease at the thought of how long they might be here. She ought to do something really, but what? She had no knowledge of the charms that made the staircases move and even if she did she doubted her skill would be sufficient to do anything to control the ancient magic.

It really was terribly inconvenient of the founders to have been quite so proficient.

"Well, lets at least make ourselves a little more comfortable shall we?" She said cheerily, pulling her wand from her pocket as she contemplated whether such thing as a chair would even fit. Blankets might be useful? Or she could just summon the house elves and have done with her own attempts? Throughout her contemplations she tapped her wand on the stone, finding a rhythm that helped her think until, moving so suddenly she nearly dropped her wand entirely, the staircase began to move again, shifting back towards where it had come from.

At the boy’s explanation Sisse nodded in agreement. It sounded quite reasonable to her. Perhaps they might have dinner here. Madame Sykes appeared ready for action, it seemed as if she knew that they might be here for a while and Sisse found herself smiling slightly. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. The older woman had pulled out her wand and began tapping it on the stairwell, apparently she had found the right spell for the staircase began to move again. Sisse grinned, perhaps dinner wouldn’t be so far off now.

Thank you Madame Sykes!” She chirped as the stairs settled back into place. “Shall we head to supper?” She inquired politely of her companions so that she needn’t worry about them all headed the same way and not speaking.

The rest of the trip passed without incident and Sisse was quite grateful for her supper than evening when she finally made it to the Gryffindor table and her meat pie.

George lost her footing and fell into the railing as the stairwell jerked to life once more. Whether the matron had magicked it to be so or they had just tired of being petulant, the Ravenclaw did not know, but George was not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

"Please," the third year agreed emphatically after righting herself. As if to agree, her stomach rumbled loudly once more.
