February 12th, 1895 - Cupid's Arrow Ball
Eugene wasn't so sure how he kept getting harangued into attending events like this, but his friends had cajoled him into coming with them at least for the entertainment value. St. Valentine's was always a bit of a tough reminder of his past. Astrild had show up with Theseus this month five years ago and while he wouldn't change having his son for anything, Eugene recognized February as the month where his entire life had changed. Maybe it was a good thing he'd been dragged out after all that way he couldn't sit home by himself and ruminate on it. It was easier to feel less lonely if he was surrounded by people.
The decor was a little garish, but so far the evening hadn't been too bad. He was leery about the strange little cupids that seemed to fire off arrows every once in a while, but nothing afterward seemed too bad. Maybe they were just meant to get people to dance together. He supposed that wasn't a bad thing; might spark something that may have otherwise not happened. So far he'd successfully dodged the one attempt he'd noticed, but other's hadn't. He also suspected some of the ladies may have been allowing themselves the invitation, so that something happened. As long as nothing scandalous happened, he would be fine; he'd had enough scandal for a lifetime.
He'd taken exactly two turns on the dance floor which was two more than he'd been able to take at this time last year. His hip ached a little though, so he decided to take a breather and grab a drink. As Eugene headed toward the refreshments, he felt something grab him and hold him in place. Two tiny cherubs were holding him still and he felt the quick sting in his shoulder as he looked up and locked eyes with someone nearby.
