The Midwives of Mandragora Abbey

They used to be called Herbwitches. Nestled in the Scottish Lowlands, The Midwives of Mandragora Abbey are a magical order of midwives which comprise of both humans and elves. While they are not a religious order, they are unusual in that they serve both the magical community as well as the muggle community, taking great care and diligence to guard the secret of the magical community from the muggles they serve. Back in the day and used to only cover their small community; however with the expansion of the abbey, and in 1877 with the exposure of the magical community, they adjusted accordingly. While the house elves certainly do not mingle with the muggle patients, they are no less dedicated to the art of midwifery and are skilled in muggle healing. The philosophy of the midwives is absolute: good healthcare is a right of all, regardless of species or magical ability. In that, they do their best to turn away no one, however choose to focus on impoverished communities.

All Midwives are expected to able to separate their magical practice from treating muggles. That said, the strict separation of more effective remedies from the ones they are allowed to distribute to muggles may prove difficult to some.

Much like the book at Hogwarts writing names of muggleborns, their records of clients both current and prospective are scribed by a magical quill. Their ledgers are kept meticulously by the Head House Elf, Meadowsweet (Meadow to her colleagues).

The House Elves
All House Elves are likely NPC for now, and named after healing herbs: Meadow (Meadowsweet), Pepper (Peppermint), Camie (Chamomile), Ashie (Ashwagandha), Fevvy (Feverfew), Magnolia (Magnolia officinalis), etc.

The Training
Training at the Abbey requires 1 year nursing/healer experience (or equivalent) and after that is proven/completed, 18 months of midwife training with written and oral examinations whilst working at the clinic at the partnering hospital, aptly named Mandragora Hospital.

The training consists of classes, clinics and field training, wherein the classes are mostly run by the House Elves and senior Midwives, and the clinics are located at various locations around the country through a partnership program. Field training consists of shadowing house calls and even some non-midwifery related cases through the hospital.
