Pick Up the Pieces
#1
June ??, 1894 — Diagon Alley, London

Six wooden jigsaw pieces. They could be anywhere on the street, you realize with trepidation, though the blue glow you were promised should make it easier. Would it be better to join forces with another pair—just for this stage, of course—or are four eyes more desirable than eight?

Pushing her glasses up her nose Chloe squinted down the street for the blue glow. When none was forthcoming she turned to the other girls. "We should split up." She declared with all the confidence of the first born. "Mona and I can take the left side of the street." She suggested, looping her arm through her friend's and smiling at Hester. She knew the other girls, they did, after all, travel in the same set. Besides, Chloe's family was so large she often assumed she was related to most people in her set whether she knew it or not.

There was little more that Mo liked than a challenge! Outside no less and in the Alley. She didn't get to come here very often, so she was thrilled to get the chance. It was a pity she and Stella had been separated but she clung to Chloe tightly, at least having her childhood friend available to her. She had met Miss Frey at the tea party, but still didn't know her well enough to call her a friend. The older girl was unfamiliar to her, but Mo thought that she must already be at Hogwarts.

"There are six to find, if we spread out a little it can't be that hard." She liked Chloe's suggestion and nodded. It wasn't like they were unsupervised or anything and she hoped the people putting this thing together wouldn't be cruel enough to make them go into the alleys off the main strip or anything. The puzzle pieces glowed after all!

Violetta found herself surrounded by a small group of youngsters, all incoming first years, but all cut from similar cloth to her so she didn't feel too out of place. Her acquaintance with them was limited but she knew most of them by family reputation, how could one not know the name Pendergast, I'm fact Violetta had been quote enjoying her stay with the roses whilst her French governess was unwell over the summer.

"An excellent idea, and we shall take the right, this should not take long if we work together, non?" she looked across the road at a pair of young boys who were crawling around the floor chasing for something they had lost and she felt a little shiver up her spine. "Let us hope we are not forced to soil our attire for this game." she grinned and raised her eyebrows. If the young ladies in front of her were in fact the upper classes that their names and countenance suggested, then hopefully they should not be in disagreement.

"I would hate for my dress to get ruined." Chloe admitted, grateful the older girl hadn't fought her on the plan. To be fair, she had worn a dress that was a bit small on her. Mama had said she'd get new dresses before school so Chloe didn't mind particularly if this one were to get messy, but she'd hate for anyone to think less of her if it did.

With a gentle tug on Mona's arm, Chloe gave the other girls a departing smile and called "Good luck!" as they departed from the group.

She kept her eyes on the road as they began to promenade down the side. "Do you see anything?" She asked conversationally.

Mo didn't care much for talk of dresses getting ruined, she wasn't wearing one of her nice ones, in anticipation of being active today. She had never truly cared, nor had her mother ever seemed to either, so it was not of concern at the moment. The household staff probably had plenty of practice getting stains out of the twins' clothes at any rate. They spent most of their days outside in some capacity, if at all possible.

Following along with Chloe, eyes peeled for their blue puzzle pieces, Mo released her friend to check a spot behind some stacked crates. "Not yet, but it can't be all that hard, they glow." Honestly it felt like it was a little too easy with that, but as they had yet to find anything, she supposed it wasn't as helpful as she'd originally thought. "Are you excited for Hogwarts?" Mona couldn't wait; she wanted to get her wand and get to it!

Violetta wandered away from the other girls, taking out her pretty wand and using it almost like a baton to lead the way down their side of the street Hester Frey had been quiet so far.

"Do you have your wand yet Miss Frey?" she asked to make conversation with the other girl, her shoes clicked on the stone streets as the two pairs carried about their task. Her eyes caught something, a faint glow at the back of a large crate of apples. Hands flicked over the produces, carefully selecting the glossiest apple she could find, and then selecting the jigsaw piece. The girl handed over the appropriate coins and turned around with a little spring in her step, she held aloft the glowing treasure before taking a large bite from her fruit.

Hester honestly didn't know what to think as she followed Violetta away from the other girls, the more familiar girls, the girls her age. She was cursing her fortune at being paired with a girl so much older than herself, truth be told, and that was a large reason she had been quiet. She was wishing she had been paired off with someone else — maybe even a boy — as long as her partner was actually her age. But she refused to voice this resentment.

But she couldn't very well ignore a direct question, now, could she? "Mama took me to buy one already," she admitted, "but she keeps it in its box on a high shelf. It's mine...but I can't use it until September." She couldn't even bring herself to be excited over the prospect that they'd found one of their puzzle pieces, suddenly mopey as she was about having something she couldn't use yet.

Sorry I took so long, y'all!

Keeping her face to the road Chloe nodded, "I am. I can't wait to be able to actually do magic. You?"

Across from them Chloe could see the other girls keeping pace with the. Something glowed a soft blue color in the gutter. "Oh! There's one." She pointed to her friend, intending to allow Mona to put her fingers in the gutter for she really had no interest in getting muck on them herself.

She nodded in understanding to Hester Frey . "I remember the feeling mon ami, I used to steal into papa's study to take a peak at Rose de Minuit while I was getting ready to begin school." she got her wand a few weeks before she found out she wasn't going to get to go to beauxbatons and at the time it was the one thing that kept her excitement for school alive.

The pair carried on and Violetta gestured with her head towards the other pair who also seemed to have acquired another of the hidden pieces. From the gutter it seemed. That possibility was not something that Vee enjoyed the idea of, she had no interest of getting her hands filthy. But if needs must. "Hmmm" she said to herself as she scanned the street looking for a glow.

"Same!" Mo thought it was going to be so much more interesting than her lessons thus far. Charms and Transfiguration, practical things they could use in real life. Mo, for all of her flights of fancy, enjoyed the practical in life.

"Oh! Good eye!" She grinned as Chloe mentioned seeing a piece. It was a little in the gutter and now was one of those times magic would be helpful. Fortunately she was not as squeamish or afraid to get a little dirty as her comrades, so she skipped over to where it was half-hidden and pulled it from beneath the crate. She wiped it on the skirt of her old dress and tucked it into her pocket. "How many are there again?" She looked to see if the other pair had found anything, but didn't get much indication one way or another.

Thankfully Mona grabbed the piece without any hesitation and Chloe grinned at her. "Six, I think!" She declared, "I do hope they are all the same color, then we'll know exactly what we're looking for. Should we tell the others?" She glanced around the crowds on the street with bright eyes until she spotted the two other girls keeping pace with them on the other side of the street.

Five to go then, they better get on it! "Oh yes, maybe we should check in to see if they've found any." It would be silly if they were looking and their compatriots had found something. This way they could see if their plan was working too or if they needed to try something else.

Mo waved to Miss Frey and the older girl, whose name she had embarrassingly forgotten to get before they set off. "How are you doing, found any?" She called, hoping maybe they had found one or two themselves.

Violetta saw the young Pendergast girl walking over with a piece in hand. She nodded her blonde head back in confirmation holding up the piece that she and Miss Frey had found. "Oui!"

She looked about on the high street and something just caught her eye, an older lady... "They wouldn't, would they?" This elderly lady, the spitting image of Professor Valenduris if he was a woman, sat calmly feeding the pigeons, and around her neck was a small glowing jigsaw piece.
