General | A child of a mixed-race marriage, Octavian has tan skin and curly dark hair which he keeps trimmed short. He frequently wears a short beard or some degree of stubble. He is tall and lean though not so much of either as to attract attention.
Expressions | Octavian's expressions give the impression generally that he is hapless and haphazard, which he does nothing to address because it means people often underestimate him. He is usually smiling, frequently amused, and sometimes looks confused (though seldom is).
Fashion | Octavian wears well-tailored suits but tends towards simple colors and styles that don't drawn much attention; you'd only know his clothes are expensive if you already knew what to look for in men's clothing. In a similar vein his accessories are high quality, but he tends not to replace them unless absolutely necessary so they can sometimes appear more worn than those of his peers.
Scent | His cologne smells of pine, and he also often smells faintly of pipe tobacco.

History:
Family History Although Octavian didn't know it, his story began with a choice his grandfather made long before he was born. The Howard family was financially doing well, but socially middle class — until the carriage manufacturing business his grandfather owned exploded in popularity, propelling the Howard family into opulent levels of wealth and subsequently into reluctant acceptance into upper class society. That's the story everyone knows...
What people don't know is that there's a reason the carriage business was so suddenly successful, when it had plenty of legitimate competition: Mr. Howard had acquired a stolen artifact which ensured his success, but at a cost. At first he shrugged off the warning that his family would be cursed; even his wife's unexpected death did not make him believe — but the visions he subsequently had of his deceased wife certainly changed his mind. But money can solve a myriad of problems, and after insulating himself with protective charms, the curse was neutralized... for now.1865 — 1877
ChildhoodOctavian joins the family on a chilly autumn day. As a child he wants for nothing, and although he and his siblings engage in their fair share of petty squabbles they are relatively close (which only makes the subsequent split in adulthood all the more jarring for everyone who knows the family well). 1877 — 1884
HogwartsTav is off to Hogwarts and is sorted into Slytherin. He's an excellent student during his school years but also something of a class clown and occasional prankster, which means he is passed over for prefect (not that he minds). He scores well on OWLs and NEWTs and in his final year serves as president of the charms club. The summer after graduation is marred by the Laughing Plague, which his mother eventually succumbs to. Octavian takes some time away from society to grieve and focuses on an apprenticeship with the family business. 1884 — 1887
ApprenticeTav spends a few years working under his father and uncle. He tends to see things in novel ways, and for a while he shares these insights with his family and makes some minor improvements to processes and such at the company, but... then he looks around and realizes that it doesn't really matter what he contributes to the company, because he's destined to be at best his uncle Demetrius in the grand scheme of things; Titus is always going to inherit, even if he's not... particularly good at it, or interested in it. So Octavian starts keeping his ideas to himself. Eventually, in 1887, he takes one of those ideas out to the patent office and then to an outside investor, and the Howard Pocket Carriage is born. A full-sized carriage which shrinks into a pocket-sized version with a flick of a wand, it becomes quite popular for a year or so (before people eventually realize it isn't much more convenient than a usual carriage since the horses do not shrink with it). 1887 — 1893
IndependenceThe pocket carriage is enough to make Octavian independently wealthy, but also enough to make his relationship with his father and brother rather frosty — it's obvious to them that Tav cut them out of the profits of this on purpose, which is seen as a betrayal. Life at home becomes uncomfortable, and Tav moves to his own place in London shortly after that. After moving out he also starts to establish himself more socially, including beginning to think about starting a family of his own.
