Did You Know?
Discovered today that spotted dick is a pudding with raisins in it. But more importantly that "dick" was the victorian word for pudding. — Fallin

August 28, 1892 — Hogsmeade Musicale
Rupert had been hanging with Kristoffer, both with nothing better to do when he remembered the Musicale. His sister Rose and some of her friends were taking part and honestly, no one wanted to hear his sister sing. She insisted she was good at it but Rupert knew her to be delusional about her own skills at the best of times. Her friends weren't much better and as far as he concerned, none of them were even worth looking at. Despite his opinions, he did like his sister most of the time. When she was not trying to be a performer.

His sister and her group were not yet performing, however. Instead it was a plain looking young woman that he did not recognize. She seemed to believe she was singing. "Is she singing the songs of a fwooper?" He said snidely to his best friend as they subjected themselves to this awful performance. Only reason he didn't just up and leave was that his mother had already clocked him and would notice if he left before Rose got on the stage.

Like Rupert, Kristoffer did have debutante sisters of his own to pretend to care about. Also like Rupert, he was bored to tears of sitting here, and yet here they were, stuck listening to some young lady descended from a banshee. “I hope I go deaf in the next three seconds,” he muttered out of the corner of his mouth. Too much to wish for apparently – if anything, just after he said it her screeching seemed to have gotten louder.

The song of a fwooper, indeed. “Oh, that’s it,” Kris said, almost gleeful, as though he’d just had an epiphany. He elbowed Bingham and leant in towards his ear so Rupert would hear him over the din. “It’s her. The murderer going round, who killed Beauregard and the others. She’s driven half of Hogsmeade round the bend until they –” off themselves.

Rupert nodded in agreement before wincing as the alleged singing got louder. How many more of these talentless ladies were they going to have to suffer through? Hopefully their own kin would be bearable. It would be an utter embarrassment if they weren't. It wasn't like Rupert paid much attention to how Rose got on in her lessons.

Rupert tilted towards Kristoffer as the other man spoke. He laughed, finding this very funny despite how insensitive a comment it was when the deaths were so fresh. "I suppose that's what happens when you sing in the same range as fwoopers do."

If only Rupert’s laughter could drown out the background wailing. He could listen to Rupert laughing at his jokes all day.

He nodded, with a grimaced smile to say exactly. “Mmm, and her looks aren’t much consolation,” Kris pointed out, lip curled in distaste. “Don’t you have anything to stuff in our ears? I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”

"If that were the case, at least she would be worth looking at," Rupert said in easy agreement. He chuckled as Kristoffer asked if he had anything to stuff their ears with. "Not in particular. All we can do is hope she doesn't find the range matured mandrakes shriek in." That would be interesting but not if they were one of the ones to drop dead.

It was the comment about the mandrakes that really did it: Kristoffer snorted, more loudly than was polite. Although – surely the rest of the room was suffering through this too, and any other noises were only helping to soften the pain?

Speaking of doing the room a service... Kris thumbed through his inner pocket, fingers curling discreetly around his wand. “What do you think?” he muttered. “Dire enough to call for a silencing charm?” Rupert would have to cover him, else Kris would get thrown out for it – but he would do it.

Rupert just barely hid his laugh as his best friend snorted. A couple of people - parents of one of the girls, likely - gave them an affronted glance. Rupert spared them a look before turning his attention back to Kristoffer.

"I should say so," Rupert said, abuzz with excitement at what Kristoffer likely planned to do. Anything to liven up the day was welcome these days. Being a gentleman of leisure was a great privilege but also rather boring.
