Greta Gillenwater vs. Iphigenia Adebayo
#1
23rd July, 1892 — Headquarters of the London Society for the Practice of Combative Magic
And now for the ladies! Well, girls, really. (He wasn't sure which years they were in, but they both still looked like munchkins to him.)

Still, he was keen to see what spells they had up their sleeves. So, after a quick recital of the rules, Tyb said cheerfully, "Alright, Miss Gillenwater! Show us what you can do."

Logically Greta had known that as a second year entering a duelling competition - even one for students - that she would more likely be outmatched and that it was highly unlikely that she'd win, especially since it was her first tournament, however she hadn't expected to be matched with a fifth year right off the bat. She didn't know Miss. Adebayo but as a fifth year who entered tournaments the girl would clearly know more spells than her and probably be adept at casting them.

"Fumos Duo" Greta said waving her wand to perform the smokescreen spell, hoping at least that something that would impair the vision would at least give her some chance.

Genia Adebayo looked her "competition" over then gave a dismissive snort that reached no ears beyond her own. This would surely be a piece of cake. After listening dutifully to the directions, the Slytherin boldly slid her wand into its sheath at her hip, instead raising her hand to cast, "Protego!"

She had spent the past year, in stops and starts, developing her wandless magic ability, after all. While she was nowhere near as good (or consistent) as her brothers—who had been schooled in such a manner from the very start—it was time to see if she could perform under a pressure that simply could not be found in an empty classroom.

Alright, wow.

Tybalt blinked, sure for a moment that his eyes had deceived him. But – no, no, however on earth she'd managed it, Miss Adebayo had dispelled the attempt at smoke without a wand in hand. He felt bad for Miss Gillenwater, but he had to join in on the applause. And to think no one liked to judge the boring student duels!

"Impressive, both of you," Tyb said. "Miss Adebayo takes the first round and may begin the next."

The Slytherin gave a small eyeroll, but distance likely kept it from being too obvious. Genia had been impressive, had cast a viable spell without a damn wand. All the little girl had done was create a bit of smoke—something cooks and arsonists had been doing for centuries to little acclaim. She would show the judge true impressive if it killed him. But not her.

This time, the fifth year did take her wand in hand, not wishing to leave anything to chance—pride before the fall and all that. For the first time in such a competition, she cast in her mother tongue, a Yoruba spell to deprive the Gillenwater girl of all her senses at once.

Unsure at exactly what was coming at her - because it certaintly did not sound like any spell Greta had ever heard of she tried the only spell she knew of that might be a decent counter to anything. Afterall she'd been told it would work on anything. She just hoped she got it right.

"Finite."

She may have used her wand, but whatever she had cast was a spell Tybalt had never seen. Poor Miss Gillenwater, brave as she seemed, didn't stand a chance.

"Miss, er – Miss Adebayo takes the duel," he said distractedly, still trying to end the spell's effects on her victim, who looked distressingly lost all of a sudden. Hopefully it was reversible.
