Elvi's networking thread

Elvi | 30s | GMT+2 | | she/her

HELLO THERE & welcome to my networking thread. I'm super excited to get back into RPGing, so hit me with your best (worst) characters and plot ideas. Also, English is not my main language, so apologies in advance for when I say something weird (: You can reach me via PM or on Discord or, obviously, in this thread.

Preferences

PLOTTING: I love light plotting, like background, setups and concepts, but prefer leaving the exact future & outcomes open. Also simply smashing characters together and seeing what happens is fine! And I'm not saying no to more structured plot ideas either, but even then I'd like to reserve the right to change course if the characters end up demanding it. Mutual pining is my greatest weakness, so if you can give me that I'll be forever in your debt.

LIMITATIONS: Generally I'm up for anything. Just no smut please (fade to black/implying is fine). And if your idea is particularly gruesome, le't discuss it first 8)

POSTING: I don't match words, and don't expect anyone else to do it either. As long as there's something to work I'm not too bothered about post length. I guess my posts tend to be on the longer side, especially early in a thread, but learning how to be more concise is an ongoing struggle.

NED IS... a steadfast, dependable and highly practical career bureucrat whose main hobbies include herbology and being caught in the fallout of other people's scandals. He shudders at the thought of calling himself a progressive, but on the other hand he does have a squib daughter who he loves very much so here we are. He's lost his faith in humanity a long time ago.

NED NEEDS...

- his daughters: The girls are on the canon list, someone please go make them. Especially Idris.

- a love life: He's a lonely single dad who needs a friend. His preferences are murky at best and I don't think he knows what love is, so maybe he could find someone equally awkward for maximum confusion? But, as said, I'm open to trying anything. (Also, he's still legally married so drama? Also, if just having someone try to flirt with him would be fun too.)

- familial connections: He has a sister born in 1842 at the latest, and an estranged wife born between c. 1845-1850. Does your character have relatives who could do double duty? They could be related.

- MORE familial connections: Ned has a disaster brother who could have all sorts of skeletons in his closet. A lover (female or male), a wife, a child, anything. His shenigans have been going on since the late 1850s so it wouldn't even need to be recent. Also, a character just claiming to be a connection would do the trick. (The Oakbys are UC wealthy and there's no male heir, so there's money to be made?) Ned has conflicted feelings about his brother and he needs to process these.

- MORE FAMILY DRAMA: Does your character have a family member or a loved one who died in mysterious circumstances? Let's talk.

- etc.: The Oakbys live in Wellingtonshire but their ancestral lands are located in the West Midlands near the border of Wales, so families from these locations could be connections. He would also be acquainted with other UC purebloods - there was a time when the Oakby name was well respected.

THEA IS... Professor Twycross to you. She teaches Ancient Studies at Hogwarts, and is Ravenclaw's Head of House and a well-respected scholar. She's personable, resourceful, and passionate, and likes to help her students to become the best possible versions of themselves. She also has opinions, though she tends to keep these closer to the chest.

THEA NEEDS...

- her family: Ad here.

- co-workers: Professors and other Hogwarts staff! Thea's been teaching since since 1871 (with the exception of a sabbatical between 1887-1890 that might or might not have been because of the half-breed ban). How does your character feel about her leaving? Or the fact that she was allowed to come back?

- students: Current students: Does your character need guidance, either in their academic or personal life? Thea can help. Past students: Did Thea help you excel in school (or in life in general)? Or did she needlessly meddle in your life? Both are equally possible options. Especially Ravenclaws would be very familiar with her (she's been their HoH since 1883).  Ancient Studies students also have a particular place in her heart - from these she expects a lot.

- other scholars: Her dad was a renowed academic as well, so she's been embedded in the scene since childhood. I imagine that the wizarding academia is limited enough for people to mix over disciplines.

- etc.: She currently stays at Hogwarts during the week, but otherwise the family lives in Bartonburg South (and probably have for quite a while). She's also travelled quite a bit around the Mediterranean, so any acquaintances from those journeys could be cool?

Terence Higgs and Thea should thread, he just recently started teaching art at Hogwarts this school year, but I'm sure they would have ample opportunity to chit chat between classes and lessons.

#5
Walter Staghart Yes, I agree! Thea would've made it her mission to be welcoming to a new coworker. Plus, she's into fine art (not as a painter but as an aficionado) so she'd be happy to get to know him and talk to about culture~.

#6
Sounds like we definitely should have a thread between the two. Did you want to do a past one, when Terence first begins teaching, or a current one and just assume they've talked plenty of times in the last year?

#7
Walter Staghart Either one works for me if you have a preference! If not, past one could be fun? I can start one if you'd like.

#8
If you feel up to starting it, that'll work. I will let you pick whether it's in the Past or a current one. I'm happy with either.

Hi Elvi it's nice to meet you!

For Thea, I'm pleased to inform you Ida also has opinions! <3 The two have a lot more in common than I think Ida would care to admit for someone so young. Smile Just a few ideas below, but they should have a meeting soon! Random thoughts why...

* In an ideal world she'd pursue exactly the path Thea has done, research/academia. She's a Transfig natural and hopes to co-author with @Basil Foxwood one day, and eventually author her own research - already has an IC thesis! Unlike Thea however her father/family is very much not supportive of an academic career, she was barely allowed to stay in Hogwarts. So if Thea can help Ida make the case for her future that would be amazing! Right now she's gotten lessons on how to 'pick her battles' with @"Natsuko Mountbatton" and Dorothea Twycross among her tightknight dormmates: Poppy, Giselle, Pippa. She's still too righteous and not very tactful.

* Key difference with Thea is also she's very opposed to marriage. Her only frame of reference was the way her dad limited her mom, and her mom died from an accident Ida feels would've been preventable if her mom was more magic-literate. The death happened Ida's 2nd > 3rd year, so I think she might've rejected Thea at first (too maternal-feeling after her loss..?). She dropped Ancient Studies after OWLs... Did well in the exam, but she likes more of the mathematics/equations.

Otherwise, for either Oakby or Thea I have...  Thomas Harvey for any or a) private/discrete investigations with Barnabas Beck or  b) partyboy cocktail making bartender ...? needs. Smile OR @"Sophia Voss", she's new and could easily connect with ballet/art lovers.

Ida Chang Hi! <3 And yess, I'm craving for some Thea/student action and I absolutely love Ida. So yes, yes to all!

I agree that Thea and Ida have a lot of stuff in common, but they also have some interesting key differences. (For example Thea is extremely outwards-oriented and Ida is not? And Ida is very blunt and Thea is absolutely not.) So I could see their past relationship having been mired with little misunderstandings. Like, most of the time they'd get along very well — but then other times things just get lost in translation. For example, Thea would've tried to console Ida after her mother's death, but that would've probably come off as overwhelming at that point in time. And Thea would've been understanding of Ida dropping ancient studies, but she wouldn't have ever mentioned this so Ida could've just assumed she was disappointed/annoyed. Also, Thea tends to be more demanding of those she believe have the most potential, so she'd be super demanding of Ida, which might make it seem like she's never satisfied with her. And so forth.

(As a sidenote, Thea is secretly insecure about the fact that she has zero understanding/knowledge of her maternal family and their culture. So this  makes Ida a bit of an awkward reminder to her, even if she doesn't even admit it to herself.)

(As another sidenote, I love it that Dot is giving Ida advice, and its basically 99% the same advice Thea would give in the same situation.)

Sooo in short Thea would love nothing more than to help Ida! And I'm up for threading whenever you want! Thea sent out a note of reminder not long ago for 7th years to come meet her. Or some other scenario, if you have something in mind.

As a totally separate thing I just have to say, Ned would find Sophia absolutely terrifying XD I'd like to see a murder investigation plot in his future so I'll keep Tom in mind.

Loooove everything about Ida and Thea dynamic! Ida is understandably anxious about upcoming graduation. Uncharacteristically she's not scheduling a meeting/etc right away because she's still trying to make up her own mind about things. Just in case Ida dragging her feet on the matter
would nag a note out of Thea or something. Wink Otherwise I can set us up with a thread sometime this week.
