Was something not better than nothing? Percy's sharp black and white perspective was going to force a repetition of their long history apart. A brief affair until the scandal broke wasn't enough for Maggie. She meant it when she said she couldn't live without him anymore. A friendship until something more (if something more were to happen) seemed like the only way to avoid any fall out. He said now that he didn't care about his reputation, but what about when he lost respect and access? What about when his future prospects dimmed because of the scandal?

But, what if by insisting upon distance now she lost him now and was left with nothing?

"We can't live in the shadows, Percy." Maggie said sadly. "I want you — Merlin knows I do — but I ..." don't want to ruin your life, again remained unsaid. Instead, Maggie leaned into his touch, desperate for whatever little left there was for them. "You would give up hope for a marriage? Children of your own? By the time we can be together I'll be well past my prime...I don't want you to sacrifice more for me."

Percy knew the answer in the very beat of his heart. He would give it all up for happiness with Maggie. "Yes." It was a very simple truth that Percy had lived by for so long. It surprised him how readily he knew now. "I would give up the world for you, Maggie." He said gently.

What he couldn't understand was why she felt he would need to. "I'll wait for you." He couldn't quite bring himself to mention her mourning period, the reality of her husband and how quickly she had turned from that previous life in only one evening wasn't something he was willing to examine closely right now. "When the time comes I'll pay court to you. We'll make it official. If there are children they will be a blessing." His gaze was intense as he looked at her, willing her to see the bright picture that would be their future as Percy did.

Even now lying in his arms with the softspoken promises being made, Maggie knew it couldn't possibly last. A comment would be made or a fuss would be had and suddenly Percy would be unable to wait. There were always too many obstacles between them, always a reasoning to prevent their happiness. Maybe that was how it would always be, but for now...for now Maggie would allow them this shred of happiness.

"Okay." She agreed simply with a smile. "Okay. We'll figure it out." Not every bump had to be ironed out tonight. Not every hurt had to be remedied this minute. They could stay just as they were for a little while longer.

Tomorrow was another day.
