Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

July 25th, 1889 — Outside Whitledge Residence

Pumpkin was mildly annoyed with her younger sister's cat. Running off in the middle of the night, making them go out to find the stupid thing. What made it even better was that Sweetie had forgotten something, so they had to go back to the house to pick it up.

The recent graduate was already mildly grumpy about the fact that they'd had to go out in the first place, now they had to go out again. While it was nearly a month since they'd found the body of Miss Rawlinson and her chaperone, it was still far too dangerous to go outside at night.

One never knew when a vampire would attack, she'd grumbled to the Slytherin.

What a boring night. Having made her promise to Ishmael, she'd been supremely bored for the past month or so. Flitting about rooftops had her feeling like a common chimney sweep and she'd about had enough of it. Hearing the gossip of this town was both annoying and mildly pleasant. The annoying bit of it was hearing how much people cared about the affairs of each other as opposed to simply leaving well enough alone and going about their worthless existences. The part that was mildly pleasant was hearing the whispers behind closed doors about menaces otherwise caused by existences unknown to them. Her existence, mainly. And Ishmael said this town was interesting. They were just as all the others had been, riddled by gossip and fear. History repeated itself again and again, and none learned anything to promote the survival of their species.

Debutantes were the worst of it. Busying themselves with powder and rouge whilst wondering who liked whom or whose fiancé was sleeping with whom. A particular nasty pair were bad-mouthing one of Azazel's kind. She didn't tend to care about such trivial matters, but the words coming out of their mouths could make even the dead turn in their graves. Or on the rooftops that they were presently lounging upon. Something about one of their friend's mothers who was a vampire - honestly, why anyone would consider lying with one of them was beyond Zel. In the past half-century, however, she'd learned that creatures will do what they want – she had no control of their motivations.

She did have control of their consequences, however, and so ended up where she was at present; perched on a spindly rooftop peering down at one of the ungrateful brats, a small stone in her hand. With a well-aimed flick, she aimed to knock the wand (and perhaps damage it in the process) out of the woman's hand.

Pumpkin probably should have been more aware of her surroundings — although who would be looking on roofs? — if she really were worried about vampire attacks. That said, she was surprised when a rock was thrown at her, knocking her wand out of her hand (which, really, she probably should've had a better grip on it).

The former Ravenclaw tried seeing where her wand had landed, but couldn't see it in the darkness. After a few seconds, she glanced in the general direction of where the rock had come from.

There was no way that it'd just been an accidental throw, so who was assaulting her and why?

She always did like an entrance. This time, however, she elected to keep to the rooftop for as long as she could. Her nose crinkled at the girl and she smirked. The absolutely stunned expression on her face just tickled the vampire. "Not very bright, you are." she called out, suppressing a giggle.

Pumpkin didn't like the taunt that was coming her way. From someone she couldn't see, no less. It was annoying. "I didn't know stalkers were such cowards."

Probably not the smartest thing to say to someone who could throw a rock from some distance, but the words were out of her mouth before she could stop them.

Azazel's nose crinkled once more, although this time her lips curled up into a snarl. A low guttural sound came from her as she leaned forward, her hair limp at the sides of her cheeks as it dangled. "Call me a coward, you insolent twit?" she growled, teeth gnashing together. Was this girl begging to end up like that other brat? She leaned forward further, enjoying looking DOWN on this being. She tipped forward, leaving the comfort of her perch and going into a swan dive. Before she landed, she somersaulted and landed on her feet, crouching before striking out with her bare leg to make the girl lose her balance and drop to the floor. "I never liked your kind," she continued; quieter this time. "You walk around as if the world owed you every drop of blood."

Pumpkin was pretty sure she was going to die. If not because she was drained of blood, but because she was turned into a vampire. That was something she really did not want. She might as well finish what she started, even if she was now on the ground and glaring up at the vampire. "At least we own our blood more than your kind. We don't have to steal and murder to live."

"Not all of us steal and murder, love." she said huskily, eyes narrowing as she observed the witch. She briefly glanced up, looking to see if anyone was about to walk in, before glancing back down. "Some of us are....rather, insufferable and striving towards the greater good." This last part she almost choked out, not caring to hide her eyes rolling into the back of her head.

"Plus," she reached out a hand to gently stroke her finger along the side of the debuante's jaw. "Some of you deserve it."

If this were to be how Pumpkin died, she wasn't going to let any fear show. "Nobody should die by losing all their blood." she forced her voice to stay steady, though she couldn't control her pounding heart. Wasn't her words ironic? Nobody should lose their blood by a vampire, but that was exactly how she was going to die.

Despite herself, she could feel tears forming.

The vampire smirked. "Why should you care?" she inquired, "you're not going to feel it, love." She sighed, almost as if she was reminiscing. "Well, at least you won't if I decide you don't." She looked back down at the girl and tilted her head, almost as if she were about to ask a question.

As tears formed in the girl's eyes, Azazel reached out again, watching the droplets of water run down her cheeks. "There, there," she crooned, leaning forwards and perching her chin on her knees.

Pumpkin didn't answer the vampire, she didn't close her eyes. She knew that the vampire could take as much - or as little - time as she wanted in kiling her, but she also knew that while they weren't exactly in a public place, or there weren't a lot of people around. But there had to be someone around to make her death less dragged out.

She felt disgusted at the vampire's response to her crying. Now that she'd started, she couldn't stop, but she would if she had the time. She refused to comment anymore on how she felt about the topic at hand. She'd dug her grave, and she was laying in it now.

CW: Mild violence
Not often they didn't say anything. More often than not they wanted to die a hero, so corageous and strong. Azazel sighed contentedly before moving her hand down to the girl's neck. "Couldn't have said it better myself," she chirped cheerfully, before tightening her grip. She didn't say anything about making the girl's death slow - she just said the girl wouldn't be awake when she drained her of blood.

Meh.

The vampire suddenly found herself bored, and so decided to keep to her "promise" and make the girl's death quick. She was hungry. Besides...blood always tasted so good, but there was something about fresh blood of the brats that traipsed throughout the streets that Zel relished in drinking.

It had taken Sweetie some time to find what she was looking for. One of the maids had actually had the nerve to stop her and ask far too many questions for the Slytherin's liking. How the woman had stopped talking was a miracle on its own.

So when she had finally headed back out, she hadn't in the least been expecting to see what she saw. A feminine figure standing over... was that Pumpkin?! The girl cried out before grabbing her wand. "Stupefy!" Aimed straight at the figure before her.

Starved as she was, Azazel didn't hear the girl enter - she did hear the girl cry out, however, and she jerked her head up, teeth in a bared grimace. Before she could do anything, she was thrown off her feet and everything went black.

The Slytherin paused for a moment. What should she do? Look at the attacker? It didn't look like her sister was breathing. Oh damn, her sister wasn't breathing! But, what, what should she do? The attacker's face wasn't clear.

Sweetie looked around in a panic, hoping some answer would pop up. She looked to door she had just exited from. And then she knew. Help, she needed help. So she ran back in. "Help! Someone has attacked Pumpkin!" Damn, was anyone other than the staff awake?!

The metallic taste in her mouth was the first thing she sensed. The next was the smell of drying blood. Azazel stirred, feeling the dirt beneath her skin and the cold breeze. As the vampire came to, she realized the figure just ahead of her was the one she'd just taken blood from. "Shit." she swore, scrambling up and looking around. Someone had seen her and had gone. Most likely to get help. "Fuck."

This was not good.

Someone had seen her. If she got away, there would be at least a wave of vampires upon her cave demanding questions. So far she'd managed to stay under the radar, but this....Ishmael would kill her before anyone else could.
