Appearance: Mars is 6'1" with often-scraggly brown hair, brown eyes, and a lanky frame. His dominant hand is his right and he has a really friendly smile even though he doesn't display it super often. He wears basically whatever he can get his hands on and ends up with a pretty raggedy, layered look to his outfits.

History: Mars was born with only one thing going for him: a twin. Jupiter. They were born to a schizophrenic mother, their father immediately ditched out, and within a few years, their mother had basically wandered off. The twins were left to the mercy of the other slum families living nearby.

Mars was the "normal" one. Jupiter was the one who suffered from their mother's pregnancy drug use. He struggled with everything and grew only more and more timid as other kids mistreated him. Mars, on the other hand, grew more and more vicious in protecting his brother.

They were seven the first time they were separated, and that simply wouldn't do. The boys ran away from their new “homes” (places of employment, really) and began their lives as street children. It was better to be together than to have a roof over their heads.

Over the years of stress and violence, at some point, Jupiter just stopped talking. He signed instead, and bit by bit Mars learned his language. He didn't understand, of course — he really never had — but what was he to do? They were brothers.

Being brought to Hogwarts was incredibly shocking for them both. Fortunately, they were placed in Slytherin together, but being together didn’t make learning their way in a whole new world much easier. It was clear, given their complete lack of knowledge regarding the magical world, that they were muggleborns or at least "no better than." So the kids who cared about that sort of thing liked to be dicks. Jupiter, always an excellent target, received more bullying. Mars just got more and more brutal in his defense.

After their first year of school, they had nowhere to go and no money to get them back to Hogwarts. So, they were back on the streets trying to eke out a living, and Jupiter became seemingly more and more unhinged as time went by. Thus Mars had no option other than to do every job he could get his hands on: At various points he was a dustbin boy, a chimney sweep and a newsboy.

He lucked out when the owner of the opium den caught him brewing a strange potion he’d invented out of whatever was at hand. Clearly the boy was magical and had considerable natural potioneering talent. That was the day the twins’ lives changed massively for the better.

Before he knew it, Mars had a prime job at the opium den as a pipe boy, and he was allowed to live with the owner who took him on as an apprentice potioneer. They focused on creating magical drugs (addictive whenever possible) to help the slum-dwellers take a little bit of the edge off life. Best of all, the man was kind enough to let Jupiter stay, too, even though the boy was essentially useless.

They were eighteen years old when the Bad Year rolled around. Muggles discovered the existence of the wizarding world, and suddenly the city was even more dangerous than it had been already. Jupiter was one of the unfortunates, and Mars had to retrieve his bloated body from the riverbank himself, long after the muggle mob had dissipated.

Aside from his horrible grief, life went on in pretty much the same way. When Mars was twenty-two, the owner of the opium den died and his son took over. Thus Mars had to find his own accommodations and he began bouncing around between boarding house and doss house and back again depending on his finances. It was a rough life, but he’d earned a pretty solid reputation as a maker of illicit magical substances, and members of the middle class began commissioning his work. As long as they could pay for both the supplies and the labor, he would work for them.

He was twenty-eight when something very strange started happening: Jupiter began to visit him. Sometimes it was just his voice. Other times Mars would feel a cool touch on his arm or his face. On very rare occasions, he would actually catch a glimpse of his brother. And, as it turned out, Spirit Guide Jupiter could do some pretty cool things in terms of helping Mars stay away from trouble. Working through gut feelings and little whispers in his ear, Spirit Guide Jupiter is sometimes able to warn Mars away from particularly dangerous situations, which has certainly been useful.

Personality: Hot-tempered. Clever. Extremely loyal and protective.
