Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

Maggie threw her wand down on the floor and looked cross at the world. "This is stupid, I can't do this even if I try." she looked towards the other students that were moving on giggling and smiling away at each other like the happy little witches they were.

After a few seconds having drawn unwanted attention to herself, the muggle girl picked up her wand. She looked at the cursed stick and waved it again really trying this time. "Glacius!"

Gus liked when they looked like they were having fun. He shuffled off to watch over the students still struggling with the first challenge, pausing to smile at Miss Wallace. "Don't give up. You'll get it. It just takes practice." He encouraged her. He wasn't sure if it was what she needed, but the Hufflepuff was able to freeze the water to move toward the second challenge.

He turned, grin edging wider as he watched Miss Spaans and Miss Shacklebolt both freeze their blocks. The others seemed to struggle with it. "Excellent work ladies. Five points to each of you."

Forsythia wanted to sink into the floor when Pippa kicked up a bit of a fuss about their classes lesson. It made her cringe inwardly every time someone said "Miss Rowle" since she was also Miss Rowle. Unlike her cousin, however, she stepped forward to make her own attempt at the first challenge.

Nathaniel was excited for the challenges ahead. Miss Rowle could poo poo it all she liked, it didn't change the fact it was cool. He eagerly waited for his own turn and when it came, he made his attempt. Time would tell if he would succeed or prove too overzealous.

Finally, challenges worth his time! Pip was more than a little impatient for his own turn to come along. When it finally did, he did his best as he cast the spell. He waited to see if he would successfully move onto the next challenge.

Caroline, having decided that Dark wizards were rather like the bogey man - a story told to children to make them behave and any energy spent thinking of them was pretty much pointless, enjoyed the more practically fun or informative parts of the class and thought that Miss Rowle's attempt to avoid fun was rather silly. She probably just didn't want want to do it because she was afraid she would look silly. Miss Rowle seemed the type to avoid anything that would make her look anything less than a perfect picture of a lady. It sounded absolutely dull and boring.

She waited for her own turn, watching the students ahead of herself and squirming as she imagined what she'd be doing when it came to her own turn... when it came to her own turn she did her best.

Gus let the ones in the later challenges attempt their spells as he turned his attention back toward those stuck on the first. Miss Rowle was able to freeze most of the water and not just a small path, which made him laugh. "Excellent work Miss Rowle!" He waved at the Hufflepuff one, in case anyone was confused as to which one he was speaking to. Mr. Manwaring was able to create a small enough path to head toward the second challenge, while Mr. Gallivan was only able to create a small ripple, unable to freeze anything. Miss Weasley almost had it, but the ice melted before she would be able to step on it. "Try with a little confidence." He quietly encouraged the two. They were almost there.

The professor then stepped back to watch them at work. It didn't matter if they completed it or not, Gus was pleased with the progress they were all making toward mastering the spell. (Outside of Miss Rowle, although he still hoped that she might come around, even if not during this lesson.)

One challenge down and two to go. She was pleased that she had completed the first part eventually but kind of just wanted it to be over. Next was some moving obstacles that needed to be frozen in order for her to pass.

She swished her wand and tried her best, her best being fairly mediocre, but she was actually trying to play the part of a witch for once.

Now she just had one challenge left to go! Kaatjie flashed a smile at Miss Georgianna Shacklebolt and turned to the dummy - after the first two challenges, how hard could it be to get it to slow down?

"From any danger of course!"' Toby declared, puffing his chest out. But of course it wasn't that easy of a challenge afterall. Oh well. Toby kept trying to continue on to the goal, even if not gracefully, he did at least attempt it.

Oh! For some reason she had been expecting to fail. But not only did she succeed, the professor praised her. She contemplated the blocks that were bouncing back and forth before making her attempt to freeze them. Would she prove as adept as she had at the first challenge or would she have to try again? She held her breath as she waited to see what the outcome was going to be.

Caspian waited for his turn to come up and when he did, he faced the first challenge. He performed the Ice Jinx and hoped for the best. Other students were advancing to further challenges and he didn't want to be left behind.

Pip was pleased when his spell proved to be a success and he was able to move onto the second challenge. The bouncing blocks were making him a little dizzy. Still. Just having to freeze the blocks long enough to run past them seemed doable. After all, the first one had been a breeze for him. And so he made his attempt.

Annoyed at her spell having melted Caroline practically growled. Failing had not been what she'd set out to do - but the Professor had said to try again with confidence! Well, Caroline thought, she would give him confidence. Confidence with a Capital C.

Taking a deep breath Caroline focused as HARD as she could and waved her wand practically shouting the spell. She knew what she wanted it to do and this time - well, this time - she wouldn't fail.

Fun? None of this was fun, and Pippa remained resolute. At first.

As all of the other first years joined in, however, her Principled Stance™ (her principle was not making a fool of herself) caused her to appear more and more of a sore thumb, and that was, in itself, making a fool of herself. The Gryffindor sighed, clutched her wand, and made a half-hearted attempt.

This class was going better than he expected it to go, and Gus felt a swell of pride in his chest as he watched his introductory students work through the course.

Mr. Seacoal was able to create a small path to the other side, although it was melting right behind each step he took. Mr. Pettigrew had a lot better luck, as the path remained frozen well after he stepped off it. Gus couldn’t help but grin as Miss Rowle, the Gryffindor one, stepped up to the plate. (He felt like he might have finally won her over, which was a gold star in his book.) She was able to create a thin path of frozen ice, and with a bit of luck made it to the other side before a huge chunk fell off into the water.

“Good job everyone, keep going!” Gus clapped as he turned toward those working on the second challenge.

Miss Wallace seemed to be concentrating a bit more, as she was able to freeze the blocks enough to squeak through to the other side, now facing the third challenge. Mr. Manwaring was right behind her, as was Miss Weasley. She barely made it off the ice before it completely melted. Miss Rowle, the Hufflepuff, was unable to freeze the blocks in time, and they slid back to block her path. One of them might have even hit her, too. Gus hovered for a moment to ensure she wasn’t hurt (or too hurt to continue.)

Miss Spaans was the most impressive of the bunch to Gus today, as she hit the dummy on the first try to finish the course, beating out those she was racing – Gus was quick to award her house points for her effort. “Excellent work, Miss Spaans. Feel free to help give out pointers to those you feel might need it.”

Wallace 7 (3rd) | Spaans 14 (finished) | Seacoal 6 (2nd) | F. Rowle 5 (2nd) | Pettigrew 15 (2nd) | Manwaring 7 (2nd) | Weasley 6 (2nd) | P. Rowle 8 (2nd)
