Thaddeus bowed very formally to the lady opposite him. He knew Mrs Rowle's family - both natal and marital. He moved to the first position, and cast, aiming to prevent the lady from moving to cast a counter spell. He certainly didn't want to hurt her.

Before Mrs. Rowle could distress Charles with some vulgarly aggressive spell casting, Mr. Flint's spell seemed to render her immobilized for which he was very grateful.

As Charles expected (and hoped) Mrs. Rowle's spell was unsuccessful - or rather it was successful but it was redirected back at her which obviously wasn't the desired outcome. Mr. Flint is the winner!
