Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

December 19th, 1891 - Scamander Home
Desiderius Morgan

December, though not technically the season always seemed to be full of events he couldn't find a good excuse not to attend. Last evening it had been the Minister's holiday shindig, today it was the Charity Quidditch match and auction, and he swore there were at least two more before the year's end he was roped into attending.

Today's hadn't been so hard, except he was exhausted from last night, but he had promised Theseus he would bring him to the match, but had sent him home with Nanny for a nap afterward. The auction was worth his time after all and he should make sure he made a donation after all. He needed a nap himself however, so likely wouldn't have made it much longer anyway. He had however, run into Morgan while there and had invited him back to the house for a drink after making his contributions to the auction. The pair hadn't seen one another much lately and frankly, Eugene needed a drink where he could rant without worrying about being overheard.

"I don't know how debutantes do this constant socializing, I'm exhausted." Eugene admitted as he loosened his tie and brought his whiskey to his lips. Then again, he supposed they didn't work either, the social limelight was their occupation. Either way, he much preferred his day job. Chasing creatures was much easier than chasing skirts. Fortunately he didn't have to worry about the latter anymore as he was counting down the days until he and Tilda could make things a little more official.

Desi had been having a grand time at the Quidditch Charity thing. He had spent the evening before at the Ministry party as was required of him before heading off to yet another party after that. And today he had attended the Charity Quidditch Match where he had run into Scamander. His social calendar was quite full this weekend and he still had another obligation to go to later that night. That one was likely to go into the wee hours. He enjoyed it all though and if he had trouble waking tomorrow morning, he would just take a half-day.

"It is great fun though. For me anyway," Desi said with a chuckle. Not that he could tell Scamander even half of what he got up to. "You just have to catch a few winks of sleep whenever you can. Whether it be during the carriage ride to someone estate or during a quiet moment at home."

"Hard to do with a toddler running around." Though his nanny did a phenomenal job, he still felt guilty that Theseus spent more time with her than his own father and so when he was home and the lad wasn't sleeping (like he was now), Eugene felt compelled to play with his son. He didn't mind, but it certainly didn't make catching a nap himself any easier. He supposed he'd doomed himself in that respect, he could be snoozing right now instead of chatting with Morgan, but Eugene wasn't even sure he could sleep right now if pressed.

"It used to be fun," Eugene chuckled. "Maybe I'm starting to feel old." He shrugged as if he didn't know the answer was that fatherhood had definitely changed the name of the game. "I'll need to take a day off from work if this keeps up too much longer." Eugene was very ready to settle down and skip the social scene. He knew that even if he and Tilda were able to get married without a hitch, that there would still be social events to attend, but it would be much easier to say no with a wife and son at home instead of him trying to pretend that he was still on the marriage market.

"That's why people hire nannies," Desi said, not really getting why Scamander wouldn't utilize his more. Desi had been raised rather traditionally so it didn't occur to him that a parent might want to spend time playing with his child.

"I'm older than you but then again, I also don't have a child." And thank Merlin for that. Desi was perfectly content to be the fun uncle or family friend than responsible for one of those tiny terrors. "Any word on your wife?" It seemed quite unfair that his sweetheart of a friend was saddled with all of the responsibility when he had hardly been the only one to bring the child into existence.

"Oh she's around plenty." Eugene felt as if Nan was the one actually raising Theseus. She lived in the servants quarters, had Theseus all day while Eugene worked. She deserved her time off when Eugene could make it happen. "I feel guilty, with his mother gone, he's only got one parent. I should spend time with him." It wasn't his son's fault that he existed, thanks to a one-night tryst, and that his mother had just up and run away without a word.

"No," Thankfully. The whole thing was a mess, but the disconnect from Astrild had been evident when she still lived with him. Now that she had been gone for years, he hardly even remembered her. He needed her to stay gone too. If she came back before he could file for the divorce, he had no idea what he would do. Everything he needed to finally move forward hinged on the fact that she stayed away. "It's better this way. I've been seeing someone." It had to be casual, and basically hidden, another thing for which he felt unreasonably guilty about, but fortunately Tilda seemed to think it was worth it too. Eugene had to have faith things would work out in the end. "I'll be able to petition for the divorce this spring and that chapter will close." Merlin he just hoped it went smoothly.

"You have nothing to feel guilty for. That woman does," Desi insisted. His friend and his son really did not deserve any of this. Desi had always thought so and he was not private about holding that opinion.

"Wonderful!" Desi said, not being one of those men that would care about what kind of woman would want to court a man who was already wed. He just assumed Eugene had explained it all to the woman and she had been understanding. It was really not any of his business. All he cared about was his buddy seemed happy about it.

"And then you will be able to court this new woman?" And hopefully this one would stick around.

On a sensible level, Eugene knew that was true, but it was still hard not to feel guilty when Theseus was missing out on having a functioning mother in his life. That was truly unfair. Fortunately after explaining all of this to Tilda, she had still decided to stick it out.

"Not exactly sure, I've started doing some research, but really I need to find the right solicitor or lawyer first." Once he found the right person to handle the whole thing he was pretty sure that he would be able to get it all sorted. "We'll give it some time. I have no idea if it's like mourning or what, but by the this time next year hopefully. She was very understanding." Tilda was willing to wait, but Eugene hoped not to keep her waiting for too long. He didn't want to wait anymore either.

"So if you know any lawyers, I could use someone reliable." While he wanted it to happen, Eugene was still sort of dreading it. Nothing about this had been easy and he highly suspected that the legal aspect would be equally as difficult.

Desi took a sip of his drink as he listened to hsi friend speak. He hoped to never personally have these troubles but he supposed Scamander had been doing the same. It wasn't like anyone knew going into things that someone would end up running off to a commune or whatever it was the other mans wife was doing.

"I am not sure if they deal with domestic disputes but I have heard good things about Swann & Associates," he supplied. "The big man there is Everett Swann."

Eugene filed the name away to send an owl to. He was pretty sure somebody at work would be able to give him a name or two. He could probably stroll right into the Law Enforcement office and ask one of the clerks or lawyers there for a recommendation. There was no way he wanted anybody from work handling this, but he supposed word would get out eventually. Fortunately Helga was married so her prospects weren't in danger and if Eugene had to venture a guess, Lena could give a flying fuck if it impacted her reputation.

"Good to know, I'll reach out, thanks." He took a pensive sip of his drink, before realizing it was empty. Probably for the best at this rate. "Hopefully it'll al work out without any drama."

"Of course. What are friends for?" Desi said when Scamander thanked him. "There is liable to be some but it will be worth it in the end. And it will fade away when the next scandal rocks the ton."
