Valerian committed the taste of Greengrass' skin to memory and enjoyed the sensations of Greengrass' fingers running through his hair. In time he knew he'd be able to find something like this again—but like was the key word, because he doubted he'd find someone so hesitant yet intoxicatingly bold at times, someone who was so inexperienced yet eager and who responded to his touch so hungrily. He wouldn't have a Greengrass again; he would have to find someone else, and right now the idea of anyone else paled in comparison to the man he was holding tight to. Valerian didn't like change.
He pulled back so he could look at Greengrass' face, loosening his arms around Greengrass' waist but making no move to let him go. "That's what this is supposed to be, though," he answered, his bottom lip jutting out in an unintended pout, "An escape from the world—you know, where we're not allowed to do this." He glanced down between their bodies to demonstrate their point. In the real world he was supposed to be Valerian Macnair, eldest son of Eustace and Mariana Macnair, hospital healer, eligible bachelor who broke ladies' hearts everywhere by choosing to marry his cousin. He could play that role outside of these walls, but when he was with Greengrass he could show a side of himself that he wasn't able—wasn't allowed—to show anyone else. How could he not mourn the end of this?
"And I know you've got a lot on your plate." Greengrass' father had passed, and now he was responsible for his sisters. He'd mentioned that when they first met, but Valerian hadn't thought much about it. "But I can make things easier if you let me," he explained, leaning forward to kiss Greengrass' lips again.
