Juliana frowned slightly, but shrugged. "If you insist. I'm sure you did a lovely job of the shop," she added, to ensure he didn't think her reticence to the idea was due to a lack of faith in his ability to decorate or his taste in ornaments. "But it was going to be a surprise. You're hardly ever out the door this early," she pointed out as she glanced at the nearest clock. Zach could be something of a workaholic when it came to the shop. She understood entirely, since she was much the same when it came to her research — there were whole afternoons where she was so engrossed in what she was doing she hardly remembered to eat. No one could accuse her of staying a minute past time at her day job, but that was only because she'd purposefully chosen something she had no interest in whatsoever. Anything else might have distracted her from her real work.
Distractions, she realized as her eyes crossed Miss Smith again. No wonder he was home earlier than she'd expected, now that there was something at home to compete with the joy his shop brought him.
"Well, I suppose I might've guessed you'd be in a hurry to get home," she admitted as she turned her attention back to her bag of decorations. "But when I planned all this I had no idea I'd find Miss Smith in your flat."
