Kieran stood there on the ladder; he did not move to keep heading upwards, but merely hung out there, looking at Jude. "Werewolf academic," he explained, "Or - academic on werewolves. He isn't a werewolf. And we haven't really met." It wasn't entirely safe, to be talking to M - but it was not as if M knew who Kieran was, either, and as such they both could be absolutely anyone.

“Oh,” Jude said, his mind racing.

Be careful was what he truly wanted to say to this, but there was no use in it, no sense in patronising him. Kieran knew the dangers well enough. Had lived with the secrecy long enough. ‘Haven’t really met’ did not sound quite as clear-cut as ‘haven’t met’ would have, but it seemed too late to point that out, too.

“Has he told you anything else that - might help you?”

He didn’t know how they had begun speaking, but. Someone could be fishing for the wrong reasons. Someone could be trying to sniff werewolves out by asking questions, and Jude wanted to be sure this was not a trap. On the other hand, this new academic could make all the difference in the best way. If they found out something that changed the reality of being a werewolf, or swayed public opinion towards werewolf protections, some real support... Jude had half a mind to talk to this M himself.

"Not really," Kieran admitted, "Asked a lot of questions about - getting bitten, not telling the Ministry." The scar on his shoulder itched. "He's sort of a bleeding heart." Kieran gestured in Jude's direction with one hand, using the other to hold onto the attic ladder itself. M really had some Jude-like qualities; convinced in the general goodness of people if they had the tools required to be good, thought that werewolves were not inherently villainous, annoying, etc.

"He thinks that if the public knows more about werewolves they won't be as afraid. Or whatever," Kieran elaborated. "But I'm using the Augurey as my return address, I'm not stupid."

Jude managed a half smile at the gesture, the mention of a bleeding heart. Hopefully that judgement was true, if Kieran was telling a stranger anything, even anonymously. He could not criticise, either, not really - he agreed entirely with the notion that a better-informed public on the reality of werewolves was a good thing, and he supposed he was pleased Kieran seemed willing to help.

As long as he didn’t get hurt.

“I know,” he protested quickly, glad if they could avoid another argument in the space of an hour, and aware that time was ticking on until moonlight. “I’d like to hear more about it,” he added, sincerely, “but maybe in the morning? You should -” Jude jerked his head towards the attic door, trying not to wonder too closely whether the rabbit would still be around by then.

"Yeah," Kieran said, frowning up at the attic. They really were cutting things closer than he would have liked. He took the last few steps up into the attic. "See you tomorrow, then." Kieran drew the attic closed.

He unlatched Sandwich's cage before he went to chain himself up.

"I really hope I don't eat you tonight," Kieran said, and he watched the rabbit hop about until the transformation came upon him.
