Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

"Of course I want this." In the split seconds it took to voice her reassurance, Angelica relived every horrible word of his multiple rejections. She couldn't have him thinking she wavered, that wasn't the case, but some idiotic side-effect of her love for him forced her to continue.

The low level in her teacup was the only thing that kept the scalding thing from sloshing as her hands now betrayed her nerves. Cup abandoned to saucer, her hands quickly retreated to her lap. "I want everything. I want you, marriage, and someday our family, but you," keeping her voice neutral was a lost cause, but at least she'd mastered her resentment intermittently in the past month. "You did not choose me." Well, she nearly mastered her resentment.

"What I mean is I could have left for Italy and you could be free of me." Voicing this was suicidal. While a gentleman should honor his engagement, a scandal was nothing new to the Selwyn name. It was better to state the obvious now than have him wake the morning of their wedding and have a revelation that left her at the altar.
