Trust her. She knew him well enough, Emrys thought, to understand what a difficult request that was. He'd built his life on closely guarded secrets. He'd carefully cultivated a persona of mystery, so that even his friends were never entirely sure of his motivation. By this point, an inclination not to trust others was a pillar of his personality. She might as well have asked for half his estate; it would have been easier for him to deliver on it.
"I'm not trying to patronize," he replied, almost wearily. The irritation in his tone had disappeared, but he was still unsure how he was going to weather this conversation. He couldn't even imagine a positive resolution to this predicament, much less see a path to reach one. "It means nothing," he tried to argue, though without much hope of convincing her. If he really wanted her to believe he had no particular attachment to Miss Cosgrove, he would have to explain his reasons behind wanting to marry in the first place, which was out of the question.
