"Well, that's certainly melodramatic," he responded dryly. This was hardly the way to get through the argument unscathed, as was his original intention, but her reaction had irritated him. It was probably the derision directed at Miss Cosgrove that did it. It wasn't that he was enamored with her, by any means, but he had put a good deal of time and effort into selecting the right bride from the marriage market that season. Calling Miss Cosgrove anything less than an ideal choice was calling his judgement into question, which in turn wounded his pride. If there was one thing that would cause him to lose his cool during an argument, it was wounded pride.
"I haven't been hiding anything from you," he said testily. "What were you expecting, a dossier on everyone I've danced with this season? I didn't think a discussion of my courtship would be particularly arousing foreplay."
