“Ah,” Aubrey said, with a nod of understanding. He half-wished he and his siblings were still close, but, well... it was hard to manage when they had spent fifteen years apart, without any sense of what the others had been going through. And Aubrey – well, he was older than most of them, and yet he felt half a life behind them.
“I took the first position I could find, too,” he said, with an understanding quirk of his mouth. “I... I’m thinking of leaving,” he admitted, almost rueful – his first priority had been finding his feet in the world again, and service had been a home as much as a paid position, “but service is about all I know.” (Well, besides Hogwarts.) He didn’t know why he was telling her, but he glanced at her anyway, as if the maid might hold the answers, or some more worldly advice from the other side.
