She had not been a Ravenclaw for nothing – she would have been interested enough in his experiences of India from mere curiosity, even without that casual offer of perhaps taking her there. It could well be a throwaway comment, one he did not intend; it could equally be taken as some indication of his seriousness, as if he were a man ready to find himself a suitable wife.
Mattie did not think she was ready to settle for being a wife – but that did not mean she could not take advantage of a compelling invitation. Indeed, she would have probably put up with Mr. Knight even if he were only half as charming as this, if he was freely offering to show her the sights of Indian cities. As to whether her father would ever let her go on a sightseeing tour – a pity she had not been a young gentleman instead, free to travel the world without supervision – Mattie was in doubt. But she was sure (she was always sure) she could find one way or another to make it happen, to indulge Mr. Knight’s invitation.
“I am sure enough I would have enough stomach,” she agreed playfully, “for the portkey – and your company.”
