Jude seemed — less than thrilled, about something. There was a flat effect at the edges of his smile, and his last sentence pointed to a hurt that Kieran hadn't foreseen. "It was a secret," he said, which was true — a secret, and Kieran had known well that sometimes when things weren't perfect Jude wouldn't get on board.
