She let him see the words land, didn’t bother to veil the hurt that came with them. She loves him and all that came of it was pain. He had never explained himself to her, had never made sense of his change of heart. She’d gone to his bed, spent a summer with his promises and then he’d chosen some mediocre girl to marry.
