If he hadn’t been conscious of his own anxiety in this situation, a strange thrumming fretfulness in his limbs and a restlessness sitting at this little table pretending to drink his tea – it was a lost cause: drinking more of it had made his mouth no less dry – he might not have noticed it mirrored in her. But Miss Sprout was fretting about something.
He was almost more sure of it when she latched onto a change of subject – or, more accurately, the creature that had darted into the room. Towards him: Elias was distracted enough from the situation for a moment. But he couldn’t help himself – most of his mind was still bound up on Irene.
But he didn’t know Miss Sprout well enough to press her on the things she knew about Irene, or didn’t. All he did was watch the fox’s movements with a gentle sigh. When he glanced back at her, he recalled her interrupted question about more chai, and shook his head. “No, thank you,” Elias said, and even feigning a smile pained him slightly. “I’d best get out of your hair.”
