Sort of trope, but specific to Ireland- sort of plot
Until 1939 it was technically a law in Ireland that if 2 people spent a year and a day in each others company they were considered married.
It became a prank to play on your friends for a while - to ‘marry’ them to someone because neither party needed to be present or sign the marriage cert. Priests gave speeches pleading young men to stop pranking each other that way
The Catholic Church annulled the marriages quickly because they were not done before god but only if both sides agree..
Neither party needed to be Irish, just needed to be in Ireland on the day the time ticked by over.
Either Someone purposefully orchestrates to be in Ireland on +1 day to force the marriage
Or they marry someone else to stop someone claiming the year and a day rule
